Looking to get my 8 year old one for xmas. Thought i would start looking/researching. All he really does is play games and watch youtube so i’ve read that amazon fires dont allow youtube?

Any suggestions would be great!

Amazon fire has YouTube. Would totally recommend as a first tablet and make sure you buy it on black Friday as they get reduced to around £30-£35

We have Amazon Fire Kids Edition which does everything you're after - though it comes with a years free subscription and after that it costs about £3 a month to maintain access to the online stuff. We bought the latest edition in the black friday sale last year and it was reduced to something like £80. The older edition was cheaper but i don't know if that has Youtube.

I had read online that you need to mess about with the amazon fires to allow youtube but it could be about okder models so thats much better!

My dd has a fire and watches you tube. She has a child account and an adult account though, a child one to access the games she gets as part of her subscription and an adult one that she uses to watch you tube, Netflix etc. She can switch between them easily.

She doesn't have a kids one, but we do pay for the kids package. Dd2 has a kids one though and she does the same, switches accounts depending on what she wants to do. She can also do it herself and is 3 1/2

My dds have Amazon fire tablets. They both have YouTube and loads of games they like. A lot of the games were free.

DD had a Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1 inch last Christmas, it's been great. You can add parental controls as you wish and I bought a 64gb memory card for about £24 to boost the memory so we can download movies and not need wifi to watch them. It was about £130 on a Currys Black Friday deal.

I've been having similar thoughts, my DC wil be 8.5 and 11 by Christmas. Are there any down sides to the fire? Which version should we go for? Will it grow with them? E.g. can we disable kids mode as eldest gets older?

IME you do not need the kids edition for anything other than a 3/4yo. The interface is very 'young' looking.

I found that DS could only have 3 or 4 game apps downloaded at any one time, then it was 1 in one out. Make sure you get the biggest additional memory card you can.

He now has an ipad, and I know they are expensive to give to a child, but it is an awful lot better. Smoother, more user friendly, more apps available and it can store more. Better screen, better camera and video. I also pay for apple music for him, which he uses all the time.
