Please help- kids tablets. Clueless mum.

Does anybody know what is a good tablet for a 5 year old. I haven't got an iPad budget. Looking at about £100. Please give me some recommendations along with a bit of info. I'm not very good with this type of thing.
Will mainly be used for watching programmes on YouTube or something like Netflix or Sky go. He's not really into games yet.

Some of the cheaper end Windows tablets are not very robust despite what the makers claim. I would probably investigate a refurbished iPad mini. You should be able to get one for around that budget.

My 5yo has a kindle fire, she's had it a year and loves it, we got it from Argos for around £80
We also brought a rubber cover for it which was about £15

Thank so. I looked at the fire kids. Seems ok. I've had cheaper ones (£50) when my oldest was little, they were rubbish!

Im not sure, we have been looking at the Kindle Fire lately. It seems o.k for that age maybe?

I agree with fleagle either look around refurbished/second hand ipad mini or kindle fire.
2nd gen ipad should be cheaper than that and are still good.

Parental controls on the kindle fire are brilliant. My dcs have the cheap one and they are still working fine after many drops

We have an iPad and a kindle fire dd (7) has access to - she massively prefers the kindle for books and films but the iPad for looking up homework stuff and for the various homework apps the teachers send home. She doesn't play games though beyond jelly splash and fruit ninja so not sure which would be better if yours is a minecraft nut.

Another kindle fire fan. The kids version is the identical basic/ introductory level tablet plus a drop proof case and one year free subscription to loads of kids books, games and tv programs. The tv needs wifi but the rest downloads. All add free and no extra in-app purchases. You will want an extra memory card.

Kindle fire here. She loves it. Moans occassionally that she can't get some of the aps they use on the ipads at school but gets over it.

We didn't get the kids version but she's the only one who ises it and it's got various passwords to stop her going on the wifi by accident etc.

Sorry, should add that she spends most of her time playing minecraft on it. :/

My kids got Leapfrog Epic tablets 2 years ago, I love them. Very robust and kid friendly, you can download free android apps or pay to get advert free versions from Leapfrog. Can put movies on there for plane journeys or they can access Netflix at home. Also has camera, art stuff etc, fun home screen. The kids (9&5 now) love them.

What about an iPod touch? It's not as expensive as an iPad, it's more portable, you get Apple quality and apps.

Both kids had kindle fires. DS1 who is 8 didnt like his that much. He loves the iPod he has now. Plus he can try the apps they are using in school.

Kindle fire for my 10 years old too. They can downloads hundreds of free stuff and play Minecraft, ROBLUX, musically etc.

My twins have the cheap kindles 29.00 but need more memory now. I am looking at upgrading to the 8 inch slightly bigger screen other lots more memory currently around d 74.00 on Amazon but hanging out for black Fridays deals.

Just to add, both kids smashed their screens and Amazon replaced them free of charge and transfered all their downloads onto the new ones.

We have a kids kindle its great but you can't get YouTube kids which DS loves going on on his grandmas iPad. You could look for an older model refurbed iPad in CEX, Game etc?

Definitely the kindle fire it’s amazing! Just make sure you register it to an email address that has amazon prime

Do you need Amazon prime for the Amazon fires then. Isn't that like a tenner a month? And can you really not get YouTube on them?

It’s better if you have it as there’s loads of extra films that you can download free but it works perfectly well without it too.

My eight year olds have kids kindles,they both have YouTube on them.
You will need to have a adult profile on the kindle and download it to your profile and then share it with them.It sounds complicated but once you get used to it it's fine and it stops them accessing any thing other than the amazon kids stuff unless it's pre-approved by you .

Look at your used items websites. I got a great v tech one all loaded up with stuff when my kids were about 3 and 4. They still use it. Never had to buy a thing for it. Paid about €80.

Don't assume you have to buy new and take on a monthly bill.

Re-conditioned is also an option I'm sure.

Also be careful what you introduce , my dd couldn't careless but my ds is OBSESSED with YouTube

We're he is on a "tech break" at the moment, although they do still get tv at the weekend.

I like our kindle fire but it is a cheap tablet and you can tell - a bit slow and clunky.
Amazon customer service good however, we needed a replacement and got it within a few days.

Also be wary, the kids version is just the normal version with the kids subscription on it. You don’t need this if you don’t want it, can still get all the same parental controls etc on the normal one and you can customise your own content depending on need

You can get you tube and you don't need prime on Kindles. I am based in Sweden and we can download all the apps. My kids can also watch things on our Netflix account. We haven't got the kids, just the normal ones but we have still put in kid controls.

The EE Robin tablet is pretty good, has a good screen, comes with a nice sturdy rubber case too

Fire kids owner here. DSD loves it. I'm sure there's a years free subscription to kindle kids or something isn't there?

Can you still get the Tesco Hudl? They used to be fantastic back in the day.
