Last year she was desperate for nintendo sun and moon thing and a ninentendo console.

She fixed on this too late so she got something else, perfect to get her that this year but she says she has gone off tech and is fixed on a real pet. there is no way this year we are going to get her a pet....

MAYBE next year or for her bday but will need lots more time and thought.

So...what about the hideously expensive ( but still cheaper than the Nintendo and games) Fur Real Tiger! It does look good, interactive etc however I know she will eventually get more use out of the nintendo esp on car journeys etc...

The Furreal pets are so disappointing. My PIL bought DD one after she had an accident and a hospital stay, and I actually cried (in my defence I was very stressed) at how awful it was and how much money they had wasted on it. It wouldn’t do what the instructions said, and what should have been a lovely present at a shit time turned into a massive frustration.

Nintendogs on the other hand was fantastic. I think my kids were 7 & 5 when they got their DSs with that game, and they literally played it for years. They still remember the first dogs they made and the daft names they gave them, 14 years later. In terms of pence per play, it was literally the best value present they ever received.

Bowerbird5 · 29/11/2017 06:29

You could do Adopt an animal or a Guide Dog. DD had a tiger for a year WWF and I am on my 3 rd Guide dog. You get a toy puppy and Pup dates, a calendar and you can watch little clips on site. That might appeal to her.As it is monthly it won't add much to the cost of Christmas and she can have her Nintendo too.

Scabbersley · 29/11/2017 08:06

Dd15 still remembers Pip, the long haired daschund Grin

Shannaratiger · 29/11/2017 08:12

Definitely get her a Nintendo 3DS. Mine got there first one at Ds5 and Dd8. upgraded to a 3DS and they still play with it DS11 and Dd14. They love Miitopia, Tamadochi life and Dd animal crossing.

DivisionBelle · 29/11/2017 08:40

People making ill-judged, ill researched purchases of puppies for Christmas is one thing. But if she would really love a hamster, or a Guineas pig, for example, and this is something you would be happy to get and look after, I don’t see why it would be a NO for Christmas but a ‘yes’ for mid-Feb, for example.

It is a slogan to prevent impulse buys. Doesn’t need trotting out in every circumstance.

I know a kid who had been desperate for a lizard. Parents researched it, confident they could fit it into their lives and care for it, got lizard and a good habitat for it for Christmas !

Quelle Horreur!

But lizard is cherished and cared for and the boy was ECSTATIC.

Another one saying not the tiger for a ten year old.

SideOrderofSprouts · 29/11/2017 08:59

I have a ten year old Dd. And whilst the tiger would be cute on the day she would forget about
It soon after. It is a rather childish toy for a ten year old but that’s my opinion.

Aweektilltheseason · 29/11/2017 12:56

Im in such a dilema as it would be cheaper for us to buy the tiger and she has a little sister who will get play out of the tiger!

I actually think its brilliant but it doesnt even walk, too big and hard to carry around...

I did see that program with it on but my girls have never been interested in dolls, so they would be more into the tiger anyway.

wombling my dd has played loads of games like that - on computer, where you can be dogs and stuff and raise pups.
she does love those games but I wonder if the Nintendo is a bit like talking tom cat which again she likes but doesn't play a lot

Lovemusic33 · 29/11/2017 15:56

Aweek did you see Philip schofields programme last night where they tested the tiger out on a bunch of 5 year olds? The kids lost interest in it after 12 minutes choosing other toys such as Lego and colouring. It looks like a waste of money.

Why not buy her the 2DS and then maybe plan to buy a pet for her birthday? I’m not against pets for Christmas or birthdays as long as the pet is wanted and it’s been thought through. I would have munched rather have a pet than a toy when I was a kid and was lucky to be surrounded by many pets.

Aweektilltheseason · 29/11/2017 16:24

Yes I did see that program. But my dd adores animal toys she never went to dolls at all. I just don't know what to do.

