2 year old has everything

I've never struggled with what to buy before but my youngest turns 2 Christmas week and I can't think of enough to get for his birthday, never mind Christmas. I feel like we really have everything already.

I know there is a similar thread already for a 3 year old but there might be other ideas for a year younger.

If he has everything can't you just get one or two small things and then go on a family day out? The concept of not being able to buy "enough" material things for 2yo seems really odd.

Dietcokeobsession · 14/08/2018 20:50

Experience days out to peppa pog world or something similar?

moronseverywhere · 14/08/2018 20:52

Put money into an account for then they are older and just buy a couple of small practical presents?

moronseverywhere · 14/08/2018 20:53

Them when*

Pressuredrip · 14/08/2018 20:54

My kids all have fairly large age gaps so some day trips just wouldn't be suitable as a family, Peppa Pig world is so far away it would have to be a weekend away which would be expensive and not fun for the others. We already get zoo and farm membership as gifts. Maybe I could give a term of tumble tots or similar, but I do find those sort of classes tend to be overpriced.

Assuming you’re looking for actual physical gift ideas;
Garage
Kitchen
Dolls pram/bed
Dressing up rail/clothes
Construction type toys like quadro
Wobble board or indoor climbing frame
Trampoline or outdoor play equipment
Blocks/duplo/train or road set
Easel
Ride on toy/rocking horse
Tent/teepee
Marble run (can get ones for giant marbles)

Pressuredrip · 14/08/2018 20:55

Would it be fair to give one savings as a gift and not the others? Obviously it's better than buying things for the sake of it I suppose.

Monkeymonstermum · 14/08/2018 20:56

Buy a small present or two of something that they have some of already to open (eg duplo, brio train, paw patrol few figures) that way can just be added to the current storage solution - then save your money! You won’t get away with that for many more years!

Pressuredrip · 14/08/2018 20:57

Thanks in need of a lie in. We have all those things except an indoor climbing frame. I have been very tempted with a Pikler and ramp. Maybe I could do the frame for birthday and the ramp for Christmas. Or one of the wooden indoor frames with slides as a joint gift.

my 8 year old freely admitted he didn't need anything for his birthday, that he had everything he needed - so I got some play tat, decorations, and some books I thought he'd enjoy but I wouldn't otherwise have bothered with (TV show related)

For a 2 year old, I'm not sure I'd bother much at all - I'd just wrap virtually any kind of tat that they'd enjoy cheap things like slinky or crayons - after all, they really just want to do the unwrapping, they don't care how much it cost at that age, so they don't really need a main present.

scrivette · 14/08/2018 21:00

I agree with PP, two year olds just like the unwrapping so would get a book/stickers/ball/torch etc.
If you felt bad about the difference in price you could always put some money in an account.

I assume he already has balance bike, scooter and skateboard

But of course Playmobil 123, any Schleich figurine or à book is always a hit

DrWhy · 14/08/2018 21:05

I’m in a similar situation. DS is at nursery full time so had plenty for the time he spends at hom already. He had a toy kitchen, some train set, a playmat, wooden animals and a couple of ride on type toys but for his first birthday and Christmas, smaller things we’ve bought as appropriate and he’s gets every time grandparents visit so plenty of duplo, books, puzzles, balls, animals, vehicles etc. For his 2nd birthday the plan is a balance bike from us, more trainset from Grandma and an easel from other grandparents. I’m honestly lost for other options, we are a 2 hour plus drive from the nearest zoo or similar attraction, he’s too young for craft stuff and loves opening things so I don’t want to just put money in his account.
We said last year that we’d get a climbing frame for the garden but he climbs like a monkey and has no fear so I’m a bit scared to do that yet as we will have to supervise even more closely in the garden than we do now.
I’m watching with interest!

BirdsAndBlips · 14/08/2018 21:06

I would have looooved a Pickler triangle climbing frame when DS1 was 6mo (they still play / use their Montessori chair)

BirdsAndBlips · 14/08/2018 21:09

Oh and any learning resource toy! Mine still play with the peg board at 3,5yo, they love the big magnifier and the geo boards gets a lot of love too

When DS was 2 we bought items from the V-Tech Toot Toot Drivers range. He loved them and we added to it each birthday and Christmas for a couple of years.
DD will be nearly 2 at Christmas and I'm planning buying her something from the Playmobil 1,2,3 range (it's for age 18 months plus) as well as getting the Toot Toot items out of the loft!!

supercalifragilistic2 · 14/08/2018 22:32

Ds has just turned 2 and he's got the following from us/family;

Balance bike, scooter, toy cars/trucks, books, sand pit/water pit (probably not great for a Xmas birthday!). Books, crayons/pens/paper etc.

We did have the following as ideas; play kitchen, slide. Toot toot trains, play tent. I did see someone who mentioned they got their ds a proper wooden sledge as a toddler and it's something that has been played with for years.

If you've got kids of different ages what about a large trampoline for the garden as a shared gift and then a few smaller ones to open on the day.

At the end of the day he will probably be as excited with a £10 compared to a £100 toy. He's not going to notice his siblings get more spent on them or more gifts.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 14/08/2018 23:17

A wooden puppet theatre with fairy tale characters. Then maybe a set of fairy tale books.
Personalised book - lost my name are beautiful.
A beanbag for his room.
The leapfrog ice cream truck is great and v popular at the nursery i work at.
Melissa and doug Latches board.
Sensory toys - bubble tube, different lights, toys with different textures/sounds.
Character bedding/cups/clothing/toys. There's always new programmes you could show him and encourage him to love. Paw patrol has a huge range of merchandise!!

RayneDance · 15/08/2018 08:13

At 2 I got mine stuff from charity shops, nct sales and so on so they had something to open and alot of it got given back to charity.

Sierra259 · 15/08/2018 08:22

My DC have birthdays close to Christmas too, and it's a pain - especially for DC2 as we already have loads of toys/clothes she loves from her older sibling. We put money in savings accounts the first few years and just bought a few token bits.

Add-ons to previous things owned is a good idea. We kept some money back at Christmas and bought a scooter 6 months later, or perhaps a garden toy. We've also done the character bedding and pyjamas thing.

I agree that at 2 they just do not care how much they get/how much is spent on them. Save your money for more expensive years later!

mrsnec · 15/08/2018 08:31

I just get mine clothes and books and Duplo. I also like the wooden toys you get in Lidl just before Christmas. I keep an eye out for them and buy more to put away for birthdays. Last year I got a very cute coffee machine for dd and camper van for ds. I also got a workbench for him that converts to a drawing board and has lots of meccano type stuff with it. They play with that every day at the moment.

AvoidingDM · 15/08/2018 21:28

Exactly the same boat, I'm thinking adding to toot-toot and duplo. He might still be young to notice things but big brother is old enough to notice and old enough to care if LO gets less than him.

AvoidingDM · 16/08/2018 11:41

Another idea I had was Paw Patrol toys which my oldest was almost too old for before he discovered it.

RoseMartha · 20/08/2018 08:02
