And which one is the best? We only have it in the house at Christmas time and it's dawned me I haven't a clue between them!

Tawny port is served chilled and is delicious! Ruby port is usually served room temperature and is better when aged.

Thank you, so I take it Ruby port is better with Stilton?

I like ruby port but not the tawny, but I don't know why. The ruby is excellent with Stilton though.

Right, I think I need to buy the Ruby port! Thanks!

There are some good LBV ports on special offers in the supermarkets

I've never had tawny port chilled! It's certainly not what people do in Portugal.

Teddy1970 · 13/12/2017 23:30

I might have to try it Glom..

White port is chilled, I prefer tawny to ruby as it’s not so sweet and sticky (I live in Portugal and we often get port as a drink ‘on the house’ in restaurants)

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_wine

Ruby port is the cheapest, most bland port... it is designed in production to prevent aging - this allows a cheaper production, and a more consistent flavour allowing brands to mix to their recipe...

Tawny port has been aged and is generally more complex

Vintage port is the grand-daddy of ports in cost and complexity / sophistication - but only small amounts are produced...

Tawny is the best value for money, providing complexity and interest at a lower price point than vintage port

Thanks for that info *akkakk, very helpful..I think I understand port a bit more now.

We like vintage ruby best, tawny tends to have a 'dirtier' flavour to me (massively non expert). Ruby tastes like more like a rich, slightly sweet wine I guess.
