Lego potter castle?

Curious2468 · 18/08/2018 01:38

My 11 year old is desperate for the large Lego castle set (£350) for Christmas. Initially I thought it was a ridiculous idea but actually it looks like it would keep her busy for a long time (took 3 experts 5 hours to build it on a video I watched). She is autistic and loves Lego and it’s been her main gifts for about 4 years now. Last year I bought a few other items including an instant camera which has sat completely untouched (and been sold today to fund more Lego 🙈). £350 is the top end of our budget for one child so would mean no real other gifts and I can’t work out if that’s completely excessive or a better use of her budget than me finding lots of bits and pieces.

If you’ve got the budget buy it. Itis going to be massive though!
Lego did a Harry Potter series years ago, they also did a hogwarts set number 4842. It’s nowhere near on par with the new one but might be another option.

PersonalClown · 18/08/2018 20:12

Hmmm Do you think DP will buy me Hogwarts for Christmas?
It would go with all my other HP stuff.

Bearbehind · 18/08/2018 20:17

I can't see this being reduced on Ebay- I suspect it will sell out and be sold for a huge premium.

It is amazing, and like I said, I'm not a Lego fan. I do like Harry Potter though.

PurpleTigerLove · 19/08/2018 12:00

It won’t end up on eBay . Most likely it will increase in value . Keep the box in perfect condition if you do buy it .

Curious2468 · 19/08/2018 12:45

Thank you so much everyone. I think I will go for it. It’s only available on the Lego site and I don’t think they are available from places like amazon, I’m going to ask around and see if any friends have legoland passes and keep an eye out for cashback or discount codes. The set looks truly epic and I know she would be exstatic. I don’t think we would see her from xmas to new year while she builds it lol

Do it! The castle is amazing and at 11 I think she would understand the value of it so wouldn't really expect other gifts. Far better to have one thing you really want than 10 bits and bobs you don't.

Bearbehind · 19/08/2018 13:36

I think the Legoland passes only give you 10% in the shops, not online. Unless you live near a shop it probably won't save you much by the time you factor travel in (plus all the other stuff you buy when you go to the real shops! 😆)

NoWordForFluffy · 19/08/2018 14:17

Top Cashback is something like 3.15% cashback. There was also a PayPal promotion where you got £5 off by paying with it. Every little helps, as they say!

TheSeasonOfTheWitch · 21/08/2018 19:24

Seems to be the same number in dollars... do you know anyone in America who can post or bring it over?

PurpleTigerLove · 22/08/2018 00:48

I know someone who has just started building it . There are 37 bags 😍

posieperkinandpootle · 22/08/2018 00:58

If it's about number of presents (I try & match my 3 dc £ spend and no of presents to unwrap) could you hit the pound shop? So say you give each dc 10 presents you could wrap up the castle and 9 £1 presents (hair bobbles, pen set, sweets, notebook etc etc)

nononsene · 22/08/2018 16:33

I'm thinking of buying this for DD. I deeply regret not buying the first harry potter sets as they now go for an absolute fortune on ebay.

Collectors sets like this are never ever cheaper on ebay. people buy them as an investment.

AvoidingDM · 23/08/2018 11:20

Have you realised the people in it are micro rather than mini figures?

I'd spend the same money on the Great Hall and other sets

BobbyGentry · 14/09/2018 23:46

The Lepin Set, bought for my youngest son’s birthday 🎂 🎁 🍰 Will let you know how we get on. Intend to make it over October. Lots of bowls needed for the dining table.

@AvoididingDM Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw & Salazar Slytherin are full sized mini figures and the rest are micro figures which can easily slide in and out of rooms (Dolores Umbridge’s Office, potions room, Great Hall, moaning Murtle’s toilet, chamber of secrets, Gryffindor tower, the mirror of erised (& task rooms to protect the philosopher’s stone.) After building, we’re planning on making a 3 minute stop motion movie of all 7 books 😂😅🤣

SpoonBlender · 15/09/2018 00:11

Following up BobbyGentry - Lepin make pretty high quality Lego clone kits, Chinese and totally illegitimate but a third the price of Lego. Look on AliExpress for it.

I've got a lego addict in the house, and we will get Lepin kits for stuff that's out of print (and heinously expensive from ebay scalpers), but save up for real Lego for kits still in retail.

It comes boxless but with full instructions in a bunch of bags labelled 1.1, 1.2, 2.1 and so on, equivalent to the Lego Bag 1, Bag 2 and so on. It's not as polished as real Lego, but for a third of the price you can put up with the occasional scratched part. Only ever had one missing part and one malformed one.

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 15/09/2018 00:17

I've ordered it for myself, the box is huge, I'd rather let a courier struggle with it than me have to carry it home.

DeRigueurMortis · 15/09/2018 02:12

.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 15/09/2018 08:21

I thought DS would be desperate for this (Huge HP and Lego fan), but he says it will be really big and not much fun to play with after it's built given the micro features and figures. I'm a bit gutted as I was looking forward to 'helping' him build it. He has most of the other new HP Lego that came out this year and loves it.

cloudtree · 15/09/2018 08:24

I don't know if the new one is very different but could you get an old one off eBay?

Mine both loved lego. They have lots of sets including hogwarts, the death star etc. It make me sob to see them mainly in bits now scattered all over the house when I think of how many thousands of pounds worth of lego we must have.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 15/09/2018 08:32

I really want this. I am 46. Go for it!

Jaffacakesfordinner · 15/09/2018 08:37

Do you have a lego store nearby? We are lego heads and had saved to have a few days off work and the lego potter castle instead of a holiday this year. We went to get it and were really really underwhelmed. So we ended up buying the disney castle and the ship in a bottle. Id deffo recommend going to see the potter one IRL before buying i case youre disappointed

merlotmummy14 · 15/09/2018 08:48

You could also ask grandparents and family members if they would like to contribute to it for their gift?

Almondio · 15/09/2018 08:59

We went against our loyalty to Lego last year and bought Lepin sets which we wouldn't otherwise have been able to avoid. We love Lego but frankly, the prices for some sets are ludicrously high.

Lepin arrived, we reboxed it and gave it as Christmas presents, explaining to DCs (teen and pre teen) that it wasn't Lego. The sets were without exception a perfect dupe for the real thing, great to put together, no missing parts, really good value.

If you can find the HP castle in Lepin, I'd go for it.

Almondio · 15/09/2018 09:00

afford not avoid!
