My 4yo DD loves history. For Christmas I want to get her something special to do with history. I just don’t know what there is, I’ve thought about maybe some books or a trip somewhere (although I’d prefer something she could unwrap). Any ideas at all?.

What about an age appropriate interactive world globe?

KatieKookaburra26 · 13/11/2017 21:07

Her brother already has a globe

What about a colour in cardboard castle about 1 metre high?

KatieKookaburra26 · 13/11/2017 22:05

Ds aged 4 loves history.

English Heritage membership - they do fab things for children all year round.
English Heritage do history games on their website. Guess who with historic figures and operation with a knight. Top trumps. Playing cards with castles on. Also dressing up clothes, swords etc.
Playmobil vikings.
Playmobil pyramid.
Melissa and Doug castle. Lots of good wooden castles about with trebuchets etc.
Wooden castle blocks - Melissa and Doug do good ones but look up the brick builder in the USA -amazing bricks.
Lego train (the Xmas one) is old fashioned looking.
A street through time book.
The book people have Shakespeare for children.
Maid Marian and her merry men dvd (second hand I guess off eBay).
Wilkes do a cheap Lego style castle and pirate boat. Not as good as Lego mind but a 10th of the price.

If I think of anything else I’ll pop back!

DVDs of films set in the past eg Mary Poppins (1910), Ballet Shoes (1930s)

Chillywhippet · 13/11/2017 22:48

What about a make your own lavender bags kit - buy some dried lavender, cut up old pillow case, tie with ribbon?

Chillywhippet · 13/11/2017 22:50

DVD when she is older - a secret garden and a little princess.

KatieKookaburra26 · 13/11/2017 22:53

I was thinking about getting her the original books of secret garden and that genre. I also like the lavender ideas as she loves to do homemade stuff as that’s how the old people did it.

English Heritage is a good idea. There are not that many properties in the SE area but Dover Castle, Hastings and some others in 1-2 hour drive do host regular events with dress up and lots of hands on experiences.

The membership is worth just for going to Dover Castle, it is so expensive.

Also look for other events during the year like Loxwood or Herstmonceux Castle who have annual medival fairs with jousting.

The drawback of those are the stalls with so many lovely things to buy..
