Christmas tipping - who and how much?

We've been living abroad for many years in a country where tipping does not really exist. Since returning people tell me that it is customary to tip postmen and binmen at Christmas. If this is the case, can you all tell me how much as I have no idea!

I tend to tip our postie £10-20. Bin men and veg box delivery man £5-10. Amount tends to depend on how flush I’m feeling, I’m never quite sure how much people typically tip either?

Trialsmum · 26/11/2017 18:03

Well according to mumsnet you must tip the postman, binmen, delivery men, anyone who serves you any food or drink, but never EVER give a teacher a present, they’re just doing their jobs 😂

dementedpixie · 26/11/2017 18:06

I don't tip the bin men or postman. Have tipped window cleaner and bin cleaner though

MohoBoho · 26/11/2017 18:13

Does anyone give their hairdresser an extra tip at Christmas?

megletthesecond · 26/11/2017 18:15

I only tip the paperboy, usually £5.

I never see the bin men or postman/woman and wouldn't tip them.

Passthecake30 · 26/11/2017 20:10

I don't see the bin men, but would tip them.

I get teachers something Smile

blueskyinmarch · 26/11/2017 20:14

I want to tip my lovely young hairdresser when i go just before Christmas. I don't tip routinely when i go so was thinking of putting £25 in a card for her. Does that seem reasonable?

Floralnomad · 26/11/2017 20:17

I give our lovely postman £10 and the dog groomer gets £20 and a tin of chocolates / biscuits . Our binmen are far from helpful , they got nothing . The hairdresser gets tipped every time . I also always bought teachers gifts in primary school .

Changednamejustincase · 26/11/2017 20:19

What? I didn't know you were supposed to tip the postman and binman!

Madbengalmum · 26/11/2017 20:23

I get our postie, who we now know fairly well a small gift, and the dog groomer gets a pressie and chocs for her staff. Also take a nice gift to our favourite two restaurants maitre d's.
Never the binmen though, as they aren't helpful.

VioletCharlotte · 26/11/2017 21:14

Really? I had no idea people did this. I never see the postman or the bin men so wouldn't even think of ripping them. I do buy my hairdresser a bottle of fizz though.

SpeckledyHen · 26/11/2017 21:23

Yes . Postie and bin men £10 .

Stompythedinosaur · 26/11/2017 21:29

I always tip our postman £5-10, he is very helpful.

I haven't tipped the binmen before but think I will this year, torn between putting some cash out for them to split (but how much) or some beer.

tootsieglitterballs · 26/11/2017 21:29

I’m intrigued how people tip the postie and binmen.... someone tell me how to do it please!

I’m never about when the bin men come, and the postie always just leaves our parcels somewhere safe for us, he rarely knocks (and comes anytime between 11am and 4pm these days!)

SimplyNigella · 26/11/2017 21:47

tootsie I'd be interested too, I end up stalking our postman for the whole week before Christmas getting more stressed each time I miss him. I give wine as I don't know his name (rarely see him but he's really helpful in hiding our parcels when we aren't in) and it feels rude to give him money in a card with Postman written on it.

clary · 26/11/2017 21:50

Paperboy or papergirl please :D (my DC!)

£2-3 or a small box of Q street is plenty tho. DD was amazed to get £15 from someone on her round last year - he gets the FT tho so maybe he makes loadsa money :)

jocktamsonsbairn · 26/11/2017 23:32

Lol some of the teacher present threads are a bit Hmm
I never thought about tipping the postie but he is good so might put £5 in a card and give him that to buy beer so he's not lugging it around.
The binmen I would but the same ones do our school and come round at the worst times blocking the car park at morning start time or staff lunchtime/nursery pick up. No pattern to it do you can't second guess it, It's really dangerous at times and means you risk not getting back in (no parking in road) if you nip out to the bank, chemist, shop etc at lunchtime as we only get 45 mins and at least 10 mins of that is spent helping kids with their lunch. Just wish they would do the nearby streets at those times and the school when everyone's safely inside!

MsHarveySpecter · 26/11/2017 23:38

Postman gets £20 in an envelope stuck to the front door with his name on it

Nothing for bin men, never see them and anyway our council tax is ££££££££££££

Cleaner gets a weeks wages and wine

MsHarveySpecter · 26/11/2017 23:40

Secondary teachers don't get a present
Primary teachers get a bottle of prosecco

Friend who teaches in smart boarding school however gets Fortnums hampers, cases of wine etc

Stompythedinosaur · 27/11/2017 01:06

I stick the postman's tip in an envelope on the front door with his name on. Is that rude? I'm not normally around when he passes.

Redglitter · 27/11/2017 01:09

I never see my postman and the bin men are getting nothing as their driver is the most inconsiderate pain in the arse

VioletCharlotte · 27/11/2017 07:55

I'm amazed that people get newspapers delivered.. didn't realise that Still happened either!
