Do you think homemade presents are naff?

Want to do homemade Christmas presents, but obviously not if the likelihood is people will think they’re crap.

I’m rather crafty if I say so myself so I’m thinking of things such as:

Aprons and felt flower crowns for my nieces
Homemade scented candles
Wood burned chopping board, wooden spoons etc
Patchwork quilt for my baby nephew maybe
Homemade tin of biscuits
Resin jewellery
Hobby horse maybe
Foodie gifts

The idea being I can get a lot done early!

I do love a chutney 🤔

Gottokondo · 06/06/2018 08:49

I like them but I know that not eveyone agrees.

ArfArfBarf · 06/06/2018 08:54

I like them when the giver has made something specifically because the receiver will like it.
Often though, it’s more about what the giver can make than what the receiver would actually like and I think that’s a bit thoughtless.
I don’t think homemade presents are “crap” though, just I try to give presents for people that suit their tastes not mine.l and when I’ve received homemade goods that hasn’t ever been the case.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 06/06/2018 09:01

Oh wow really Arf! I agree that’s no good. I HATE receiving thoughtless gifts, or when people have bought me something just to get me something. One I received a blingy bluetooth headset for my phone. I rarely take calls. So that was odd. I’d rather not receive anything! So I definitely wouldn’t give gifts just because I can make them. I just can never find anything in the shops that would be a nice gift I can afford and can’t make myself.

Similarly I don’t like giving/receiving food gifts because you either feel obliged to eat them or they sit taking up cupboard space.
I see what you’re saying. I definitely don’t want it to be like ‘look how clever I am, making this!’. Now I think I would feel like it would come off like that so now I don’t want to do it 😄
Taking Christmas out of the equation, I might just continue my projects throughout the year and as and when tell people ‘I’ve made this, do you want it?’ And then I guess buy Christmas presents separately.

But that takes me back to my original quandary of what the hell do I buy people?!?!

I love homemade gifts! They're the best, especially if the gift-maker is skilled. Jams, chutneys, jumpers, blankets, quilts... patchwork quilts! Yes!

diodati · 06/06/2018 09:28

Oh and homemade wreaths, candles, lavender pillows, pottery, jewelry, wood carving, plants, paintings.,, love them all!

BestZebbie · 06/06/2018 21:57

Nothing that they will be obliged to keep for a long period if they have not commissioned it/you are not their schoolchild - so scented candles, biscuits (if you have a clean kitchen) = fine, but not decorative items as they may not be to their taste. This can be relaxed a bit for the flower crowns etc (provided you actually think that the recipients would like a flower crown!) as by their nature children change what they use fairly often so don't get 'stuck' with things for posterity in quite the same way.

I love them. I’ve made a home made gift for the last few years, making blankets for people. I made my mum a giant crocheted Supernatural graph blanket a couple of years ago. I sewed one of my brothers a large colourful quilt this year and my Dad one in the year too. Also crocheted my daughter a Christmas blanket. I love making things that are really useful.

vampirethriller · 06/06/2018 22:03

I just made my mother a cross stitch picture of her with all her animals in from of her houseSmile she sounded happy enough!
I've got a friend who always makes me lovely jewellery for my birthday.

DailyMailFail101 · 06/06/2018 22:06

Sorry no I don’t like most homemade gifts, I don’t trust homemade foods so they go straight in the bin, I’ve not received many but sombody made me a photo frame with glitter and those plastic crystals once, it was like they have never been to my house and seen my taste.

It also depends on how good you are at crafts, the hobby horse sounds wonderful but if your not great at woodwork etc. then children may be very honest with what they think of your skills.

lulu12345 · 06/06/2018 22:07

I would definitely prefer something homemade, much more meaningful. By j agree with PPs who have said that unless you’re really sure of someone’s taste it’s best to go for consumable items rather than something that they’ll feel required to hang onto and display! Same goes for shop bought items too but I guess you can return those or eBay them more easily if you don’t like them!

RagamuffinCat · 06/06/2018 22:11

I love homemade presents. I think it shows the person cared enough to put their time and energy into making something for me.

Raaaaaah · 06/06/2018 22:13

I have a friend who gives me homemade fudge each Christmas and it is the best present I receive each year. I have another dear friend who makes me marmalade and it is the worst and I usually love marmalade Grin. I love homemade presents though. They make me think of my friends pottering in their kitchens not stressing in a shop.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 06/06/2018 22:13

They all sound fine, I am sure you put a lot of thought into who'd like what.

Chachabingz · 06/06/2018 22:14

They sound lovely. I just wish I was more creative!
It’s not the same when you buy homemade gifts from a craft fair but when you have made them yourself that shows a lot of thought and effort.

RoseMartha · 06/06/2018 22:15

The quilt sounds a lovely gift and would be a keepsake

Fluffiest · 06/06/2018 22:21

I love the sound of the wood burned chopping board!

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 06/06/2018 22:26

Those presents sound lovely!

Thishatisnotmine · 07/06/2018 00:24

I read 'raisin' jewellery instead of resin in the OP. Raisin jewellery would not be a good present!

LapsedHumanist · 07/06/2018 00:38

Depends how well executed they are really.

LemonadePockets · 07/06/2018 00:43

Hi! First post here, I love Christmas!

We do homemade gifts at my ILs. This year we’re going to make some jam and take photos of DD helping & make a little photo album to go with it. We love home made foodie gifts, DH’s granny’s are both utterly fabulous bakers!

LilMadAgain · 07/06/2018 00:47

A wood burned chopping board would make a beautiful gift. Where can I buy a lavender pillow? They were on sale for seven pounds in Brecon today and it was miniature Angry

lhavepassport · 07/06/2018 00:58

I like homemade gifts. I am also happy to eat and drink things that come out of my friends' kitchens, I have seen them and they are every bit as clean as mine!

lhavepassport · 07/06/2018 00:59

But having just bought a wood burner it will be awhile before I reach gifting standards!
