Stockings in room or hung by the fire once FC has been?

What do you do?

Stockings (empty) hang on the fireplace until December 24th.

In the last few years they've been filled by the big man in red and left downstairs.

This year my five year old is asking for it to be left in his room.

That's fine for now but in years to come am I going to regret starting something that ends up being a pain on Christmas Eve when he and his brother and sister won't go to sleep and all I want to do is go to bed myself?!

Plus, if he realises Santa has been when he's in his room, I'll miss the magic of 'Wow! He's been!' Which was pretty sweet last year!

Downstairs empty then covertly placed in their rooms when we go to bed.
Although one year every time we went into their rooms they stirred. We set our alarms several times throughout the night in the hope of slipping them in but after our4th alarm (5am) we gave up and left them on the landing...

Never had one as a child but have started the tradition with DS'. We put them at the end of their bed to open first thing. DS1 used to bring it into our room, now he flies in with all his small gifts and a mouthful of chocolate. It usually buys me a few more minutes in bed.

Meant to say they start off downstairs and santa brings them up to their bedroom.

We don't do stockings and neither did my parents.

My parents used to use pillowcases and sit them outside our bedroom doors and tell us Santa put them there!

Yes, I know it sounds rubbish and like a cop out but those were some magical memories! Opening our bedroom doors slowly and seeing our pillowcase full of presents!!! Dragging them downstairs, hoping Mum & Dad were awake so we could open them! Will definitely be doing the same with my daughter :) x

Definitely foot of the bed. Magical as a child, and as a pp has said, quite fun for the parent sneaking it in Xmas Smile

I do remember one year when my brother and I started opening our stockings probably noisily in the middle of the night, and our mum came in, told us off, and took the stockings out again! We soon fell asleep and they were there again in the morning. Somehow even that didn't make us doubt Santa Grin

Aw I always had my stocking downstairs as a child but reading this I think for my own future children I'll put it at the end of their beds.

Downstairs every time. If you do it in the room, you run the risk of (maybe not this year but in future years) being up all night waiting for him to go to sleep. Also, there's a possibility he might freak out at the thought of someone being in his room. Do you have a chimney downstairs? Maybe you can tell him he only leaves presents by the fire (read him the night before Christmas) & doesn't have time to put stockings in every child's room when they have a fireplace. If he insists, I'd leave it on the door handle outside his room with strict instructions to come into your room when he wakes so you can share the magic.
