Presents for an almost 3 year old who only wants trains!

Hi,

My son will be almost 3 at Christmas (early January birthday- but that’s another issue...) and I’m already starting to think about what to get him. We have lots of toys at home but all he ever plays with are trains and cars! When I ask him what he wants he says more trains! I will get him a couple of bits of new track (wooden) and a couple of new trains, but I’m wondering what else your 3 year old likes?

He does love books (so any recommendations for those would be great) and being outside but already has balance bike, scooter, ride on toys etc.

He has duplo, a toy kitchen, jigsaws and paints etc, but he’s not really interested in these (could change by December I guess)

Any suggestions great fully received as we have Christmas and birthday to cover (plus relatives will soon be wanting suggestions!)

Thanks in advance!

Visit to the National Railway Museum in York? It’s right next to the train station, you could go by train.

Get him trains! When Ds1 was that age, i fretted that he wasnt likeother children and was obsessed with trains. But in hindsight, i should have let him just love his trains, instead of making him try other thing sthat he wasn't interested in Smile

Thank you everyone. Some great ideas for train and non train related stuff! We have been to Thomas land and he loved it so a return trip there is an excellent idea. Railway museum is also on our list of things to do, I think it’s free but obviously he won’t know that!

Yeah NRM is great and has a good gift shop!
Further afield and much pricier but the London Transport Museum is excellent.

FermatsTheorem · 13/08/2018 21:58

Train obsessed myself (slightly sad DS has outgrown the brio).

Yes to NRM! Also, really good bridges for his brio. You can never have too many bridges. And points. Not too keen on the train table myself... why limit yourself your child to a table top when you they can cover a whole sitting room.

I'll get me coat anorak...

BikeRunSki · 14/08/2018 10:15

NRM is free. Obviously will cost to get there unless you live in York.

I went lots with the dc when they were younger. Went last year for a business awards dinner, we ate amongst the trains. It was glorious.

There's a Brio bridge that collapses when you press a button on the side. My 3 year old has had lots of fun causing train crashes with it.

They used to do a set of Thomas jigsaw puzzles with lots of the different engines on.
Iirc they were aged 3-5 so could be a good thing?

BevBrook · 14/08/2018 15:13

My three year old was also train obsessed. One of his favourite presents ever was a battery operated train that went round the Brio track by itself. When we went to the Thomas steam train day he was so excited I almost cried, I just love the pics we have of that day. He also had a personalised Thomas book, there is, or was, a snowy surprise one as well as a birthday surprise!

Aside from the trains he also really liked dice and card games. Orchard do some suitable for little children and there is probably a Thomas board game, matching pairs game etc.

Imagine his little face when he wakes up on Christmas morning and you have managed to move him into a new bed without waking him! There are lots of toddler type beds around but I did find this full size single bed so there must be more around.

Summerdays2014 · 14/08/2018 16:28

That bed is amazing!!! We are having a terrible time with sleep at the moment - getting him to go to sleep and then stay in his own bed all night so that might help!

Thanks for all your ideas today and yesterday. I’ve added lots of things to my amazon wish list! The days out are also great ideas. Thinking of asking grandparents to get us some of those!

I concur with PPs on the wooden train track, you get loads of extra bits for it; bridges, risers, spirals etc

We used to have hours of fun making crazy tracks. Only for DS to play tea party with Thomas, Emily et al.

Have you seen the Duplo trains they come with pieces that the train reacts when it goes over them? He could use the existing duplo to build tunnels for them
