I’ve noticed that loads of people are doing this Christmas Eve pyjamas thing. Is there and actual meaning for this or just another trend. Looking on Facebook and about 30 of my friends leaving new pyjamas for their kids to wear tonight? First time ove heard of it?

It was a thing when I was a child. I have always done it for both of my dds.

Pyjamas are probably a thing because they look nice in the photos on Christmas morning - that's why I do it anyway. But I used to get new pjamas at Christmas when I was a child so it's not new by any means.

New clothes at Christmas is a tradition going back to the Victorians at the very least.

It’s the first year we’ve ever done it, I don’t want to subscribe to the whole Xmas eve box but I liked sending them to bed in new pjs!

We all snuggled on the sofa watching the snowman before bed.

OutandIntoday · 24/12/2017 19:35

Mine get a Christmas eve present to open which get everyone in the Christmas mood. It is normally pjs (and was tonight).

PantPlot · 24/12/2017 19:37

Definitely not new, I did it with it mine when they were all under 10's so probably 10 years ago-ish.

I knocked it on the head though, they still get new pj's but they open on Xmas day with the rest of the stuff now

Dd has had new pyjamas for the last 15 years since being a small baby. The Christmas fairy delivers them to my parents house on Christmas Eve, along with some small gift such as a book, sweets or chocolates. Dd loves it - even as a teen it is a really nice part of her Christmas preparation. She then spends most of the day in then and tomorrow. Not Christmas designs - just normal every day PJs. This year is a Harry Potter onsie and matching songs, and a mock 'pick and mix' set.

I always had new pjs as a child.
It stemmed from an auntie who lived in Australia who would send a gift, usually clothes with pjs in, and I would get to open it on Christmas eve as she always rang me and I opened it on the phone. And then I wanted to wear the new pyjamas to bed. It became a thing.
When my auntie stopped buying me clothes as I became a lanky teen, my mum then started as I kept saying I wanted new ones for Christmas as it was always what I did.
Now I am a mum, I like doing it for my children as it feels lovely having new pyjamas. I also get some for my DH too.
It's lovely to put them on earlier than normal, and snuggle down.

Oh right, I like to think I’m up to date on most things but clearly not this... tbh I literally just updated my kids nightwear as they both had growth spurts. I’m not really fussed about what people think of my kids pjs as it’s nightwear it’s all creased by the time they wake up anyway. 😂🙈

It's the only way we all wear a set of PJ's which have the top and bottoms before we all start wearing random sets.

Gemini69 · 24/12/2017 19:45

We've always had new M&S PJ's for Christmas eve.... my kids are in their teens now..... and it's a given Xmas Grin

I love my new christmas eve pj's too .. Xmas Smile

jaimelannistersgoldenhand · 24/12/2017 19:48

It's so that they look good in photos tonight/tomorrow.

Definitely not a new thing ime.

emwithme · 24/12/2017 19:59

I am 40 and am wearing my brand new Christmas pyjamas right now. Always got them growing up, plus a book.

madamginger · 24/12/2017 20:03

I’m 37 and I always got new pjs at Christmas as a child so definitely not a new thing.

Thishatisnotmine · 24/12/2017 20:03

I always had new pyjamas or nightdress as a present on Christmas morning. But I always thought it would be nicer to go to bed on Christmas eve with lively new bed clothes. So that's what I am doing with dds! Not dd1s first xmas but when she was old enough to notice. I hoped it would get her i to a bedtime mood too!

Thishatisnotmine · 24/12/2017 20:04
  • lovely. No child needs lively bedclothes!
herecomesthsun · 24/12/2017 20:04

I took my kids for a Santa themed woodland expedition when we visited granny 2 days ago. They got completely covered in mud and my DS (age 9) had completely refused to bring enough changes of trousers with us because he thought he was a grown up cool dude past needing all that.

So he got bought an emergency set of snow themed PJs to save granny's dining furniture and living room from the mud.

I have bought winter themed PJs and onesies in the past but generally in the Gap/ Boden sales rather than for Christmas eve as such. We have a tradition of special parcels arriving a couple of days after Xmas, at half the cost #tight.

rocky4 · 24/12/2017 20:06

I'm 26 and currently sitting in my new Elf pyjamas... bought for me by my mum Grin

happymumof4crazykids · 24/12/2017 20:06

Definitely not a new thing I had new pjs Christmas Eve as a child and I do it for my children now! Don't do the Christmas Eve boxes though. Just new pjs and a Christmas themed book to read together before bed.

Mrscog · 24/12/2017 20:07

My 2 yo has crashed out in his clothes - he’s going to look bloody great in the photos tomorrow!!!

DotCottonDotCom · 24/12/2017 20:08

We’ve never done it til this year

DH wandered in and gave me and the kids new PJs, I ended up with some Victoria’s Secret pair

Ain’t complaining (YUSSSS)
