When is it acceptable to decorate???

As a child in the 70's I was told that it was ' incredibly common' to hang your Christmas decorations early.
Our tree went up the weekend before Christmas. Decorations were limited to a tree, a card tree, a wreath on the door and some pieces of wood with real holly stuck into them in an arty way and some mistletoe if there was any for sale that year. School friends had all sorts of foil decorations hanging from the ceiling and lots of glittery things. These were also classed as ' horribly common'
Fast forward 40 years and I decorate how I want to. Everything is incredibly tasteful ( of course) and it takes me three days to do it properly .
But when is it socially acceptable to hang your decs/ put the tree up?
Mother has mellowed somewhat after I had DD and puts her tree up on about the 12th Dec that's if she is not on one of her billion holidays
But she does still consider earlier than that common.
I have ignored her ever since I got my own home in 1988 and done it my way. Since I had DD tree goes up on 1st December because she is as excited every year as I am.
People do seem to put their trees up earlier than they did when I was a kid.
The first weekend of December this year is the 2nd - but we might be going to visit family.
So when should I decorate? Daughter wants to be part of it so it should be on a weekend- is it just horribly horrendous to decorate in November? Am I getting obsessed? Does this mean by the time I'm 65 that as soon as I take the fake cobwebs down from Halloween I will be putting the Christmas tree up?
What do you all do? ( I am Christmas obsessed BTW. I now think,of Christmas a more of a season than a single day event!)

Our dcs (and me Grin ) get super excited, so ours go up 1st Dec or first weekend in Dec. NOT November, no matter how excited. That wouldn't be right Shock Grin

My DH would have Halloween or Xmas decs up year round if he could. Some Halloween stuff went out today, the rest will gradually appear between now and then and of the month. He'll start sneaking out Xmas decorations on 1st November with the full shebang being up by last weekend of November.

I like decorations but would be fine with less and for a shorter time. That being said I couldn't care less about social acceptance in this case. If people don't like it they are welcome to not come to my house.

HeadDreamer · 01/10/2017 22:38

Advent starts 4 Sundays before Christmas. That's when the traditional christmas season starts. Last year it was the last weekend of November! So it isn't wrong just because it is November,

But for me, just do it whenever you like. If you can't do 2/12 then either the weekend before or after would do.

craftsy · 02/10/2017 00:20

I like to have the tree and some decorations up for the first weekend of November as that's when we have our first Christmas party. Then I spend the next few days doing the other rooms inside the house is complete by November 30th. I do porch, front window and garden decorations on the 1st weekend of December. The whole lot take about 8 days to get up right, so I like to know I'm getting a full 5 or 6 weeks out of them.

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 02/10/2017 00:43

1st of Dec - your Mother can think me as common as she likes.

If you have to go away that weekend, then the weekend before obviously.

When I was a child my Aunty used to put those foil ones up across the ceiling in every direction and those foil lanterns & tinsel &&&... it was a colour explosion. She was great fun.

First weekend in December here too although our tree has been really droopy by the end of Christmas the last few years as it’s in our sitting room which is usually quite warm with a wood stove so am wondering whether to do just the tree later this year? May spark a family revolt however....

Fond memories of sparkly foil decs from the ceiling here too...

NoWordForFluffy · 02/10/2017 07:11

I generally do the first weekend in December. Unless the Saturday is 6th, as that’s a bit late for my liking. If that was the case I’d do it on Sunday 30th. Common as muck, me! Xmas Grin

NapQueen · 02/10/2017 07:18

First weekend in December. Only have a tree though.

speakout · 02/10/2017 07:27

Tree is two weeks before christmas, but always a real one. Amy longer and it wouldn't last.

First week in December we make paper snowflakes ( taught by my Norwegian friend) intricate patterns and I stick them to the windows, the shadows cast dancing snowflakes on the walls with the low winter sun. I leave these up until the end of January,

MuddlingThroughLife · 02/10/2017 07:28

Exactly what fluffy said ☺🎅

AuntieStella · 02/10/2017 07:29

I think the earliest irreproachable date is Advent Sunday.

