Just that really. Notoriously difficult to buy for but he has actually now got a hobby (sailing), but don't know what to get him. Thanks

I'm getting my friend a "dry bag" for her travelling trip there's a good make called Overboard which is a sailing make & you can get cases for phones, iPads & stuff too as well as different size bags, they are 100% waterproof. They are also good for holidays too for just taking stuff to the beach or on a boat trip for shoving stuff in that you know you want to keep safe from water.

A Book of knots? A nice compass?

iggleypiggly · 02/10/2017 11:52

Or a floating keyring in case they go overboard?

What sort of sailing has he got into? There are lots of things you can buy but it depends a lot on whether it's big boat/dinghy sailing racing/cruising sailing? I am so grateful my Dad loves sailing as I wouldn't have a clue what to get him if he wasn't!

daisydalrymple · 02/10/2017 12:35

For a stocking filler I got a pair of socks off Amazon, one has starboard on it, the other has... well whatever the other side of a boat is Grin I can't remember! They're actually for a teacher who loves sailing, ds1 is giving him one of them and dd the other.

Thanks for ideas. Dinghy sailing, would you call it? Small boats on in land reservoirs. Thanks for great ideas so far!

Haha, sorry OP but a quick plug..you can get him a gift voucher for a sailing experience on the boat my DH skippers (though doesn't own sadly!) , although it's a bit larger than a dinghy! But guests get to join in, pull ropes, raise sails, learn about all the different sails and techniques...the crew (mostly volunteers) are very knowledgable.

My DH started off racing dinghies when he was a child and now he's on a big heritage sailing trawler but the things he learnt on his dinghy stood him in good stead for his sailing career. He swears by a good compass, almanac and a decent pair of sailing boots!

Also a course to complete like Day Skipper would be handy too in case he wants to venture further out and is prepared!

God I wish DH was on MN right now although he'd probably fill your thread with his "dream shopping list" of crap essentials he would love on the boat Grin

Oh! And a VHF radio is essential!!!

Aquafleece - a warm waterproof top, very useful for wearing over the top of hikers/wetsuit.

Hikers - if he is sailing a boat where he needs to put his bum over the side a lot to keep it balanced these are good. They're like a pair of cropped wetsuit trousers with braces and reinforced thighs to protect them when hiking out.

Rash vest - good to wear with hikers or under wetsuit.

Watch - if he is racing then a sailing watch is very useful to time start sequences, they are easy to set up to time the different intervals and have big faces so they're easy to see on the water.

There are an online company called Rooster who sell loads of good sailing kit so you could get a voucher for there.

Depending on what boat he is sailing and whether he owns it there are other bits of kit you can get, but it's hard to advise without knowing what he's sailing!

A sailing knife? I bought one for my DH a year or 2 ago and he was chuffed to bits with it.

Hedgyhoggy · 03/10/2017 22:03

Thanks all what would I do without you?

Between us dc1 and I think:

Gloves! Sailing gloves that is (fingerless) rather than woolly gloves.

Wetsuit boots which go up the ankle a bit if he’s likely to be hiking out.

Winter rash vest (they’re warm and fleecy)

Waterproof camera with buoyancy thing attached (ours is now at the bottom of the Carrick Roads after it fell out of dc2’s pocket in a capsize drill 3 week’s ago)

This is all based on what we use dinghy sailing in wetsuits. Agree with a watch with a huge face and a countdown if he’s racing.

Oh and dc1 says a knot book and some rope was her best Christmas present last year (but she’s well into knots Confused)
