Dd1 is 6, 7 in March and has asked for one of these for years. Dd2 is only just 3 and used to be very chewy so it was always a no but she'd be fine this year.
Question - is she too old? She's not a toy player more board games, big imaginative play etc but construction is generally good.
What's the best one??

I got a really lovely wooden one from Haba. It’s got loads of add ons if she likes it that you can get for Birthdays or future Christmas presents.

whojamaflip · 27/11/2017 21:17

Watching with interest as my 14 yr old ds has asked for one of these for Christmas! So no I don't think your dd is too old Grin

RoganJosh · 27/11/2017 21:17

We had a Galt one. I don’t think six is too old, and it’s something that will last for the younger one too, and that they can do together.

PickAChew · 27/11/2017 21:19

We got a Quercetti one for DS2, a few years ago. Actually quite bemusingly fiddly to set up, so it didn't get played with, much, even though he loved it when it was done.

flingingmelon · 27/11/2017 21:20

We are getting the Galt one with extra marbles.

DS is four but really it's for me. I'm thirty eight Grin

We got the Quadrilla marble run, years ago. It’s lovely. It has loads of interesting blocks that do things like alternate where the marble comes out, or change direction. There’s a cool spirally bit for them to roll round too.
It’s a really clever toy and totally suitable for DDs age.
I love wooden toys anyway, but I’d recommend this one.

JellyBellies · 27/11/2017 21:22

We have the galt one. We bought it years ago and it is still played with. Boys are currently 6 and 8.

StinkPickle · 27/11/2017 21:23

We have bought the Hubelino one that is compatable with duplo for 4&6 yr olds Christmas this year.

We have masses of duplo and also have a 2 year old so like that the marbles are too big to swallow.

It looks much sturdier than the half marble runs too.

JellyBellies · 27/11/2017 21:24

And if she likes construction then she will love it. You can make loads of different combinations every time, chose how long you want he marble to run for, have different tracks and race them against each other, etc

DullAndOld · 27/11/2017 21:24

a fine toy, for the children as well as the adults...Grin

Muddlingalongalone · 27/11/2017 21:41

Wow thanks for all the suggestions. Looks like She's definitely not too old then.
Some of the wooden ones look amazing however precious snowflake is "allergic to wood (aka she doesn't like the feel of it😀) so brightly coloured plastic is the only option!

I could have written the OP myself so am watching with interest for recommendations.

We have a couple of the galt ones (charity shop bargains - we put super granny on the case) we also got a bag of marbles as they like to have lots of different coloured marbles to run down it. DS2 (11) likes to built it so high that DD (6) can't reach the top but DS1 (14) always helps her out. I don't think I've outgrown it yet either.

Equimum · 27/11/2017 22:37

We initially bought a ‘house of Marbles’ set, which is fairly basic, but doesn’t fit together very well. If you want plastic, I believe the Galt one is better. We now have a smallish wooden set, but both of ours are quite challenging for our nearly five year old, and even DH and I enjoy the ‘challenge’ of it.

polkadotdelight · 27/11/2017 22:39

I am nearly 40 and love marble run!

Muddlingalongalone · 27/11/2017 22:42

Omg ripple I hadn't thought of that! Dd2 would knock it over if dd1 did that and all he'll would break loose see wooden block castle incident when I went for a shower yesterday morning
Looks like Galt's a winner then. Assume Argos and wilko versions will fall into the cheap and impossible to put together??

Bought a galt one for my nephew for Christmas. From reading reviews it seems to be one of the better ones, though obvs have to wait a few more weeks to see out out of its box!

I'm now hoping someone buys one for my daughter (already got her a gift, so not wanting to overindulge her myself!), or I'm totally getting her one for her birthday. For me...

Isadora2007 · 27/11/2017 23:32

If you ever see an ELC one in a charity shop get it as they were the best ones ever. So gutted I chucked ours... didn’t know I’d have chikdren number 3 and 4 after 9 years. 😂
