Hi there, I have limited shopping time so I'm thinking of getting the teachers a personalised tree decoration eg Best Teacher Miss Hall from Kate 2017, there are really gorgeous ones out there (inc deals if you buy 3 or more!) are these usually appreciated or would a bottle of wine/chocs be better?

That's the kind of thing we put in the bin in our house (sorry). Best teacher stuff does my box in. Im not keen on wine or chocolates either - get your LO to write a lovely personalised card.

I’m a total grinch and don’t really like getting that sort of present. Obviously I don’t let it show and say thanks to everyone that does buy me things. Cards are nice. I’m also short of colouring pencils for the classroom...

DeepPileTinsel · 25/11/2017 23:03

I'd say you're better getting a £5 costa/starbucks card or chocolates. Or get your DD to make a card.

A Christmas tree is really personal.

I dont think so ... i dont want to sound awful but work and home are seperate .

WhatInTheWorldIsGoingOn · 25/11/2017 23:03

Then I don’t believe you are a teacher lily. No teacher I know would throw away something like that. My tree is covered in decorations. The oldest as old as my career. Those children are grown up but I think about them every Xmas. I love them.

Sparklesdontshine · 25/11/2017 23:07

Don’t do it, they won’t like it. Voucher or card.

I’m sorry to say I’d bin as well. Home made things go in a box but something ordered by someone’s mum with a generic message isn’t really meaningful. Other stuff that isn’t personalised goes to the staff room mug cupboard/charity shop.

DeepPileTinsel · 25/11/2017 23:09

Well no, my MIL wouldn't throw it away - hence her School Box that she keeps in the attic that has decorations she's been given (and gratefully received) but never displayed over the years. She likes her house to look a certain way, and 30 years of random baubles/best teacher mugs don't fit that. She's more than a teacher (or retired teacher as she now is, in fairness).

2boyz1girl · 25/11/2017 23:12

Really? Thanks for the honesty, we have received these over the years & have loved them but I guess teachers get so much stuff it's meaningless to them

Maybe have the kids make these?

They do look super cute!

DeepPileTinsel · 25/11/2017 23:17

It's not that it's meaningless, but if you think about it - 30 children to a class. Christmas gifts and end of term gifts could mean 60 presents coming in to their homes a year, just from pupils. Span that over a 30 year career (my frame of reference) and that's 1800 presents from pupils. You'd need a Self Store lock up to store it all. A card with a note of thanks from you can go into their evidence folder, or in any case takes up a lot less space, and something consumable isn't hanging around for all time.

fruitpastille · 25/11/2017 23:18

I like personalised things like key rings/pens/notebooks/stickers but I probably wouldn't put a work related bauble on my Christmas tree. I have things from my own kids on there. Honestly a thoughtful note of appreciation in a card is more than enough.

WyfOfBathe · 25/11/2017 23:19

I would love it, but I'm a secondary teacher so don't get nearly as many gifts as primary teachers.

I do always think it's a bit sad when I see "best teacher" mugs or teddies in charity shops, but then if someone received one a year for 10 years they probably wouldn't have space to keep them all!

2boyz1girl · 25/11/2017 23:30

Glad of the opinions, would love a christmas decoration myself but then I'm not a teacher, mumsnet is great for things like this!

If you’re in primary, it can be 30 a year...
