Starter on Christmas Day

Personally, I would rather not have a starter and leave more room for the main event, but DH's family always like one, so I compromise and do something fairly light.

There are two non fish & seafood eaters in the group and I can't be bothered with the faff of different starters, so all seafood is out.

I was thinking off a terrine, served with leaves rather than bread so people can have as much or a little as they like and it can be prepared in advance.

Do you know any good terrine recipes? Saw a duck and pork one which is highly rated on good food, but worried it might be too rich.

Or any other ideas for a light-ish non fish starter?

What are you planning to do?

Thanks!

Oh that sounds good! I’m like you would rather not have a starter as it’s normally soup here, then either prawn cocktail or pate .
This year since I’m hosting I’m just going to do some canapés Small bruchessattas cream cheese with smoked salmon that sort of thing.

We just have some canapé stuff from M&S & the like. They do a lovely Cornish cruncher dip which is great with breadsticks, then just an assortment of nibbles. We have that at lunch time then eat about 5.

We have had a small bowl of homemade soup, small portion of garlic mushrooms (with 1 piece of bread), pate or a mini cheeseboard (2 crackers, spoonful of chutney, a few grapes and selection of 2/3 cheeses).

I don’t like having a starter on Christmas Day to be honest, but parents do. When we hosted, the cheese board and pate were the easiest to do as prep in advance, then it was just a case of putting it all on plates and bringing it in

We're considering a light, vegetable starter this year...always eat so much for the rest of the meal, that we've decided meat/fish/anything heavy isn't necessary at the beginning as well!
(Usually do antipasti or gravadlax).

This may not appeal to those set on something very traditional, but I rather like the idea of
(Hugh F-W's) Leek, Feta and Mint Terrine. Or something similar, anyway.
