How did M&S or other supermarket Christmas food go down?

M&S Christmas for us, some disappointing items this year.

Turkey (full deboned turkey £65) was very nice, but the normal M&S deboned crown I usually get for £32 which was sold out is just as nice.

Chestnut stuffing and pigs n blankets wreath - pigs n blankets nice with maple glaze. Stuffing bland.

Luxury pigs n blankets - ok, nothing special

Standard Sausage meat pack which we rolled into balls - nice and tasty

Profiteroles - soggy and tasteless

Raspberry & processco panacotta- not nice at all. Too boozey and rubbery tasting

Will probably orders early next year to get the cheaper turkey crown and still get the sausage meat, but off M&S trimmings and desserts from now on.

M&S red cabbage with apple was lovely.

Justmuddlingalong · 25/12/2017 23:26

Lidl rolled shoulder of lamb was tender, moist and delicious. Lidl carrots, parsnips, spuds and sprouts were lovely and at 19p a pack very good value. Lidl goose fat did the roasties fine. Lidl pigs in blankets were gorgeous. Lidl Apple and cranberry stuffing balls were a big hit. Low budget Christmas dinner but high in taste and value. Looking forward to picking at the leftovers tomorrow.

Ordered from M&S for the first time. Just a few bits. DP said his veggie main tasted nice but texture wise it fell apart and didn't look at all like the photo. The mini festive cupcakes were meh.

Sainsbury's turkey crown was good as always. Bought the Taste the Difference pigs in blankets this year and they weren't really worth the extra cost and they were piddly little things. Usually buy Waitrose honey and rosemary ones so I think I'll go back to those next year.

Tesco's pork stuffing balls and M&S's Pigs in Blankets went down well with everyone else (I didn't have any, I'm veggie). M&S's festive nut roast was revolting, I barely ate any (very orange taste to it). Will be back to the Tesco version next year, unless I actually get round to making one myself.

Booths rolled lamb joint with stuffing was lovely
Aldi chocolate parcels very good
Everything else was fresh and home made

Bumdishcloths · 26/12/2017 00:06

We got everything from Iceland this year, and it was all lovely! Irish cream profiterole gateau was a stand out for me Grin

sumsumsum · 26/12/2017 00:11

Waitrose starters - mango and prawn - were truly rubbish. Just about inedible, and cost a fortune. Poor packaging meant that had fallen apart as well.

Dd loved the M&S nut roast, honeyroar!

BrownTurkey · 26/12/2017 00:17

Everything from Morrisons was good, but especially
Christmas pudding
Turkey crown (much better than one from Waitrose last week, though I suspect cooking it in an aga didn’t help it as I am not used to it)
Pork stuffing slab things
Cheese board interestingly good.
Sicilian lemon tart
Mini chocolate pots and panacotta pots

The frozen sprouts with chestnuts were a bit touch and go - for a start i thought they were fresh not frozen when i ordered them, and then they took an age to microwave, but ultimately they tasted ok.

sweetsomethings · 26/12/2017 05:40

Tesco pigs in blankets were lovely . M and s party bits were a bit disappointing not any better than other bits from Iceland

Chocolatear · 26/12/2017 05:58

Had an orange and chocolate bombe thing from M&S. Very disappointing, quite tasteless.

ASDismynormality · 26/12/2017 05:59

Iceland frozen turkey crown, my family enjoyed it but I don't think inlaws were impressed.
Heston Persian Christmas pudding, that was really tasty!

ASDismynormality · 26/12/2017 06:00

We also had an Iceland chocolate snowflake dessert and that was awful.

Oblomov17 · 26/12/2017 06:01

Makes notes!
Seriously it's surprising how poor most of it is.

Bought 2 m&s desserts. Choc roulade tasted absolutely lovely but it should have been reduced and when I checked my receipt I had been charged full price. However it was a perfect Christmas Day dessert, not too heavy after the big meal.
Other dessert was Santa hats made from merangue, cream and raspberry jelly. Looked cute in the box but the reality was a lot crapper than the expectation. They were basically tiny and fell apart or wouldn’t stand upright. Tasted nice but I could have easily eaten a whole box to myself. Plus my mum said afterwards that she had no idea they were meant to be Santa hats!

Roystonv · 26/12/2017 07:05

Iceland turkey crown. Been cooking Christmas Day for 30 years everyone said it was really nice/best ever and it was. I normally buy a more 'artisan' bird, not any more loads cheaper too.

PavlovaPlease · 26/12/2017 07:09

Aldi specially selected beef and turkey were delicious, as were Waitrose pigs in blankets and Tesco finest pudding. Only disappointment were aunt Bessies parsnips (Palm oil too), but that serves me right for being too lazy to peel my own.

ivykaty44 · 26/12/2017 07:14

I had an 18 month mature pudding from Aldi for £4 and we agreed it was very delicious 😋

I normally make my own and this was just as nice 👍🏻

brizzledrizzle · 26/12/2017 07:18

Waitrose turkey, extremely disappointing. We had a prepared joint and they had seemingly removed the skin which us the best bit.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 26/12/2017 07:21

M&S turkey crown was nice and I enjoyed Waitrose pigs in blankets, I'd get those again.

M&S posh gravy was ok. Nothing special.

Not Christmas food specifically, but I got baby parsnips this year instead of full sized one which were must easier to successfully roast! I always end up with charcoaled or caramelised parsnips but these were perfect!!

Fourfantasticfrogs · 26/12/2017 07:24

Mix of Sainsburys, Asda and M&S. special mention to M&S turkey crown stuffed with sausage meat sage and onion and Sainsburys pigs in blankets.
Didn't get to pud but Aldi one waiting in the pantry.

DonutDiv · 26/12/2017 07:26

Morrisons chicken £4. Lovely.

Morrisons bacon, we wrapped around Morrisons 12 chipolatas. £3 Lovely.

Greengrocer fruit & veg £6 Lovely.

Brussel sprouts we steamed, then warmed with single cream, garic & bacon. Bloody lovely.

Lemonyknickers · 26/12/2017 07:27

Yes Aldi Xmas pud was delicious. Might need to up out and buy up any old stock for the rest of the year!

Hoppinggreen · 26/12/2017 07:30

All M&S and all very nice
The dessert was a white chocolate and raspberry wreath which was lovely and nice and light after everything else

RagamuffinCat · 26/12/2017 07:38

We had M&S turkey crown, gravy, stuffing balls, pigs in blankets and red cabbage. I am gluten free so it isn't always easy to find things that I can eat, which are still nice enough for the whole family. We all loved our dinner, best one we have ever had! The turkey was perfect and the stuffing balls were so nice that my brother went back for more!

GeekyBlinders · 26/12/2017 07:42

Sainsbury's pigs in blankets were very fatty. Had an underwhelming caramel profiterole dessert from there too. Everything else from everywhere else was fine.
