Hope this isn't a repeated post (apologies if it is)!
Just wondering which way to go with this as DH and I have VERY different opinions! First baby due beginning of November so will be around 8/10 weeks at Christmas!
I'm happy to literally do NOTHING spectacular for Christmas and just carry on as normal as baby will be so small and asleep. However, DH wants to start new traditions with walks, new things, blah blah blah.
I can see where he is coming from, as it will be DS first Christmas, but in my eyes, next year will be the year to begin these things!?
Heeeeelp!!

I think you’re both right! It is lovely to mark it as a new type of Christmas but you’re right that the baby will sleep and not know so much. It wouldn’t make it a worse Christmas to start these things this year and even though the baby won’t know, you both will.

Our DD will be six months at Christmas so aware of things but clearly won’t understand.

We have got her a personalised stocking, getting her a couple of small presents but so far that is about it. Tradition wise we might decorate the house a little more than usual as she will like the lights and colours and we have for her a Christmas outfit.

My ds was about 12 weeks old for his first Xmas. I didn't even buy him any presents. Honestly couldn't see the point!

My DS was born first week of last November.
It was a great opportunity to get some rest as DH had been back to work about 6 weeks st that point.
We did do a little stocking etc mostly for our benefit.
DS favourite thing was laying under the Xmas tree together looking st the lights

DD was due Christmas day, so I had a stocking (just in case) and a couple of small bits like a tiny sudocreme for the nappy bag, a rattle, a Christmassy bib etc.

She didn't turn up until the following day.

One thing we actually did do for her actual first Christmas was reading "Twas the Night Before Christmas" as her bedtime story - and that is still a tradition now, as she is about to turn 12! That book is now kept separate to the other Christmas books and comes out in the Christmas Eve hamper (don't do a hamper this year - MAYBE next year for the book and new pjs, but really wait until DC is 2 at least for proper hamper enjoyment). (Our hamper contains her stocking, the book, new PJs for all the family, Lush festive bath bombs for DD and I, and nice hot chocolate for bedtime drinking - it comes out after dinner to put out the stocking, then DD goes for her bath, into new PJs, has a hot choc and back upstairs for bedtime story and an snuggle for a good sleep - other families do it as an activity thing to keep DCs occupied during the day on Christmas Eve, so have craft kits or DVDs etc).

Maybe compromise on something like a nice walk together to see the lights but not going overboard with doing everything this year? So talk to your DH about how small DC will be and that you'd like to do something new and festive, but that would be nice for you 2 - and that you are happy to add in more things next year when DC will be more able to enjoy them.

It's lovely that he is so into it already!! Xmas Grin
