would you bother with a leap pad or innotab for a 3 year old or just go straight for something like amazon fire kids tablet?

PIL want to get DD some sort of a tablet/handheld games console for Christmas but I don't know much about any of them. I know you get kids content included for the fire & have to buy games for the other 2 but is there much difference in the types of games & what you can do with them?

Not shocked at all. Anyone whose kid watches TV shouldn't be either, especially as interactive games are better than a watching a screen with no interaction. But use common sense: do and limit the screen time considerably. At 3, thirty minutes a day max, and used instead of TV, not as well as would be my aim. Also recommend the Kindle Fire.

Definitely the kindle fire. We tried the leappad and it was so slow and clunky and frustrating compared to a proper tablet! Both mine have had kindle fires for kids from about 2 and now have samsung galaxy tabs which are brilliant!

Also with the kindle fires, we got the 2 years kids protection with them when they were on offer. It meant that if either of them accidentally broke theirs, amazon would replace for free no quibbles or questions asked!

So many judgey people on mumsnet about dc having tablets - irony being they are using mumsnet / technology for their own relaxation, but their kids aren’t allowed to...! Confused No one is saying by giving a 3 year old a tablet you’re going to stop going outside and spend hours glued to the thing. It’s all about moderation.

Anyway...

Op I would go straight for a kindle fire. Get one of the squidgy protectors for it and they’re pretty bombproof. You can download tons of free games and apps and the parental controls are great.

My son is 5 and has autism and learning disabilities and he has both a kindle and a leappad. The leappad is hardly touched to be honest. He much prefers the games and apps on the kindle. It’s been amazing for him to be honest- for a lot of children with autism tablets are very beneficial in helping them with reading and pen control skills etc as they don’t like to interact with adults in the same way as other children and they find it less confrontational. (Sorry I know that isn’t what your threads about just can’t stand the judgey crowd who don’t really understand why people would let their child have a tablet...!)

Don't feel ashamed, I think some people are being unnecessarily judgemental.

dd2 had an innotab for christmas when she was 3. It was rubbish so she got an ipad when she was 4.

She is 8 now (and still has that ipad) so they might have got better, but I would go for the kindle fire kids. I have heard good things about them.

I'm thinking about this. Ds is 2 and doesn't watch tell but will watch music videos on youtube. He's recently consented to watching stories to such as the grufalo. He has dropped and broken my phone twice though. ........

He's not one to sit still and we are outside a LOT but I'm thinking it would be useful for half an hour while I cook dinner in the winter. I'm pretty resistant though as I explained seen the horrorendous behaviour of my nephews over their tablet and consoles
