Salt dough decorations

Hi,

I would like to make some decorations for the tree with my almost 2 year old. Anyone have a tried and tested recipe? I have found some on line but the don’t say how long to bake them for? Also I’m assuming you paint/cover with glitter after they have been baked? Thanks!

I use 2 parts plain flour to 1 part salt and just enough water to make a non sticky dough.

I put them in a low oven (around 60c) for about 3 hours, turning now and then. Leave to totally cool before painting and varnishing.

I’ve found you can use the microwave it’s ready in minutes !
Here’s the recipe -

145g salt
125g plain flour
Splosh of oil

Mix it all up and knead into a dough.
I experimented and discovered a bout 2 minutes on 50% power will dry and harden them sufficiently. It depends on how many pieces you are doing though so keep pausing the microwave to check them and adapt timings accordingly. Remember 50% power NOT full power!

And don’t forget to make the holes before you cook them - if you’re making hanging decorations that is!

Hmmm... well made them with 1 cup salt, 1 cup water and 2 cups flour. They have been in the oven for 4.5 hours now and they are still soft... they are quite thick though... wanted to decorate them this afternoon

I'd like to make these too, what kind of paint do you need?

The small ones we’ve done are great they are now rock hard and we have painted/covered with glitter. I’m very impressed and the grandparents Christmas presents are now sorted!

The bigger ones are still soft though. Thanks for all your advice, will add less water next time and stick to smaller and thinner ones!
