Me and my toddler made some bird feeders this morning for our garden.
We made a nice wreath shape.

I was thinking of him making some for his uncle (has a beautiful garden in the countryside) and one for his granadad for christmas.

Do you think they make nice gifts from him? We will "package" them like this.

Those aren't yours though, they're stock photos. So do yours look like that or are they a bit less polished?

NannyR · 24/11/2017 10:04

I think they are lovely, if I had a garden I would love to receive one.

MsMarvel · 24/11/2017 10:06

Yeah it would really depend on whether your toddler made ones look anything like the stock pictures of some ones you found on the internet....😂

Floralnomad · 24/11/2017 10:07

If you want to give them something that’s made by him then just let him draw a picture or something as it will be very obvious with something like the bird feeder that he has had minimal involvement in planning or executing it , as there is no way a toddler made something like that .

TheSpottedZebra · 24/11/2017 10:10

As someone who feeds garden birds, may I just say that that is a really impractical shape, as the wreath falls apart and all the seeds fall down.

Then the rats come.

scoobydooagain · 24/11/2017 10:14

For granddad possible fine, but really not sure about uncle, would not have thought the average uncle/aunt/friend would want toddler homemade stuff but parents and grandparents may appreciate it.

RoganJosh · 24/11/2017 10:16

It’s cute, practical and consumable so won’t clutter up a house. Sounds perfect to me.

MrsMotherHen · 24/11/2017 10:16

We havent done the ones in the picture.
He did alot of it himself scooped bird seeds into a bowl with a little cup. I melted the lard for him (not piping hot) and he poured it in the bowl and mixed all together with wooden spoon. Then we scooped the mixture into cake case together. So I think that is enough involement to say he made it.

Here is our one we made this morning. They arent half as good as the stock photos but dont think there half bad.

Would not use as much lard and put all dried berries on the front of the christmas one and maybe use a bunt cake tin

They look perfect any one would love them in the garden put some ribbon on and maybe that clear wrapping paper

MrsHathaway · 24/11/2017 10:21

TBH I think bird feeders are a great present for adults who don't want clutter, regardless of who made them.

Unless they have cats. If you have cats then bird feeders are bait for prey ...

AnnieAnoniMouse · 24/11/2017 10:29

It was clear from your post that you weren’t saying the photos were of yours.

DS’s look good, and yes, he did plenty enough to call them his. Another thing you could include are a couple of photos of him making them & holding the finished product, they’d be nice to have after the birds have been given the treats.

I think they’re a fabulous present from DS. I’d just get some Christmas ribbon & brown gift cards & write the usual & let DS ‘sign’ them.

I’d love to get them from nieces & nephews, friends kids etc.

MrsMotherHen · 24/11/2017 10:31

I know his grandad would like it and his uncle likes feeding the birds and has all kind of feeders in his garden along with a bird table. His auntie might even enjoy one she loves her garden and would love anything he made her.

@AnnieAnoniMouse thats a lovely idea for the tags i will get him to colour and "sign" them himself.

I would love to receive these. Much nicer than more pointless tat.

Marley45 · 24/11/2017 10:38

I think they're lovely. And it was obvious from your first post that you hadn't made the ones in the pictures!

stayhomeclub · 24/11/2017 10:40

I think these look great and I would be glad to receive one!

nobutreally · 24/11/2017 10:41

Great idea OP - and although I agree that the wreath shape is likely to mean they fall apart at some stage, I am planning on nicking this to do with my dc (who are substantially older than yours!)

Ttbb · 24/11/2017 10:43

I think that bird feeders are a great idea but not sure about the shape as someone said above.

Caulk · 24/11/2017 10:46

Could you do some christmas tree shaped (using a cutter?)

ACurlyWurly · 24/11/2017 10:52

I love these! and would certainly prefer one to the toilet roll covered with glitter and cotton wool tree decorations. I am hoping i dont get another clay dish covered with paint and hand prints again this year I have 14 DN's and there is only so much space for these things to be kept (and dont put the salt dough ones in a damp loft as when i got them out before a visit they had got damp and moldy) .....I have turned into a grumpy old woman Shock Sad

If I get presents from DN's i prefer either photographs or something with a shelf life. these would be a perfect gift for me. I might even have a go to make one myself.

MrsMotherHen · 24/11/2017 10:56

Heres the front of it. The shape is a bit wonky but its our first attempt

Those saying the shape is impractical they can be placed on a bird table i suppose would the birds eat it from a table? Will put ours on the table and see.

You can make these in Christmas cutters - lighter and a bit more stable, as well as being festive.

Here's an example from a blog (not mine).

MrsHathaway · 24/11/2017 11:00

Wreath would work on a bird table but then wouldn't look like a wreath Confused

MrsMotherHen · 24/11/2017 11:03

Mrshathaway thats a good point it wouldn't. I love the little mini ones they are great. ......runs to ebay to get cutters
