I know it’s probably been done to death but I’m struggling with what to get for my eldest.

His stocking is more or less sorted and I’ve already got him a new laptop, a couple of tops and new trainers so he needs another main present and another few biggish things.

  • Nice wireless headphones (such as Bose)
  • External monitor (with 3840 x 2160 resolution) so when using the laptop in bedroom, your son can connect laptop and monitor with HDMI cable to have 2 screens Grin

why is a 16 year old having a stocking?

All our family have stockings. DH, me. My DSis and I exchange stockings every year and any grandparents staying over get a stocking too. It's all part of the fun.

millifiori · 08/10/2017 08:42

Those white leather IKEA desk chairs went down well with my DC.

00100001 · 08/10/2017 08:47

allthegoodusernameshavegone

We all still have stockings and advent calendars! Including granny and granddad.

Why wouldn't a 16 yo have a stocking???

tistheseason2bjolly · 08/10/2017 08:55

We all have different Christmas traditions. Christmas seems very individual to each family. There is no right or wrong way of doing it.

At 16 they tell you what they want and you get it. Getting expensive surprise gifts is likely to be a waste of money. Surprise stocking fillers are fine.

Cash is king- always.

Normalserviceissuspended · 08/10/2017 09:33

Mine wouldn't see a chair as a gift. Essential household object.

millifiori · 08/10/2017 09:35

Yes, to be fair, they weren't Christmas presents. They were part of their room redecorating. But DS1 once bought DS2 a chair designed for playing guitar on as his Christmas present and he loves it and uses it a lot, so if it's an extra, not a main present, it might go down well.

ScarlettDarling · 08/10/2017 09:37

I read on the Christmas bargain thread about somebody buying their dc a sprocket. I'd never heard of one but it's a mini printer used for printing out photos from your phone. It looks like great fun. You can get them for about £90 but I got £30 off by opening a "Very" account with a code for £30 off first order if you pay over 3 months. Bargain!

ScarlettDarling · 08/10/2017 09:38

And why on earth wouldn't a 16 year old have a stocking? Confused Do 16 year olds not like little surprises and pressies?

WaxOnFeckOff · 08/10/2017 10:02

Apart from the CPU for their computers my 16and 17 year olds have asked for surprises.

I think it was a Samsung watch OP. It was a couple of years ago and I got it half price in Curries. DS still in bed so I'll check later.

Migraleve · 08/10/2017 10:24

migraleve- its not misery it was a question, we stopped stockings and advent calendars before 16, the kids choice. The little gifts that would go into the stocking - pants, toiletries, chocs etc then became their under tree gifts and we also get them a voucher. They have never been wanting kids so have always focused on it being family time and relaxed

Aww bless you with your non 'wanting' kids and your relaxed family time.

Perhaps if the rest of us were to remove stockings due to age we could enjoy family time too Hmm

Seriously though, what utter shite. If you choose not to give a stocking to a 16yo then that's fine, but don't dress it up as making Christmas more about family than those who do. There is no need to question anybody who does give their teens a stocking either, you are not a better person for doing things differently.

butterfly990 · 08/10/2017 18:09

HP Sproket might be a good match with the laptop.

GrumpyOldBag · 08/10/2017 18:15

Are you a name changer OP?

happy2bhomely · 08/10/2017 18:35

My 16 yr old son will be getting a stocking. It will be mainly filled with food.

He will be getting vouchers under the tree this year. Nando's, cinema, River Island, PSN and JD sports.

He has no idea that we intend to get him a Nintendo switch to share with his 4 younger siblings.

He will also be getting his Christmas eve goodies of new pj's, chocolate coins, candy cane and a nice shower gel. He still gets an advent calendar too!

His only request every year is sausage stuffing and Cadbury animal biscuits. Last year we got him about 15 boxes for £7.50 and it was his favourite present by far.

secondhoneymoon · 10/10/2017 17:20

What people spend on their DCs at Christmas is their own business. Laptop would be the main present in our house too but OP entitled to aske for ideas without unpleasant comments. Not that I have any great ideas - maybe a new laptop bag? Boring I know. What about an experience voucher e.g. paint balling or karting?
Stockings are a big thing in our family, even for adults. OP you said your DS's stocking is done - would you share what you've put in there as teenage boys I find the hardest to sort for stocking fillers (we don't spend a lot) The usual pants, socks, shower gel, deo etc. Will go in there but looking for some fun / different ideas

mommaabear · 10/10/2017 21:37

getting this for my 18 year old as a stocking filler LOL

16 yo ds presents
Serin · 10/10/2017 22:28

Tickets to a gig? or event like motor racing?
Record player
Guitar
Rick and Morty T shirt (If he's into that sort of thing)
Sporty bits (Maybe tennis raquet/gym membership/bike bits)
Cinema pass

SootSprite · 11/10/2017 08:01

Considering this is in the Christmas topic, there are some real bah humbugs on this thread Hmm

OP, i’d Recommend a mooch on Firebox.com. Dd is 16 and notoriously difficult to buy for, but I tend to find her a few fun bits and pieces on there, so might be worth a look?

And, for the bah humbuggers, I’m 44 and I still have a stocking from Father Christmas, we all do ... even the dog and cat!

WeAllHaveWings · 14/10/2017 18:34

ds(13, 14 by Xmas) doesn't have a clue what he wants this year. He's got a reasonably up to date Xbox, phone, TV, paperwhite kindle and doesn't want anything updated or a PS4. Doesn't want a tablet as he uses his phone, doesn't want a laptop as he uses/prefers the family desktop for homework.

We'll get him new footie boots, some branded clothes/trainers, bottle of aftershave, iTunes for music, ms points for a new xbox game of his choice as we have the last couple of years, which will add up, but some of it will be clothes he needs anyway just nicer versions, no other ideas although have suggested a new bike as he has been out on his a lot this year when meeting up with friends to play footie and it is too small for him, but he says its fine and will do.

He did ask for a mini fridge for his room but I know he wouldn't use it and the hum would probably annoy him.

OrgyofSausages · 14/10/2017 21:50

My dc like their stockings more than anything else!

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 14/10/2017 22:23

The laptop would be the main peesent here as well. But then all my dc older now and understand that things cost money and we spend equally. So while one might get ten presents and the other three. The same amount of £ has been spent.

Having said all that ds2 is almost 16 and really intocothing so would appreciate something that would not normally be in budget. So more expensive trainers than normal or a 'designer' sweatshirt or jeans.

He's love an Apple Watch oh and to not share a bedroom with his brother but that's not going to happen.

Mostly though he saving to buy a scooter, helmet, insurance and a cbt test as well as provisional and theory tests.

Normalserviceissuspended · 14/10/2017 22:25

He has no idea that we intend to get him a Nintendo switch to share with his 4 younger sibling

Not really for him then?

wannabestressfree · 14/10/2017 23:10

The switches are more family activities... you can play Mario kart and do lots of tasks together. It’s fun to play.
If you are with us Christmas then you get a stocking. I pick up things all year round as can end up doing anything up to 15.