Have you seen the soft toys from Hansa www.amazon.co.uk/Plush-Hansa-Persian-Type-30cm/dp/B0027I4040/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=hansa+cat&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1511972875&sr=8-1 ?
My daughter loves animals and animal soft toys, she saw some hansa toys in a shop and would love one (she’s 13 and a bit too old for the tiger but has some of the fureal pets which she never plays with).

RJnomore1 · 29/11/2017 16:39

Look I'm sorry but this is not a crisis and I don't understand why you are in a flap not knowing what to do...

She's not getting a pet, she hasn't asked for the tiger, everyone's saying it's not a good present especially for her age group, and you know she does want a Nintendo (just she wants a pet more) so where is the problem? Am i missing something?

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 29/11/2017 16:45

personally I would buy the DS and a small furreal toy. my dds 9 and uses her 2ds loads. she more into animals than dolls but has had more enjoyment out if her ds. she got a giant beanie boo last year and he's v well loved.

the big furreal dragon is £40 in the factory shop and Nocto the bat was reduced to £16 on amazon.

you know your dd and what she would use and appreciate more.

Aweektilltheseason · 29/11/2017 17:13

We went to visit fc this week and I asked her what she going to ask him for thinking it would be the Nintendo she didn't get.

She surprised me by asking for a pet. She had vaguely mentioned pet a while ago but not in relation to Xmas. I went through in great detail with her why we can't have her pet right now. So I was surprised she was adamant she only wanted To pet. She then said she had... Gone off tech.

I'm torn because people who have reviewed the tiger have said... My dc wanted a pet and now don't ask for one and
.. It's like a real pet...

It's the closest thing to a pet I can get her! She wants a pet, not a single thing else! This tiger is the closest thing to a pet I can buy, but it's bloody expensive! But... Cheaper than the ds she said she isn't bothered about anymore... But

I know she will get into it abd will get more out of it. Hence my dilemma.

Aweektilltheseason · 29/11/2017 17:15

Also rj whilst this is in her budget it's a lot of money for us to be spending.

If we had lots, and other people to buy for our dc I wouldn't be on here asking for advice. It's a tough age, next year I'm sure she wouldn't want the tiger... And not buying the ds this year means I have a great gift to give her next year at a tricky age when they are not into toys and the nintendo 2ds xl may have dropped in price by then!!

OP posts:
RJnomore1 · 29/11/2017 17:16

Right have you sat her down and said categorically there is NO WAY a pet is coming for Christmas so what would she like instead?

RJnomore1 · 29/11/2017 17:17

I mean don't waste time listing reasons and debating it,, just a very clear this is not happening, so if you don't come up with something else yourself Father Christmas will choose for you?

Lovemusic33 · 29/11/2017 17:28

It the 2ds will get used a lot more making it worth the money?

The tiger is nothing like a real pet, she’s 10 so she’s probably going to be disappointed that it’s not a real pet? No one has a tiger as a pet anyway Grin.

Why not just talk to her and explain that santa can not bring real pets as elves make toys not live animals? Then suggest a few other things to her?

Aweektilltheseason · 29/11/2017 17:56

Yes I have done that rj thanks just to be clear I have helped people with similar dilemmas on threads like this in the past

Aweektilltheseason · 29/11/2017 17:57

Her special toy she sleeps and carries everywhere is a tiger

OP posts:
chocdog · 29/11/2017 18:09

You can sponsor a Siberian tiger through WWF.
You might be able to find a local dog to walk through the Cinnamon Trust. (Volunteers who walk dogs for old or disabled owners.)
Tamagochi? Do they still exist?

RJnomore1 · 29/11/2017 18:10

So what did she say???

chocdog · 29/11/2017 18:12

Tamagotchi would be ideal. Then you can get a Nintendo next year.

Cakefortea1 · 29/11/2017 18:34

She is probably just saying that about the Nintendo in the hope you get a pet! My pet mad daughter has had a few fur real toys and they are no substitute at all. A 5 minute wonder and not fair if it’s just going to end up as her little sisters. I’d make her write a new list for you.
