After seeing how many MNer's were actually vomiting over Christmas, I hope it wasn't because of this? www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5212851/Tesco-ruined-Christmas-Customers-slam-supermarket.html

We bought the largest, cheapest bird we could find (£12.00 from Iceland and it fed 10) We covered it in streaky bacon, slathered it in anchor butter , stuffed onions and bay leaves inside - and honestly you could not tell it was a frozen cheap bird. Would buy this again! Bargain! WWYD next year?

We had duck. No-one likes turkey. Last year we thought maybe if we bought an expensive fancy bronze turkey from the butcher's it might be more tasty and we would like it.

£50 later, we still didn't like it. And had a ton of turkey leftover.

Not making the same mistake again.

£40 for a boned and rolled turkey from our butcher. It was lovely and fed 8 of us with over half left over

Nottheduchessofcambridge · 26/12/2017 16:42

4.5kg bird from local butcher who I always buy my meat from. Cost £20 from him which is half the price of the flashy butcher the other end of the village (turkeys come from the same place Shock).

welshweasel · 26/12/2017 16:51

6kg fresh turkey from Aldi. Just over £25. Was delicious, fed 6 of us with half leftover.
We are having it with homemade chips tonight and then will freeze the rest in portions for curry/stir fry. I love turkey and think it’s amazing value.

Namechange16 · 26/12/2017 17:05

Local butcher, 12lb, £38.

BattleaxeGalactica · 26/12/2017 17:36

Saw a £40 off deal from Heartier on MSE for a free range bronze turkey to feed 10/12. Delivered to the house exactly when they said irt would be, it came with a sausage meat pack (now sausage rolls), sausages and bacon, goose fat and thermometer all for £55. Was a bargain and very delicious. There were six of us yesterday, five today and we still have some left in the fridge for sarnies.

idontlikealdi · 26/12/2017 17:50

3kg Free range turkey breast joint with bacon from local butcher. £40.

Really really good. None of us particularly like brown meat so perfect for us.

Mrsmadevans · 26/12/2017 18:13

2 medium turkey crowns from Aldi for a tenner each , we defrosted them overnight and cooked them Christmas eve loads of butter and bacon on the top, absolutely delicious , we always buy them from Aldis and have never been disappointed .Today we are finishing them up with salad and bits ....lovely.

verystressedmum · 26/12/2017 20:32

Got the m&s crown this year as did the food order but all other years I got a frozen crown from Tesco or Iceland and they were lovely I certainly didn’t notice the difference between those and the m&s.

ButteredScone · 26/12/2017 20:36

12kg kelly bronze £110.

It's a monster. Fed 19 twice - we had it again for lunch today - and there is still loads left. Excellent value per head and it was very tasty. A once a year luxury though. Smile

mullmepopcorn · 26/12/2017 20:55

Last year and this year I have had cook from frozen turkey. A crown from Iceland, and a stuffed crown from Lidl. I've always made a lot of effort, but couldn't these last years. Have to say, it was fine, and so easy. I'm not sure I'll faff in future years. I might concentrate on delicious sides, and let the turkey be easy.

Cooked in 2.5 hours from frozen, fitted on half an oven shelf leaving room for lots of other tasty stuff. Fed four with left overs, would have fed eight generously.

trinity0097 · 26/12/2017 21:02

£65 boneless turkey (not a crown, no bones at all and included thighs without bones) which meant I could use 3 racks in the oven. Worth it for that. Cooked in 2.5 hours, from M&S

StubbleTurnips · 26/12/2017 21:03

Booths Turkey crown for lunch, and a m&s turkey joint for butties. Both lovely.

We put butter under the skin too JaneEyre70. We also dry brined our turkey and I agree with SecondHoneyMoon that the secret is in the preparation. This is the first year I've cooked a whole turkey because (a) I thought turkey was boring and bland (b) I thought it was hard work...
It isn't really too much bother and there's loads of meat left over too.

5kg turkey for £20 from Tesco. Cooked in 2 and a half hours and was gorgeous - no vomiting! It wasn't my choice as I'd rather get high welfare meat even if it means paying more - but taste wise this was great.

helensburgh · 26/12/2017 23:56

1.5kg crown from farm foods
£4.99
We bought two.
One fed.5 of us and the other we are still.eating
Tastiest turkey ever

Dozyoldtwonk · 26/12/2017 23:59

3kg turkey crown for 8 + 4 small children from the local butchers, £27.00. DH took great pride in ‘prepping’ it with all kinds of random fodder (garlic, lemon, salt, pepper, butter, possibly rosemary Hmm) but it was bloody lovely and worth every penny.

Just had some with stilton and cranberry sauce Grin

northender · 27/12/2017 00:05

We bought ours from a local farm for £40ish. Not sure of the weight but 10-12lb I think. I cooked it a la Phil Vickery and it was the best I've ever cooked. I will definitely follow that method again

Notso · 27/12/2017 00:10

12lb free range turkey from my local butcher, £50 with free bacon, sausages, a large pork pie and a wedge of Stilton.
Fed 6 on Christmas Day with loads leftover.

How do people make gravy with a crown? The one year we got one the gravy was disappointing, it needs a wing and the giblets for the flavour.

So true when Nottheduchessofcambridge Tue 26-Dec-17 16:42:14 said "

As a relative of mine used to work for very swanky butchers shop (in a posh market town in the South of England) once told me, most of the meat comes from the same place. There is a meat wholesaler in a certain city that supplies many butchers in that area...He would be asked to go and pick it up. It would then be relabelled at the shop and delivered to Farm shops where the very wealthy go to shop...such a massive con!! Little do they know where their meat really came from :/

Got mine in Waitrose at 3.45 on xmas eve. Reduced from £40 to £9.50

Wasn’t planning on having turkey and have still got a well in days leg of lamb in the fridge which will be great for New Year’s Day now.
