Son absolutely loved the film and I would love to get him a book for Christmas, which do you think would be appropriate for his age, 12.

TIA

Is it feasible to take him there? That might mean more. You could do the Normandy beaches too.
Otherwise I’d search we2 books for children to ensure there’s nothing too horrific in view or described.
You might be able to get a newspaper from the day or day after which he might think was a special thing to get.

Happybell · 24/10/2017 08:07

Unfortunately no couldn’t take him there, but like the newspaper idea.

I will have a look around - I'm sure I've seen a book of photos around here somewhere. Maybe see saving private Ryan? A bit US focussed but still a decent film.

A1Sharon · 24/10/2017 10:34

What has Saving Private Ryan got to do with Dunkirk?
Sorry, that sounds rude but not seeing the relevance.
There is a book here?
Or what about a trip to the Imperial War Museum or Churchills war rooms, if he is interested?

Fekko · 24/10/2017 11:13

Same setting.

Makemineacabsauv · 24/10/2017 19:19

Sorry but it’s not the same setting. Private aryan was set during D Day in June 1944 and they landed at beaches in Normandy (directly south of Portsmouth area). Dunkirk was 1940 and Dunkirk is North of Calais not too far from the Belgian border. Will try and attach a map.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 24/10/2017 19:23

The 'My Story' series are good, DD has read a couple and there is one about Dunkirk, true stories from children's point of view

Happybell · 24/10/2017 21:55

Thanks all.

Ok - I got confused. My grandad was at both (poor sod) and refused to ever go back to France.

CheerfulMuddler · 26/10/2017 16:33

Jill Paton Walsh's The Dolphin Crossing is a children's book about two boys who take a fishing boat to Dunkirk to try and help rescue soldiers. Just had a look and Faber have reissued it. It's pitched a bit older than the My Story books - I'd say very top end of 9-12.

CheerfulMuddler · 26/10/2017 16:34

Or there's one called Durkirk: The Real Story in Photographs which the Works are doing for a fiver.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 26/10/2017 18:40

The Snow Goose by Paul Gallico

singadream · 27/10/2017 23:46

Totally different but has he read War Horse?

IJoinedJustToPostThis · 27/10/2017 23:48

The Machine Gunners by Robert Westall, if he hasn't already done it in school.
