When do you put your tree up?

Just that really!

I'm having a c-section on Jan 4th and live in a different country to both my family and DH's, so it will just be us and baby DS for Christmas at home. His family will be over visiting us at the end of November and I wondered if it would be too early to put the tree up for it and have a sort-of 'mini Xmas'? What do people think?

We put ours up the first weekend in December

SP00KYLilBucket1 · 14/10/2017 17:42

November 15th, did it all the time as a kid as it was my mums birthday and now do it as it's my sons birthday. The house is like a grotto!. Can't wait to do it again this year.

Will be doing mine sometime in early November this year (After the 5th though.). I already have a few cheeky decorations out on display. Xmas Grin

First weekend in December! Always a real tree but non drop and it seems to last for a month.

The first weekend of December

When the DC were at home, sometime after the end of term, we would go and fetch the tree at the weekend, then they would"help" decorate it.

I like the sound of "mini" Christmas though, that would be nice. But I would probably not leave it all in place that long....surly everyone would be fed up of it by "real" Christmas and it wouldn't still be special?

Flisspaps · 14/10/2017 19:11

I do mine the weekend the DC finish school, so between 15-23 December

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'm going to put it up - I won't get fed up of it as I love admiring the sparkly decorations! I might get fed up of re-hanging things after the cat and toddler have be at it though Hmm

DH and family are French and the French seem to have a more low-key Christmas than Brits (I personally prefer our way of doing it), so our 'mini Christmas' won't be the quite the same as if it were with my family. Will still be worth doing though. MIL loves mince pies and since neither they nor mincemeat exist in France, I'll get some on my next trip home and make her some. They do always have champagne on Christmas day though, so happy to include that (although I'll only be able to have a small glass, obviously). In my family we always play board games, but all my good ones here are in English. I might see if I can get one in French that everyone can play.

One thing they do do, is have a seafood aperitif before the Christmas dinner, mostly of different oysters and sea urchins, both of which I and DH cannot stand. Not sure if we should include these, since they also cost a fortune??

The weekend after Thanksgiving. Decs started I'm my house mid September. Autumn decs, then Halloween, then Thanksgiving, the Christmas. Love it.

Normalserviceissuspended · 15/10/2017 14:19

We have oysters on Christmas day- it is quite common in the Uk as well.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 15/10/2017 14:23

I saw a house with theirs up yesterday. That's definitely too early.
Sunday before Christmas traditionally-usually a mad scramble on Christmas Eve.

wobblywonderwoman · 15/10/2017 14:43

You dont have to do the seafood thing if you and dh don't like them.

Plus you are going to be nearly due and why put yourself under too much pressure.

FixItUpChappie · 15/10/2017 14:55

2 weeks before....I personally think all the super early excitement and decorating ruins the effect of the actual Christmas build up. Am holding the kids off on Halloween decorating until 1 week before for the same reason.

October

Although this year, it will be the second time it's been up, as we put it up in May too. 😁

LadypeneloPee · 16/10/2017 10:01

I don't.

Beginning of December

lottieandmia · 16/10/2017 11:24

Not until at least 15th December otherwise I get sick of it.

lottieandmia · 16/10/2017 11:25

I can’t believe anyone puts them up in October. That’s just weird. What’s the point?

Glumglowworm · 16/10/2017 17:39

I put mine up 1st December

But if you're having family round for a fake Christmas at the end of November I'd definitely have it up for that

73kittycat73 · 17/10/2017 01:33

To all those saying you'd be sick of the decorations by December if you put them up to early - Do you get sick of your normal ornaments and trinklets though out the year? Do you have to change them so you won't be fed up with them? I just don't get the logic. Xmas Confused

Bisquick · 17/10/2017 01:38

I always put the tree up first weekend of December! It's right after our wedding anniversary and since we usually travel long haul to visit family over Christmas it gives us a couple of weeks with our own tree here! :)

But this year I have a planned section mid-December so even more reason to get it up before! I'm so happy to see others put them up "early" too.

lottieandmia · 17/10/2017 09:27

73 - a Christmas tree takes up more room than other ornaments. Cards up all over the place look untidy after a while.
