Son absolutely loved the film and I would love to get him a book for Christmas, which do you think would be appropriate for his age, 12.

Is it feasible to take him there? That might mean more. You could do the Normandy beaches too.
Otherwise I’d search we2 books for children to ensure there’s nothing too horrific in view or described.
You might be able to get a newspaper from the day or day after which he might think was a special thing to get.

Unfortunately no couldn’t take him there, but like the newspaper idea.

I will have a look around - I'm sure I've seen a book of photos around here somewhere. Maybe see saving private Ryan? A bit US focussed but still a decent film.

What has Saving Private Ryan got to do with Dunkirk?

Sorry but it’s not the same setting. Private aryan was set during D Day in June 1944 and they landed at beaches in Normandy (directly south of Portsmouth area). Dunkirk was 1940 and Dunkirk is North of Calais not too far from the Belgian border. Will try and attach a map.

The 'My Story' series are good, DD has read a couple and there is one about Dunkirk, true stories from children's point of view

Ok - I got confused. My grandad was at both (poor sod) and refused to ever go back to France.

Jill Paton Walsh's The Dolphin Crossing is a children's book about two boys who take a fishing boat to Dunkirk to try and help rescue soldiers. Just had a look and Faber have reissued it. It's pitched a bit older than the My Story books - I'd say very top end of 9-12.

Or there's one called Durkirk: The Real Story in Photographs which the Works are doing for a fiver.
