I know I know it's August but I'm having a rotten time at the moment so please indulge me and tell me all about how you'll be decorating this year.

It's our 1st year in our new home and 2nd without mum, last year I worked to avoid anything Christmas, this year I'll be putting up the tree on mums birthday like she did every year, I might join my local NT and try wreath making.

Our new kitchen island is being put in mid November so I intend to bake ridiculous amounts, make mulled wine listen to every Christmas song possible and invite all my friends and family to pop in during the festive season.

I cannot wait for the 1st Christmas bits to come out in the shops. Didn't think I'd ever feel like this again since mum.

What are your plans?

Ah Biscusting I'm definately a red/gold/green/silver/gold/bronze/clear glass decorator.

No pink, teal, lime or any of that malarky.

Might allow purple if its Quality Street wrapper purple not lilac.

Love the Spode Christmas Tree , HomeSense is a great source of treasures , ours is closing and moving to TKMaxx . Xmas Sad

FilthyforFirth · 07/08/2018 17:57

Thanks for the link Woolly! It looks really good, I'll need to build it up over a few years I think

Biscusting · 07/08/2018 18:20

Wait...you guys have a whole set of Christmas themed dinnerware!? As in plates, cutlery, cups that are solely for Christmas time? Why am I just discovering this now??
My mum had Armageddon wine glasses that were only brought out for very special occasions...like the Armageddon 🤔
Her reasoning was that we would break them otherwise.
Ironically she broke them all bashing stuff in and out of the cupboard over the years 🤫😄

SnuggyBuggy · 07/08/2018 18:27

I need to get round to buying a nativity set. Other than that just the usual tree unless I'm inspired between now and then.

QueenOfIce · 07/08/2018 18:31

I love the idea of a nutcracker theme! Why didn't I think of that?! Years ago my mum was the sugar plum fairy so I could do a similar theme in a nod to her!

Ecookshop is great and they often have 10-20% discounts.

I’m going to go for “more is more”. It’ll look like Christmas has thrown up in my house. All golds and reds. Can’t wait!

Stompythedinosaur · 07/08/2018 18:51

Biscusting I love those baubles! Not sure about the gold tree though.

Has anyone tried command hooks on the outside of the house for outdoor decorations?

changingname18 · 07/08/2018 18:52

Yes stompy we put them up 3 years ago. Very discreet & they're still up there now. Not the lights though! I'm not that lazy!

Stompythedinosaur · 07/08/2018 18:54

Thank you, that's good to know!

changingname18 · 07/08/2018 18:58

From memory we had to put them up the day before so they stayed put & it's really simple to hook the lights onto them. Takes about 20 minutes to put up two rows.

Usually I love Christmas but somehow last year I just didn't have the enthusiasm. It was weird.

Hopefully this year I will feel more like it again! Now you've asked, I'm thinking a silvery theme...

QueenOfIce · 07/08/2018 19:19

What about this! Grin

I like the idea of it, but I think it is a bit much for me all day everyday!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 07/08/2018 20:40

Biscusting you put that away ! Xmas Shock Xmas Wink

I don't have a complete dinner set of Christmas crockery ( I used to have the BHS Country Vine -ivy pattern- but the playes were too small. I donated the set to the Charity Shop. Thought about that a long while then bit the bullet)

I have large white plates so just dress them up a bit.

I've got some Hollly&Ivy, Spode Christmas Tree and dark grey/olive shop picture ,
I bought a robin milk jug (Sainsbury)and a robin platter (Matalan)

ILoveDolly · 07/08/2018 20:44

Last November I was recovering from an operation so I watched loads of Christmas tv movies. Totally glorious and this year I will be able to indulge all the decorating fantasies I've been entertaining since then. I have a lot of ivy and evergreen in the garden that I'm planning to use for great garlands everywhere. The smells! Can't wait.

ILoveDolly · 07/08/2018 20:46

Yay "Christmas has thrown up" in my house.
Me too!!!! So much. Last year my husband was in charge of decorating so no thing......

