Completely stumped for 1 year old

His birthday at Christmas time too, he turns 1. I can't think of anything except maybe a trike? With two older sisters I can't think of anything we haven't got. Should I just get a couple of new books and clothes and save money until he needs something maybe?

I've got one turning 1 just before Christmas. There's an ELC Wooden trike on mothercare website that was £45 on sale for £30. I've bought that for his birthday, am stumped for Christmas. Possibly cosy coupe (to live at my Mams house!)

Clothes and books perfect idea.

Shemozzle · 28/09/2017 23:48

Oh that ELC trike looks so cute. We already have a Wheelybug ride on though. And a scuttlebug. And a retro metal trike for older kids which is unused and in the way so I think OH would kill me at the suggestion of another smaller one to trip over!

The first idea was the best - clothes and books and save the money till he needs something. Who wants more stuff cluttering up their house for the sake of it when DC aren't really old enough to know the difference. Mine was chuffed to bits with books for the first 3 or 4 Christmases.

SuseB · 29/09/2017 09:36

Our DC3 actually got some of their older siblings' outgrown toys (nice ones, in reasonable condition!) wrapped up for Xmas when they were 1 - I'd put them aside for a few months beforehand so they seemed 'new'. Agree pointless to buy stuff if you've already got it! One thing we bought new was a silver space blanket (survival type thing from a camping shop, what they put round you when you finish a marathon) for about £2; we didn't have one already and it was loved by all children for ages after! Got the idea from Baby Sensory class.

I think at this point you are really only buying stuff so that th older siblings don't think it's odd that their baby brother didn't get a visit from the guy in the red jacket.

Clothes and books are fine, maybe bubble bath or stuff that is disposable such as bath crayons/rubber duck etc. or as PP said, wrap up some things that might have been put away that other DC may have forgotten about. I think you just want his "pile" to look similar but I wouldn't spend much.

A box of balloons if you want a big 'thing'

I've got a cute stacking toy, some more interesting wooden blocks, a Noah's Ark, some books and clothes, a wooden teether, and a Tessel playmat

A great toy for a one year old is a sturdy wooden trolley with a tall handle that they can use for balance. They love the trolley to cart stuff around; dolls, teddy bears, blocks etc. Often the trolley will come with wooden blocks so it is two toys in one.

Our no. 3 was a boy born close to Xmas after 2 sisters. Agree he doesn't need things but you don't want his sisters saying he got nothing and did Santa think he had been naughty.

That year his main gift was a Thomas the Tank sit and ride train (only £10 in a Smyth's sale but looked a "big toy") as the sit n ride the girls had had was pink/well used. We also got things like a chunky car/train, new bath toys, cutlery set, water bottle, "boy pattern" plate/bowl set, a small backpack (for bits on a day out), a new ball. Lift the flap books - more dinosaur and emergency services things.

You should only have the problem this year as by the next Xmas/2nd Birthday my son's Fireman Sam obsession had arrived so next year he may have his own specific interests ......

What about one of the "traditional" Fisher Price toys that they've re-issued? I remember some of them from my own childhood...

The telephone

The TV

The record player
