My dd's don't want anything for Christmas

My dd's don't really need anything or particularly want anything. They are almost 12 and 14, neither are girly, both have ASD, not into clothes, they have tablets, dd1 has a old iPhone (doesn't want a upgrade). Dd1 could possibly do with a new 3ds or 2ds as hers isn't holding battery but I'm not really keen on buying more electrical gadgets/consoles. Dd1 doesn't really have any hobbies other than drawing but she has loads of art stuff (people buy it for her every year), dd2's hobbies are all summer activities such as bodyboarding and kayaking, she hasn't asked for anything Sad.

Totally stuck for ideas.

Could you get them done sort of ‘experience?’ Annual pass for something or similar?

Lovemusic33 · 30/09/2017 15:03

It's hard as I can't take them out individually and both are into different things, dd2 has more severe ASD but loves activities, her sister has mobility issues so struggles with a lot of things. They don't like theme parks or anywhere too busy. Dd2 also likes presents to open. I'm not planning on spending much but would rather buy them something they will use and like. I am wondering if the Amazon echo would be any good? What does it actually do?

I use my dot for listening to audio books and the radio.

kimlo · 30/09/2017 15:08

and I say good morning to it each day and it gives me a fact about the day.

teaandtoast · 30/09/2017 15:10

Why not get Dd1 a 3DS? Confused Especially as you're so stuck for ideas...

Lovemusic33 · 30/09/2017 15:25

tea I think dd1 will end up with a ds, she wants the new Pokemon game so I will wait and see if there's a offer/bundle nearer Christmas. Dd1 likes to read but I'm struggling to find her new books, she likes fantasy (hunger games etc..).

Dd2 is the tough one, I'm wondering in the Amazon dot or echo could help her with communication skills? Because she can talk to it and ask questions? Does it also play music?

If she likes hunger games, there's loooooooads of YA fiction to get her. Go to a bookshop and ask for recommendations :)

IgnoreMeEveryOtherReindeerDoes · 30/09/2017 17:08

For DD1 have a look at some of books by

  • Author Cassandra Clare
  • Lauren Kate
  • Garcia Stohl
  • P.C and Kristin Cast

Check the suitable for age. Not my kind of books but some of book series my DD has along with hunger games, vampire dairies and loads of others not mills & booms type.

teaandtoast · 30/09/2017 17:13

Ah.
Land of Elyon books, by Patricia Carman for Dd1?

SleepFreeZone · 30/09/2017 17:20

Do you think they might enjoy doing some charitable, ie giving a gift to someone less fortunate than themselves or maybe adopting an animal?

SunshineHQ · 30/09/2017 17:24

Would they like something sensory? Sounds random, but DS11 (Aspergers) favourite birthday present last month was a Next fleece blanket, which he adores the feel of.

Books, toys, all completely untouched.

Jasminedes · 30/09/2017 17:34

Yes, if you ask the dot to play chart music, it plays a 'radio station' of chart music (no talking or ads though, just music I think). Obvs you can ask for whatever type of music you like. Dd gets it to play rain sounds sometimes. And you can get it to be an alarm, to add things to a reminder list or shopping list (which you can also see or add to on an app).

Lovemusic33 · 30/09/2017 17:35

Thank you, will look at books.

We do give to charity and have done adopt a animal, dd1 likes penguins so we adopted one for her birthday.

sunshine dd2 loves sensory things and fidget toys but I'm finding it hard to find things she can't pick apart (we have got through many fidget spinners), she likes slime and putty but it needs to be one she can't make a mess with or eat. Dd1 loves fluffy blankets but has a few already, she's obsessed with soft toys but I refuse to buy anymore.

I'm hoping the dot will be on offer for Black Friday so will hold out till then, I think both dd's would like one.

If your DD is into activities such as bodyboarding and kayaking in summer, maybe she'd enjoy some sort of winter activity eg a session at somewhere like ChillFactore or a dry ski slope?

Loopytiles · 30/09/2017 19:37

Specialist clothes or accessories for DD2's summer activities?

Credits for them to buy apps or music?

SunshineHQ · 01/10/2017 22:39

This has been really popular in our house. Glorious sensory toy - even I find myself playing with it once the kids have gone to bed.

You need to buy a cheap cat litter tray to go with it.

Also, would a furry hot water bottle be an option?

Caenea · 03/10/2017 09:30

Would kinetic sand work, OP? Perhaps not if she has a tendancy to eat things, but it's not messy at all and is really good!

There's those metal things too - you can press them and the pins move to take the shape of your hand/knee/face/whatever. this is what I mean

Bornfreebutinbiscuits · 03/10/2017 09:43

x box? ps4?

i know your not keen on tech but it seems your dd have limitations? maybe they would like one. we have x box got it last year and its great through winter and they are not on it all the time at all, the odd hour here and there.

or what about the echo or the dot - amazon? could be alot of fun for them and people have said it can even help with homework?

Bornfreebutinbiscuits · 03/10/2017 09:43

also with games console they can play togther and it has fab things like minecraft.

Lovemusic33 · 03/10/2017 10:25

Ok, dd2 has now decided she wants the 'lol dolls big surprise' thingy. It seems it's one of the top toys and is out of stock or hugely overpriced everywhere. She loves watching YouTube videos of unboxings and love collecting things (was collecting shopkins) so she's quite excited about the LOL dolls big surprise. Seems like a huge amount of money for a few dolly that are hiding in bath bomb type things? Hmm

Do they like making slime? If so, a vat of borax will probably suffice.

Lovemusic33 · 03/10/2017 10:30

Yes, I have been looking at slime, I just worry about mess. My dd2 loves making a mess (very tactile) and is always getting hold of things from the bathroom and mixing things up in bowls then getting it everywhere ,can slime be un messy?

OP posts:
Yvetteballs · 03/10/2017 10:32

DD is slime mad. I only allow her to make slime in the shed(dolls house type one) because I hate the mess. She makes it in the shed but keeps it in tubs in her room.
