Don’t do them? Or bull up with a Toblerone from Poundland and a big bottle of bubble bath?

Polly99 · 26/11/2017 07:26

I’d think so.
They are old enough to understand your circumstances.
Could they maybe do a stocking secret Santa for each other?

Crumbs1 · 26/11/2017 07:29

If you can afford it’s nice to continue but they sound like they’re old enough to understand if money is tight. Maybe do small, cheap ones - a few chocolate coins, a satsuma, a pair of tights or socks and a magazine.

Sofabitch · 26/11/2017 07:31

Stockings are mt favorite part. But if mu mum had explaindd she couldn't afford it i would have understood

That being said i usually spend less than £10 on stockings. I fill it with bath stuff..bubble bath, sponges, shower gel and make up wipes, cheap photo frames that i fill wih a self printed photo etc wilkinson and poundland arewhere I get most of the stocking things for my teens.

Slartybartfast · 26/11/2017 08:12

I shall have to hunt out small stockings I can see.
currently we have sacks, which doesnt help. and they do love them

I stopped when youngest DC got to 18 I think it was, may have been 20. However, I do buy them some tree presents, bits and bobs that go under the tree. My DCs would've had me going on forever, but they had sacks too and it was just too much to carry on with!

I think I basically stopped when they'd left home

Polly99 · 26/11/2017 08:31

Slarty, in my family we use actual socks. You can get a surprising amount of little things in them, and it’s quite fun stuffing them.

Slartybartfast · 26/11/2017 08:33

even better polly 'Grin

We have stopped but then after talking to dd she decided she would still like a stocking. I have compromised and have done a gift bag with a few little presents in, so far she has;
Giant jar of Nutella
Tobalrone
Head phones
Lip balm set
Bath bomb
A book

Sofabitch · 26/11/2017 09:03

A sack is insane!

I'm a big fan of less is more.

HectorAndKiki · 26/11/2017 10:49

Fluffy socks, Wilko makeup, w7 makeup, box of candy canes, big toblerone and Lidl’s/Aldi or Savers for a bottle of something fizzy or a ready made cocktail (they do those pouches quite cheaply that you can freeze). Have a look in Poundland for Cd’s, books and nice stationery like note books and jazzy pens.

All these types of things I’ve put in DD stocking, she’s 19, and she’s been pleased with them.

Slartybartfast · 26/11/2017 11:10

oh good idea and a small bottle of something fizzy - alcoholic

My rule is if they are in attendance (there is six of them) they get a stocking. I love doing them though :) it is full of cheapy bits though- headphones, sweets, booze, makeup, pencils etc.

ColonelJackONeil · 26/11/2017 11:30

I think it's nice to do a stocking esp if your gift to them is going to be money or something they know about in advance. But make the stocking contents cheap but fun. Also you say you give them a sack so I would downsize a bit.

QueenOnAPlate · 28/11/2017 12:26

I have several adult children and we do a £10 handmade secret Santa which works really well and could be a way of changing your traditional stockings?

We have a £20 budget for supplies and the emphasis is on effort rather than stuff, typical past efforts have been homemade cakes, a song about someone, photographs framed, collage posters, knotted gloves, flavoured oils and curry spices, secret family recipes mounted in a book etc. We all much prefer it to tat, and we do it when the little ones are in bed. It's great as a transition for the 20 somethings into being thoughtful but not overwhelmed with present buying.

givemushypeasachance · 28/11/2017 13:06

Our parents still do stocking type presents for us but as people have said, doesn't have to be expensive gifts. Some of the most appreciated things have been mini Christmas puddings (I'm the only one who likes them!), mini pots of nice jam, a chocolate orange, lip balm, hand cream, that sort of stuff.

Slartybartfast · 28/11/2017 18:48

oh i like that Queen

Us adults have stockings, so there's no cut off point here. If it's because money is really tight, then explain they can have a stocking or a present. Having said that stockings don't have to be expensive, a good old tangerine (which you may be buying anyway), Cadbury Xmas chocolate treats 2 for £1, shower gel £1, DD has a pack of Primark pants (£3.50) and Primark gloves (£1) in hers as short of money herself and needs some. If you have girls looks out for hand creams, lips balms on offer.

HoneyDragon · 29/11/2017 11:12

In my friends family the late teen adult siblings all set a budget and do each other’s stockings. It’s really cool. Would they be up for that to keep the tradition going?

mamas12 · 29/11/2017 11:18

Did anyone else do what I did and took in The side seams of the stocking/sack on lean years so it looked as though it was still full and brimming and also buying bulky but cheap presents.

Would that work if you use the same o es each year

ChaosTrulyReigns · 29/11/2017 11:19

That's genius, mamas!

I've got my teens emergency power banks - single use - no friend of the environment.

Found them on the checkout at Morrisons for £4.

GherkinSnatch · 29/11/2017 12:39

I've been getting some of these for my SILs and a couple of friends - not that I do them stockings but they're ideal stocking fodder I think. I use them myself and love them.

GherkinSnatch · 29/11/2017 12:41

Aaah posted too soon.

*I do something like that in a stocking, because they're not expensive and I think it's the thought that matters.