Though ours go up much later (not until after a December birthday)

NoWordForFluffy · 02/10/2017 08:21

Exactly what fluffy said ☺🎅

(not a made up word! 😂).

NotAPuffin · 02/10/2017 09:09

I'll start the first weekend in december, with the front door wreath, stairs garlands, and other bits and pieces around the place. The second weekend we'll put up the artificial tree in the dining room, and the third weekend we'll go and buy the real tree for the sitting room and put it up. We'll be doing the snowflakes thing this year as well, in all the windows; my kids live to make things out of cut up paper so it'll suit them nicely.

NoWordForFluffy · 02/10/2017 09:11

I’ve got lights to wrap round the bannister / handrail and a second tree this year. I’m dying to get going! 🎄🎄🎄

DarkLikeVader · 02/10/2017 09:29

Two weeks before Christmas here - and we still have sparkly foul stuff hanging from our ceiling! But driving through Bath late last night I saw not one but two houses with what looked like Christmas lights (one in the shape of a Christmas tree!) - now that is too early.

DilysMoon · 02/10/2017 09:33

Usually 2nd weekend on Dec as we have am early Dec birthday and wait until after that. Down before NYE usually.

stargirl1701 · 02/10/2017 09:37

We bring the tree in on Christmas Eve and take all the decorations down on Twelfth Night.

DrCoconut · 02/10/2017 09:38

When school breaks up for the holidays is ideal for us. Advent is a separate thing to Christmas and I like to mark it for itself. Then once the tree goes up it stays up until 12th night, the last day of Christmas. It's how it always was and I've stuck to it.

GaryGilmoresEyes · 02/10/2017 09:46

The same date in December every year since I was born, my birthday. 🎄🎁
Then down a few days after our New Year Party.

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 02/10/2017 09:54

Second Saturday in December is when we always do ours. This year that falls on 9th.

MrsMargeSimpson · 02/10/2017 10:06

My birthday is on November 30th so not before then. DD has her birthday a week later but likes the tree to be up, so basically if falls in the first week somewhere for us. This year it’ll probably be 2nd/3rd xx

yorkshireyummymummy · 02/10/2017 10:07

Thank you everybody. It's really interesting to hear what people do. I think I will get my bannisters done first. I've got a galleried landing and you can see all the way to the top of the house. Last year I did halfway, this year I'm going all the way! Greenery ( fake natch!) wrapped wound the bannisters, then lights, then a beautiful decoration hung from the greenery between each spindle. It looked glorious last year I cried when I took it down and this year will look even better! My poor hubby just does not ' get it' although he tries really hard.

Anything earlier than Dec is too soon for us. I like to put it all up mid Dec or it starts to annoy me!

TheFaerieQueene · 02/10/2017 10:11

The weekend before Christmas. Any earlier and they lose their sparkle by the big day.

drspouse · 02/10/2017 11:15

Advent starts 4 Sundays before Christmas. That's when the traditional christmas season starts.

BZZZ incorrect.
Christmas starts on the 25th December and continues till the 6th Jan (unless you are Catholic, in which case it's 2nd Feb).
Advent is a different season.

I allow DH to put up Christmas cards in Advent and then the tree comes inside about a week before Christmas (it doesn't like warm houses - tree in a pot).
Decorations on the 24th (though I may concede "first day DH has with DS off school" if that's less than a week before Christmas which it will be). Wrapping for non-posted presents also on the 24th (hopefully after the DC are asleep) meaning that presents magically appear (all of them, not just Santa presents) under the tree overnight. And preventing small DC opening present accidents.

Tree stays up till 6th Jan (meaning DS has a Birthday Tree with his birthday presents put out under it, as it's before then).