Fabricwitch · 07/08/2018 21:00

Another one waiting to get into our new house (supposed to be mid September) and really looking forward to decorating for Xmas!
There are some really cute tree decorations in the accessorize where I live, but I'm not allowed to buy any more things until we move in Sad
For anyone with storage space it could be worth shopping the sales!
We're going to get the biggest real tree we can fit, decorate with the random decs we already have and evaluate from there! I like the mismatched looked though Smile

QueenOfIce · 07/08/2018 21:06

I think everyone should be granted a Christmas film day. A whole day dedicated to those crap Christmas films that make you feel warm and cosy!

I always save my holiday for December so I can indulge in things like a Hallmark day in my Christmas onesie!

CrazyBaubles · 07/08/2018 21:17

Queen I tend to book a Monday off towards the start of December which is officially my 'sorting the house out for Christmas Day.' In reality, I just to lots of additional cleaning before this, get the tree up then spend the day on the sofa, tv Christmas movies on, working down my checklists (making sure I've bought all presents / sent cards) and crocheting. It's lovely.

For decs, we have a real tree usually. It was once red & gold with white lights. It's now coloured AND white lights, mostly red & gold decorations but with an eclectic mix (we collect baubles from wherever we visit). It also has a few homemade decs given to me by nephew / niece (no dc yet).

I have ornaments that replace most photo frames etc. Kitch snowman & Santa lights that hang in the kitchen & dining room.
Red tablecloth goes on when decs are up, gold table runner etc go on Christmas Eve.
We too have Spode Christmas crockery (they were a present) which comes out on Christmas Eve (ish).

We also now have one of those white twiggy trees with multicolour lights on the ends of the branches from last year when we were away for most of December (inc Christmas). Not sure what to do with that this year - it is suitable for outdoors apparently so it may go in the garden 🤔

Love all this Christmas op. I am on holiday (Croatia) and found a Christmas shop a few days ago! Was in heaven!

DENMAN03 · 07/08/2018 21:19

This year I am changing my kitchen decorations. The last few years it has been a full on chintzy Christmas in there with coloured merry lights etc. I've bought a snow covered fake tree from Balsam Hill! Great sale on at the moment p, and it arrived today. Weighs a tonne! I'm going for classic whites, greens and silvers for the tree and my table decorations.. my excuse is that I had to cheer myself after having to cancel my much anticipated holiday in two weeks due to a knee injury meaning I can't fly.
The front room will stay the same. Huge real tree with white lights and lots of tartan and dark red baubles. Can't wait!

QueenOfIce · 07/08/2018 21:19

Sounds lovely crazy! I always miss the decorations once they're down. I don't understand why so many people complain about them and want them down as soon as they're up!

ILoveDolly · 07/08/2018 21:33

These decorations basically sum up my aesthetic. Add holly and candles and you're done. www.christmascompany.co.uk/religious-christmas-ornaments
I'm always planning on making my own but might just have to buy!!!

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 07/08/2018 21:46

DH often brings the kids to see his parents on sunday afternoons. Guess what my november and december sunday afternoons look like : )

I have baby blue, red and white decorations, plus random ones from places we've been, on the sitting room tree. The dining room one has clear glass with tiny gold wire stars. The kids have trees in their rooms with their own choice of decorations. I'll make garlands from holly and ivy from the garden and whatever I can find in the woods, so there'll be one on each mantelpiece (we have a lovely new fireplace in the sitting room this year so I'm really excited about bedecking it) and a big one up the bannisters, hung with dried orange slices, cinnamon sticks and red velvet ribbons and some discreetely hidden orange scentsicles for added festive frangrance. I'm going to put holly and ivy on the picture frames and over the doors as well this year.

I'd love more christmas dishes. I have enough serving dishes but no dinner plates or bowls. I might have a look in TKMaxx this year, and I think Matalan had some nice ones last year?
