Balance Bike

I'm looking for recommendations for a balance bike for a 2.5 year old. He is tall for his age but not especially physically advanced. Can anyone recommend one?

I got a great one in Halfords, took me ages to get one small enough for my tiny but nimble DD! They had a lovely wooden one that was far too big for us but was a great price for the quality.

Get the lightest one possible - you will ve carrying it or hanging it off the buggy a lot to start with! We got a wooden early rider one but my dc were older and stronger- would prob go for a Islabike rothan if i was buying again ( second hand).

We have a 'Puky' balance bike, its great as its very lightweight to wiz around on but a bit pricey.

Thanks for the recommendations. I might have left it a bit too close to Christmas to find something secondhand, but we have a younger child who will hopefully get use out of it later on so I don't mind if it's a little pricy.

The little PUKY which has a scooter style footrest is great as you can just pull it along when they get tired, instead of carrying and managing a tired child.

Have a look at likeabike, incredibly lightweight and friends kids have used until about age 4

I hugely recommend strider bikes :-) They are lightweight, tough and strider uk put on lots of events to take part in too, my 6 year old daughter has gone from strider to BMX racing and her 3 year old brother is following in her footsteps. This is the Puky we have and its done two children, very strong well made yet very light, we did tons of research before hand and tried others out in halfords before ordering this:

I've seen some by Chris Hoy too that look good.

Islabike is brilliant. They also hold their valuation to resell. Our son loved his balance bike and went straight to peddling with no stabilisers before he was 3.

Thanks so much Nana, that's very kind; I'm nowhere near you unfortunately, not even in the same country

We got one made by the same company that make micro scooters. It was about £90 and my son has used it every day since he was 2 years and 3 months. He's now four and is just getting too big for it so moving on to a pedal bike with no stabilisers (handy as his sister is coming up to 2 and that £90 will be passed down to her hopefully to enjoy as much for the next two years).

As might be obvious, I actually feel quite attached to the balance bike. It's given my DS amazing mobility, is brilliant family days out and has been so, so loved. Really our best investment so far.

Wayyyyy off the point but definitely go for it.

We have a strider, bought because of quality and weight but also because the seat can extend a looong way so it will definitely do a tall child until they are old enough to ride without stabilisers. Some of the other balance bikes get outgrown quite quickly if you have a tall child.

I've ordered dd a chicco one, not expensive but one of the lightest ones I could find. Ds had one from Holfords but it was too heavy so it didn't get much use.
