Ceiling decorations

So last year was the first year we were in a proper house of our own and had a proper tree (I lived at home, so did my dh, so it was family decorations. Then I was in halls at uni so had a tiny tree. That was followed by a flat so we just had the tiny tree. Then we lived with my dad so it was all his stuff).
Anyway, personally we don't like colour themes with decorations. Our tree is a complete mix of everything, no specific colours at all, exactly how we like it. Last year we just had the tree.
However we are in the process of moving to a nicer house, and so this year we would really like ceiling decorations as well.
We have an open plan living / dining room (through lounge), so we thought that ceiling decorations would look nice. Chains corner to corner, and a small decoration in each triangle. Then a centrepiece in the middle of the room. (I know it may sound like too much, but I think it will be fine).
My question is, what colours? I want a mix as I don't do themes. But I'm wondering how to mix them?
So far I've seen plain gold, silver and red chains and small decorations, as well as two colours mixed together.
Our table wear is red and white, so I thought maybe more red in the dining area to compliment that?
Any ideas welcome (and please no comments about it being a bad idea or anything).

I haven't seen anybody have ceiling decorations like that for about thirty years! I'd forgotten we used to have them like that when I was young.
I would probably choose two colours and have them on alternate corners and, if you don't want them to match, choose different colours for the hanging decorations.
