What would you put in a hamper for a keen gardener

I’m thinking of doing a hamper for my mum. She is a very keen gardener and has just bought herself a greenhouse.
I’m thinking of buying a wheelbarrow shaped planter and filling it with a bunch of seeds and bulbs etc
She has been gardening for years, so has a lot of basics. I don’t think she’d appreciate things like flowery trowels/ forks or a fancy apron. I’m thinking more practical things.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Hand cream

I appreciate giving tokens//cash might not be right when it’s your mum, but what I would really like in a planter is a selection of seed catalogues and a budget to shop from them. I love going through the catalogues and picking out what I want to grow next year. My favourite catalogues are Sarah raven, chiltern seeds and kings seeds.

Other good hamper fillers would be nice garden twine, plant labels, gloves and a kneeler.

Sounds like a lovely present anyway.

I’m doing something similar for my mother in law. My local Wyvale Garden Centre had RHS branded garden items reduced by 50%. They are very nicely packaged

Bulbs? At trip to a garden nearby? A book about het favourite part of gardening flowers or veg or shrubs? Tickets to Chelsea (££££)

A pair of gold leaf leather gardening gloves with the black long cuff. About 26 quid on amazon but worth every penny . I bought my mum a pair for her birthday this year .

InfiniteSheldon · 22/08/2018 18:05

Doesn't matter how long you've been gardening or how experienced you are nice gloves are always an amazing present ditto nice twine and handcream the same for seed and bulb catalogues with a little budget

InfiniteSheldon · 22/08/2018 18:05

And a trug not a hamper Grin

A Hori Hori knife
A heated pad for under seed trays and an outdoors extension cable if the greenhouse isn't right by the house.
Some vermiculite
A voucher for seeds
A really neat metal watering can with a fine hose.

Posh plant labels
Posh gloves
Agapanthus feed (it's done ours the world of good this year!)
Felco secateurs
Really good kneeling pad
New trug

Rockyrockcake · 22/08/2018 18:08

Gardeners hand scrub
Gardeners Hand Cream
Personalised plant labels (Not on the High Street)
Trug
Collection of small bulbs and a pot
Gold Leaf Gardening Gloves
garden snipers or secateurs

Definitely second anything Sarah Raven related. Especially vouchers. My sister has a small plant business and gets super excited if she can spend at Sarah Raven.
How about a manicure set? Gardeners nails often need attention!

BigBlueBubble · 22/08/2018 18:15

Depends when you are planning to give the gift. Bulbs need to be planted by about November at the absolute latest.

DrWhy · 22/08/2018 18:16

Yes to a trug not a hamper. Yes to new gloves, then useful bits that get used up like plant labels, zip ties, garden wire, a propelling pencil (doesn’t keep needing to be sharpened). After that I think you’d have to do some sneaky digging (excuse the pun) to find out what she’d like. I wouldn’t want seeds or bulbs particularly personally, I got a collection of veg seeds last Christmas- in a seed storage filing tin (which is fab!) but the seeds themselves aren’t the ones I’d have chosen either for the vegetables themselves or the varieties, bulbs might be similar plus it will be a bit late to put them in the ground at that time of year. Vouchers and a catalogue is a good call.

Wow! Thanks so much everyone. You’ve got some amazing ideas here. It’s going to cost me a fortune! 😂
Off to google Sarah Raven- never heard of her!!!!

Another two really good voucher selections are Crocus, who do superb plants and offer a guarantee and also Waitrose Garden. If I had nothing but Crocus vouchers for the rest of my life I would be a very happy gardener.

I agree. I have never had a badly packaged or bad quality plant from them.

Some copper tape to put round pots to stop slugs?
