What are we all reading this Christmas?

I love a good Christmas books thread, so let's have one Xmas Grin

I'm currently reading Winter Solstice - bought it last year in the Kindle Christmas sale specifically to read during this run-up, after seeing so many people here rating it so highly.

I'll also re-read The Mistletoe Bride by Kate Mosse - I love a good ghost story at Christmas. Which is why I'll also be re-reading all the Chilling/Thrilling/Mysterious Christmas Tales books - they're 90s children's/YA books but I bloody adore them, they're the ultimate comforting, nostalgic Christmas read apart from the Megowl which can sod right off

Christmas Carol, obviously. And maybe a bit of Sherlock Holmes.

Any other recommendations? I've just decorated the house and curling up with my Kindle, coffee, mince pies and twinkly tree lights is one of my favourite things about Christmas Xmas Smile

I've struggled to find anything that has really made me feel festive for the last few years. I tend to stick to a Christmas carol and the Xmas Factor by Annie Sanders (it's a chic-lit book that's not to everyone's taste but it is fantastically festive).
I also squeeze in the night before Christmas with my nephew. Would love some ideas so will he following this thread 🎄

I’m determined to start reading again this Christmas so looking for suggestions as well....

ClashCityRocker · 26/11/2017 14:21

There's a collection of Charles dickens Christmas stories free on the kindle which I've got. Not read yet (apart from a Christmas Carol).

I'm currently reading NOS4R2. It's probably not one for a warm fuzzy glow but is Christmas related... In a kind of most unfestive way.

I remember when I was wee I loved the Animal Ark Christmas stories.

Walkthroughthefire · 26/11/2017 15:15

Omg. The megowl horrified me! I thought I was the only person who'd read that book.

KatieKookaburra26 · 26/11/2017 15:25

I’m also looking for suggestions, would like something old fashioned!.

BroomstickOfLove · 26/11/2017 20:51

The Dark is Rising is my favourite, and The Box of Delights. I have There's Something About Christmas on my Kindle ready to read in December. I read Winter Solstice last year, and I quite enjoyed it but didn't love it. Sherlock Holmes is a good suggestion - I hadn't thought of him as a Christmas read, but it's perfect for beside the fire radiator.

The children love Holly and Ivy by Rumer Godden, as do I.

I’m reading Twelve days of Christmas by Trisha Ashley.

Only a couple of chapters in. It was recommended to me, so I’m hoping it makes me feel all cosy even if it’s 12c and pouring down outside Smile

HeyMicky · 26/11/2017 20:57

Another Dark is Rising fan here. I save for Xmas eve then read it all in one day.

obviouslymarvellous · 26/11/2017 21:03

I'm reading the mistletoe seller - it's easy going and so far not bad! Will be keeping an eye on this thread for some ideas x

MrsKnightley · 26/11/2017 21:04

Just read a brilliant book "Things Jon Didn't Know About." Moving, very insightful read. For full disclosure, the writer is a good friend - but wow!!

LabradorMama · 26/11/2017 21:06

Place marking for amazon order this week, thanks guys. I’m working my way through all the festive magazines, I’m halfway through Country Living at the minute

Insomnibrat · 26/11/2017 21:09

So far, in anticipation of Christmas, I've read Murder on the Orient Express (charming but not very xmassy), Poirot's Christmas and I've just started The Hogfather by Terry Pratchett which is the first Pratchett book I've read and I'm hoping I can keep up with it.

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 26/11/2017 23:31

Another Box of delights fan here, which I guess my username gives away. I feel like I'm due a re-read of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norell which I find oddly christmassy. Or I might take refuge in Wilkie Collins Grin

TheDuchessofDukeStreet · 27/11/2017 06:19

The Thirteen Days of Christmas by Jenny Overton is lovely if you like childrens' books.

Jaffalong · 27/11/2017 09:06

After reading everyone's suggestions I've ordered two copies of the Mistletoe Bride, one to give as a gift & one to read myself. I've also ordered a Quentin Blake illustrated copy of The Box of Delights to give as a gift. I ordered it from the Wordery and there were only a few copies left, be quick if you want one as it would make a lovely gift.

MarsBarsAreShrinking · 27/11/2017 11:33

Comfort & Joy by India Knight is a lovely, festive read. It's a follow on from My Life on a Plate so you do need to have read that first or it won't make a lot of sense!

Tinselistacky · 27/11/2017 11:34

Smyths toy book so far!!
Glanced through several supermarket brochure also.

New year resolution is to read more!!

Aweektilltheseason · 27/11/2017 11:41

Good choices on here. I have women in white, wilkie Collins, or Anna karenia...

goose1964 · 28/11/2017 22:20

I've just finished the twelve days of Christmas, I used to have another Christmas book by Trisha Astley but I think I lent it to DD it had a great recipe for mincemeat flapjacks in it.

BroomstickOfLove · 29/11/2017 12:15

The Twelve Days of Christmas by John Julius Norwich is rather nice, although not really an essential read.
