I'm doing a little hamper for my grandad (86) as he needs a bit of tempting to eat atm, and currently have some mini jars of jam, ginger biscuits, and chocolates in it.

I was thinking of adding a homemade cake - any other ideas?

Oh, meant to add that he has very traditional tastes.

Well what does he like? Shortbread?caramels? Whole preserved fruit (this would be my personal weakness)? Cheese?

greenlanes · 20/12/2017 19:04

shortbread or cheese n crackers

just5morepeas · 20/12/2017 19:05

Oh, shortbread might work. Thanks!

Would he like a mini bottle of whisky (we have got one for my 90yo FIL) or maybe a bottle of beer?

bookbook · 20/12/2017 19:06

My dear FIL adored nut toffee and always had some Thorntons brazil nut toffee on the go

Longdistance · 20/12/2017 19:07

Does he like sweets like Foxes glacier mints?

PrivateParkin · 20/12/2017 19:07

Does he like sweets? You could get some nice bags of traditional-type sweets, or even make some fudge or something like that?

Rainbowqueeen · 20/12/2017 19:10

Shortbread and boiled sweets

Maybe some tea to go with it

TrampyCat · 20/12/2017 19:10

What about the black and white mints, cough candy twists, some nice jams/lemon curd? Just thinking if things my dad liked when he wasn't eating.

onalongsabbatical · 20/12/2017 19:11

Don't forget savouries - cheeses and chutneys/pickles usually go down well. Naice ham? (Seriously!) What a lovely thing to do!

TrampyCat · 20/12/2017 19:11

Sorry just seem you've already done jams! Some little drinks like the britvic pure oranges you can get then in little cans.

Mrsmadevans · 20/12/2017 19:13

A tiny xmas pud and cake?

Ijustlovefood · 20/12/2017 19:14

Pork pie? Mince pie?

Joinourclub · 20/12/2017 19:18

Gentlemens relish?
Chocolate dates?
Turkish delight?

smashbake · 20/12/2017 19:20

Garibaldi biscuits and a nice bit of battenberg

Dancinggoat · 20/12/2017 19:28

Nectarines
Aldi chocolate. The ones that come separately wrapped so he can eat one a day.

I was talking to my dad about his childhood recently, he’s 79 and was telling me that during ww2 he and his brother used to occasionally sneak dried fruits, like apricots, and that they were a real treat. So I’ve bought him a bag of dried fruit and nuts with apricots. Maybe something like that too?

just5morepeas · 20/12/2017 20:56

Thanks everyone, I think I 'm going to add some boiled sweets as well.
