What would you include in a cheese hamper?

I want to give my SIL a little luxury gift this Christmas, because she's had a very hard year and could do with a bit of tlc. She loves cheese so I'm thinking of a little hamper with a Camembert baking dish, Michel Roux's Cheese book, some crackers, chutney and 3-4 cheeses. I'm thinking a Camembert (obv), a nice smelly Stilton, but after that I'm not sure. Probably a hard cheese but not a cheddar.
If you're a cheese lover is there a particular one you'd recommend? Is it better to go for a plain cheese than one with bits (fruit/nettles) in it? And how much is too much?
there are stupid strict protocols for gifts in DH's family and adults don't buy gifts for each other but we have to buy for adult "children" Hmm so I thought I could pass it off as a hostess gift because she will almost certainly do a family dinner over Christmas. I thought I could offer to bring the cheese Grin I'm trying to hit that balance between bringing a course and pampering her a bit, without technically crossing the line that obligates her to buy me a gift in return. When she comes for dinner she'd probably bring me flowers or wine.
I should add that while some of the family will have a little cheese she would be the main enthusiast.

We had some Blacksticks Blue last year which I loved. I've ordered extra for this Christmas as I loved it so much!

Rubyslippers7780 · 13/11/2017 17:08

What about adding a bottle of port? To go with the cheeses...

goose1964 · 13/11/2017 17:36

I'm from Somerset and IMO you can't beat a good farmhouse cheddar, something like Greens or Quickest, one that comes in a wedge and has rind on, occasionally they also have a small amount of blue in the cracks. Also some cheese knives

goose1964 · 13/11/2017 17:37

Quickes not quickest

NoWordForFluffy · 13/11/2017 18:43

Or get a whole set of cheese knives, like this!

We've got a cheese axe(!) which is ace!

Maria1982 · 13/11/2017 18:47

For a hard cheese, if you don't want cheddar, how about:
Lincolnshire poacher (hard, British, sharp)
Or a manchego as the non uk option.

But you can get really really nice cheddars as well.
Second the poster who recommended going to a cheese shop if there's one near you.

Mmm cheese

Fekko · 13/11/2017 18:49

Don't forget quince jelly, fresh walnuts and honey. Mmmmmmmmm

Fekko · 13/11/2017 18:49

Oh and posh crackers

Fekko · 13/11/2017 18:50

I'll be round in a minute...

KittiKat · 13/11/2017 18:50

Figs go absolutely wonderfully with cheese!

bitofabelly · 13/11/2017 18:55

Stinking Bishop 😉

youarenotkiddingme · 13/11/2017 19:01

Aldi has some lovely cheeses in ATM.
Lots of different hard cheddars and roulades.

I'm also doing the same for a colleague who loves cheese and has helped me out massively recently with my disabled ds.

I was going to do a litre cheese board and cheese knife - and I'm also pinching your idea of a camembert baking dish!

A little bottle of rose and crackers too.

FurryDogMother · 13/11/2017 19:16

Cheese nut here :) I'd like some Stinking Bishop or other washed rind, smelly cheese, a nutty aged Gruyere, the Great British Cheese Company's Lime and Chilli Cheddar, and a really good Stilton. Also quince jelly and some chilli jam, please!

chicaguapa · 13/11/2017 19:22

Came on to say a baked camembert dish but you already have that.
YY to the figs and the Fudge's crackers.

TheAnswerPrancer · 13/11/2017 19:27

Waitrose cheese counter has some very cute heart shape Godminster cheddar cheeses. Never tasted one so can't vouch for the cheese but would look very pretty in a hamper.

cheese axe Shock Grin

I shouldn't have checked on this thread on an empty stomach! Adding to my list with a rumbling tummy

Babybel, laughing cow, primula with chives. Maybe a cheese string or two.

Inthetropics · 15/11/2017 02:34

I loooove cheese but my sugestion is nuts. It goes perfectly with cheese. A botle of really good wine would be lovely. I'd also recomend canastra cheese if you can find it.

Skittlesandbeer · 15/11/2017 03:20

Consider a smoked cheese, and a hard cheese with truffle bits added.

I usually don’t include blue cheese unless I’m sure the recipient loves it.

I’d also add matching wine, dried fruit/quince paste and a small wooden board?

mantlepiece · 15/11/2017 03:35

My favourite at the moment is Cornish Yarg. Very Moreish!
I also like Jarlesberg, very nice nutty flavour.
For cheddar I do like Cracker Barrel, but usually only see it at Christmas.

Freezingwinter · 15/11/2017 06:59

As its christmas hamper you must include wensleydale with apricots or cranberries!!! It's my absolute favourite Grin what about some chutney? Aldi are doing luxury crackers which I think would be well appreciated too!

NoWordForFluffy · 15/11/2017 08:13

Cheese axe:

What would you include in a cheese hamper?
KiaOraAura · 15/11/2017 08:17

Swaledale and Gorwydd Caerphilly are both wonderful. Can I recommend The Courtyard Dairy here. I dont think you'll find a better range anywhere Smile

Namethecat · 15/11/2017 08:19

Another yes for Comte. How about Yarg, it is wrapped in nettle and is very nice.

moonlight1705 · 15/11/2017 08:21

My favourite is Y Fenni - a Welsh mustard seed cheese........gorgeous.
