Homemade or shop bought, it doesn't matter. Doesn't have to a traditional fruit either.
Mine is not made yet....I'm doing Mary Berry's gingerbread cake later.
Here are two of my previous attempts (both the same Good Housekeeping fruit cake recipe which was incredibly simple and used a jar of mincemeat in the ingredients).

They look amazing! I wasn't going to make an xmas cake this year but now I am. Fruit is soaking as we speak. Working 2mor though. So cutting it very fine. Will need to try and buy ready made icing from somewhere on way home 🤔

thenewaveragebear1983 · 22/12/2017 21:44

Here's mine. I had help from an over enthusiastic 2 year old eating pure sugar and broke my food mixer in the process, so it's not as neat as I'd like!

I would but we accidentally ate it all two weeks ago.

It was delicious. Nigella's chocolate fruit cake!

RatOnnaStick · 22/12/2017 21:51

I haven't made one but I am reliably informed by my mum that she has made one for the children in the shape of Brands Hatch complete with toy cars and Lego minifigures Xmas Grin

Mine is currently adorned in marzipan (I made it, bit soft so more a case of pressing it on than rolling it out, but it tastes delish)

It's drying overnight , then a thin covering of royal icing (it'll have to be either two thin layers or rough peaky icing)

Then tiny holly and berry decoration, in a pattern ( I thought about doing a border round the edge , its a rectangle ) and piped royal icing at the base.

Need to ice mine. Did one for church with Bethlehem on it. Might put snowflakes on mine. I have lots of cutters. Need to buy marzipan. I gave up making it years ago.

Love the ones on here!

dementedma · 23/12/2017 07:43

Here's mine.
Decorated yesterday. Looking forward tucking in although I think it may be squidgy in parts due to overzealous getting Grin

This is from last year. Made by my daughter. The decorations are handmade in fondant.

This is what happens when you let your 8 year old DGN decorate your lovingly made gingerbread cake, but actually the icing is lovely (just icing sugar and clementine juice and a bit of zest).
All your cakes look lovely.

Beautiful cakes!

Glumglowworm · 23/12/2017 10:37

Argh I haven’t iced mine yet. It’s on today’s to do list though. It’s currently only got marzipan on and is somehow looking lopsided and I don’t know how that’s possible because it wasn’t when I flipped it last weekend!

I’m on my own though so will be eating Christmas cake and forcing it on everyone I know well into January! (“But I’m on a diet!” “Don’t worry it’s got loads of fruit in!”)

These are lovely! So varied - some elegant, some funny, all lovely.

Mine's still nude. Well-fed, but not yet iced. I'll get around to it at some point Xmas Blush

I'll regalice it, mark off segments, then hand it over to the family to decorate. I'll lay out piping icing, colours, dragées, sprinkles, sweets, regalice, etc on the kitchen table and let them get on with it. Each person gets to do their own thing in their segment. We end up with a totally bonkers and OTT cake.

Littlepig8834 · 26/12/2017 20:55

Here's mine, the first slice was left for Santa on Christmas Eve. Was decorated just in time!

Maddiemookins any chance you could post that mincemeat cake recipe please? It sounds lovely.

Backingvocals · 26/12/2017 21:01

Love all of these. Well done all you clever people.

DoAsYouWouldBeMumBy · 26/12/2017 22:57

I don't make Christmas cake, partly cos I'm allergic to most recipes, partly cos I don't like fruit cake. But I've just made this Clementine and cardamom cake.

NeverUseThisName · 27/12/2017 09:35

Evilharpy, any rich fruitcake recipe can be changed into a mincemeat cake: add up all the dried fruits and sub the same weight of mincemeat for the total weight of dried fruit. Do not use any added liquids. Do not do any of the soaking or feeding. Apart from this, follow the recipe. It keeps as well as a traditional fruitcake, but does not need feeding and can be eaten almost immediately (very useful for a last-minute cake!).
