My son had only asked for Lego for Christmas.

Do you think I should just get Lego or should I try and encourage other toys?

He lots of other toys at home that he hasn't bothered with for months on end ,
Like- imaginext, turtles , hot wheels etc

IME Meccano is shite and a Lego fiend wont enjoy it. It depends on why he likes lego (thrill of building. themes for playing, making his own stuff etc.) At that age I'd just get him what he's asked for, when he is older, if it the building aspect that he likes, then I'd recommend Fischertechnik

Go with Lego. Keep the boxes and instructions. The sad day comes when they only want cash.
Ã…nd that Lego will come in useful again...

TefalTester123 · 11/11/2017 20:34

Yes to keeping instructions and boxes. Our old Lego now funded XBox and games.

RippleEffects · 11/11/2017 20:34

Have you come across lego advent calenders yet? From about £12 (on Amazon) upto £20 plus for the latest star wars ones.

I'm on my third lego loving child phase. Lego friends this time. First (DS1) was lego city, second (DS2) was superheros and star wars DD is mixed lego and making her own inventions and Lego friends.

Lego is brilliant. All my son has wanted since he was about 4 is Lego. He’s about to turn 8 and now also enjoys Star Wars, nerf guns and Minecraft but really, his life is Lego. It’s no bad thing apart from the fact my house is a permanent Lego exhibition.

howcomes · 12/11/2017 00:56

There are also some pretty good Lego ideas books out there too which are great if you have a lot of random lego pieces. Lego is awesome :)

BrieAndChilli · 12/11/2017 01:05

DS2 is lego mad, last year I got him other stuff too, he’s barely played with anything else except the Lego.

I have just bought him a Lego pop up book, it arrived this week and it looks amazing, lots of flaps and tabs to pull

Allthepinkunicorns · 12/11/2017 08:45

My 4 year old ds is the same, he just wants Lego. I have got loads of things that arr lego themed like colouring pens, books, bedding and a cushion etc you don't just have to buy lego sets. Also lego storage for mini figures and the ever growing collection of bricks if you haven't already got these.

Henrythehoover · 12/11/2017 08:49

I have been asked for star wars lego. It keeps him quiet so I'm going with it especially now he knows how to follow the instructions.

No rule that gifts have to be diverse... if lego makes his little heart happy then lego it should be!

Happy building!!!

AvoidingDM · 14/11/2017 13:22

My 6yo is exactly the same. So has a small mountain of Lego coming. I've a few non-lego ideas but really

Last year I tried junior meccano - omg - it's so frustrating the screws don't stay tight. DS hardly looked at it and hasn't noticed it's been removed from his room into my charity bundle.

GrockleBocs · 14/11/2017 13:27

@CannotEvenThink have you seen the Edison in action? Is it as cool as it sounds? Seriously considering for ds if so!!

CannotEvenThink · 14/11/2017 14:09

Yes grockle we have one.

PrivateParkin · 14/11/2017 14:17

Yea, definitely get it! Its well worth it OP. We have bought Lego for Christmas and birthdays for the past 3-4 years! It's timeless, as a PP said. Also what about a Lego clock, Lego soap, etc - or is that Lego overload?! Blush

GrockleBocs · 14/11/2017 16:24

Grin excellent, thanks. I think me and DH want one too!

ShesAStar · 14/11/2017 16:38

My DS is nine and has only wanted lego since he was five, every Birthday and every Christmas! I’ve bought other things but he only plays with Lego and occasionally nerf guns so I just get more Lego! I dread family asking what he wants because it’s always the same thing and they thinks it’s boring! ‘Not Lego again!’

IlPorcupinoNilSodomyEst · 14/11/2017 18:24

DS has been having only Lego for about 8 years now - he's nearly 13. We keep the boxes and when he's 17 he can sell it all to buy his first car! (Seriously, huge investment)

AvoidingDM · 14/11/2017 20:25

That's actually a comfort to know that he's still going to want more Lego in future years. I know I should only think one Christmas at a time but I'm complete out of non-lego ideas for his birthday or next year.

Cuppaand2biscuits · 14/11/2017 20:38

Can anyone offer me any advice on how to store all the lego? We have loads which is currently sorted into colours in many many tupperware boxes. I need a better system. My ds aged 4 plays with it everyday, he chose to sort it by colour.

PrivateParkin · 14/11/2017 20:51

Cuppa yes storage is an issue here too! We have some Ikea drawers/tubs (trofast I think?) stuffed with Lego. We roughly sort by theme eg superheroes, Scooby Doo etc. I tried to sort by colour but it ended up being me who did all the sorting and I was just making work for myself. I like the look of those big drawstring bags that are also play mats but never actually tried them. Got my ears pricked up for any ideas on here!

Cuppaand2biscuits · 14/11/2017 21:17

Similar to the drawstring bag we always put a blanket down understand the duplo so I can just gather up the corners and tip it back into the box. It doesn't work with lego because it takes to long to find the small pieces.
