Dh and I exchange on Christmas eve night once DC are in bed

DC first thing in the morning

ImGoingForATwix · 19/12/2017 07:35

We tend to do everything that’s in the house in the morning (before breakfast for santa stuff/after for under the tree gifts), but a lot of gifts are delivered personally over Christmas Day and Boxing Day when we have family round so there always seems to be an even spread.

PunkAssMoFo · 19/12/2017 08:12

First thing, then the children get to play with their stuff during the rest of the day. They’re so excited to see what santa has bought them, it’s all part of the ‘magic’. As with pp, they will get other gifts delivered by relatives later in the day. I’ve heard it said that it’s working class to do it this way. Dh’s Middle class mum made them wait until after lunch, I just think it’s a bit mean.

TheFallenMadonna · 19/12/2017 08:17

Stocking presents first thing (well, cup of tea for me first...) and other presents mid afternoon/Boxing Day/when family arrive.

TheFallenMadonna · 19/12/2017 08:18

Father Christmas has brought the stocking presents only here. They are wrapped though.

Slartybartfast · 19/12/2017 08:20

they are older and can wait but not sure for how long

I've never heard of waiting to open presents until after lunch until I came on mumsnet. Everyone's downstairs early and everything's opened. Kids go first while I grab a coffee and bin bag for the rubbish.

MustBeThursday · 19/12/2017 08:24

I've always done it in the morning, go in to the living room and see that Father Christmas had been then we'd have breakfast and unwrap presents one at a time taking it in turns. Then probably unwrap more later when we got to grandparents house.

DH (posher than me!) had stockings first thing (before breakfast!) in the morning and presents in the evening ages after dinner. My friend used to have one present at lunchtime and the rest in the evening!

We now do a combo as DC opens presents at home in the morning after breakfast, and then to my DMs for presents there (they live up the road), then on to PILs at dinner time, where DC will have stockings and main presents in the evening.

wendz86 · 19/12/2017 08:24

We open stockings. Have breakfast and then open the rest .

Snowtato · 19/12/2017 08:25

We normally wake up before the dc and have a cup of tea in bed.then wake the dc up and head straight downstairs to unwrap the presents.
I love to watch them unwrapping their gifts.i don’t think i’ll Be able to wait until after dinner.(we don’t do stockings)

TheFallenMadonna · 19/12/2017 08:29

We opened everything in the morning growing up. She's family waited until after lunch. We beefed up the stocking a bit, including the asked for present (only ask Father Christmas for small things...), wrapped everything Hmm and kept the family presents after lunch. Anticipation is part of the excitement.

Ragwort · 19/12/2017 08:29

Stockings in the morning and then presents in the afternoon - after the Queen's Speech. When DS was younger he would have a couple in the morning, either before or after Church.

Shelby1981 · 19/12/2017 08:31

First thing! Even before we had a child, there is no waiting!!

MoreCheerfulMonica · 19/12/2017 08:33

Here, breakfast in bed with stocking opening, any presents received from friends once we get downstairs, but main present-opening with family after lunch.

inchyrablue · 19/12/2017 08:34

First thing, but sometimes with a pause for breakfast mid way.

Lukeandlorelai4Ever · 19/12/2017 08:37

Straight away!!! We love ripping them open!! One year family thought it would be a good idea to wait till after dinner. Most miserable Christmas ever!! Never again!!

MissSueFlay · 19/12/2017 08:47

DD has her stocking/sack waiting outside her door and gets that first thing. Then we're all busy with breakfast, church, family arriving etc. Depending on how the cooking is going we'll do under-the-tree presents before or after the Big Meal. It takes ages if we're with DH's family as there are a lot of people and the kids get involved with the distribution Grin

skippy67 · 19/12/2017 09:48

We've always done stockings first thing in the morning. Then tree presents after dinner at about 4.30ish.

sweetsomethings · 19/12/2017 10:04

Santa brings eveything here and it's all opened first thing . Also don't know anyone who makes the kids wait

Another one that's never heard of waiting to open presents outside mumsnet. Mine, DD and DHs presents to each other get opened first thing. DD is so excited, I can't imagine making her wait until after dinner. All other presents get opened as and when we are given them by friends / relatives during the day.

PodgeBod · 19/12/2017 11:40

Stockings as they wake, opened in our bed. And then downstairs for the tree presents. And then onto my mums for lunch and more presents. Mine are only little so last year they didn't get all of their presents open on the day itself.

yasmin05 · 19/12/2017 11:43

We give gifts on Christmas eve right after dinner.

MsAwesomeDragon · 19/12/2017 11:49

As a child we did stockings first thing, which contained one special asked for toy, and if that was too big for the stocking we were allowed to open that one anyway. Then breakfast and church. The rest of the presents were opened after church and Christmas dinner was in the evening.

Now I'm an adult with my own kids, we do it all first thing. We don't go to church any more (much to my parents disapproval), so spend the day in PJs playing with toys/gadgets we get as presents. Christmas dinner is still in the evening.
