Me again!! DN and her partner (both 25) have bought their first house together (expecting engagement soon). So this is first year of joint present and we have a limit of £20 as an agreed family budget.
Had thought of a restaurant voucher but £20 won't get them far!
Other thought was something Christmassy for the house but people's tastes vary enormously!
Next idea was a Christmas cook book like Nigella etc as they are hosting Christmas for the first time.
Or a personalised bauble for the tree with their names in it.
They live hundreds of miles away and I will see family in Oct to hand over presents so am trying to thing Christmassy thoughts even though I'm not yet in full on Christmas mode!!

Bottle of champagne to toast their first Christmas in their new home.

You should get an offer in the run up for about £20.

JigglyTuff · 10/09/2017 20:42

I think a Christmas cookbook or dressing a house for christmas on a budget book or something would be a lovely gift

SingaporeSlinky · 10/09/2017 20:44

Christmas cook book is a good idea, but will be too late to be much use to them, assuming they open it on Christmas morning. They won't have time to read it. May be useful for subsequent years though. I'd go with a few tasteful tree ornaments to help build up a collection.

MrsHathaway · 10/09/2017 20:45

I was going to say Christmas decorations but I take your point about personal taste. Perhaps you could think about the dressed Christmas table - something like a runner or placemats or chargers. Obviously ask first re scheme and colours.

Tbh £20 for a joint present isn't going to go far so I'd think more along the lines of a nice bottle of spirits. Last year we gave Edinburgh rhubarb gin and Jim Beam Red Stag to adults in a similar situation. The bottles are quite decorative in their own right and then the contents are welcome at festive times!

Makemineacabsauv · 10/09/2017 21:38

Thanks everyone! They don't drink spirits - she drinks prosecco/wine and he drinks beer. Last year I got her prosecco and pops balls which she loved.
Yes I'll try and find out about how they're planning to decorate for Christmas but it might be a bit early as I've got to get all the stuff done for Oct!

A nice smelly candle might be nice. Yankee have various Christmassy scents and really add to the festive atmosphere imo. And it's a perishable gift so not a problem if it doesn't fit with their taste.

But in saying that, mil gave me one of the lampshade type covers for the Yankee jars on our first Christmas and I love taking it out each year.

A dash of Edinburgh rhubarb gin in prosecco is lovely!

It might be a bit late for a Christmas cookbook, but a nice cookbook generally is useful to have.

Some wine glasses (you can never have too many imo) or a nice picture frame? Some reed diffuser things? Cheese knives? Cinema voucher?

chanie44 · 12/09/2017 19:17

What about just giving them a voucher? When me and OH bought our home, we would have preferred the money as there was lots of things we needed that we didn't realise and £20 would have been handy.

Alternatively, what about cinema vouchers - again, all our money went on the house, so we didn't have much spare money to go out with.

My mother in law bought my daughters Georg Jensen decorations from their birth year for Christmas that year, they make a lovely keepsake. You can get some in the 2017 range for under £20 though if you can stretch to maybe £25 you could get a slightly bigger one.

My parents are hard to buy for but DM loves all things Christmas so I'm toying with the idea of a set for them this year in gold, marking their 50th wedding anniversary in December.

A Christmas cookbook would be a nice idea or a hamper. Don't know if you do Christmas cards but the card factory have a first Christmas in your new home card

Makemineacabsauv · 12/09/2017 20:45

Brilliant ideas thanks! Think I might go for the cookbook in case we fly and can't take bottles etc. She's fussy about candles too so Nigella might save the day!

DD1 lives in NY but comes home every Christmas & brings a special (dated) bauble from Macy's each time, which is lovely Smile

So whatever else you give them, a fancy bauble with the year on would be a fab memento!

LapdanceShoeshine · 12/09/2017 20:57

not on the high street have lots of personalised ones

LapdanceShoeshine · 12/09/2017 21:01

specifically new home decorations Smile

Star2015 · 12/09/2017 21:55

How about a cinema voucher? If they are buying their first home together they may not have much disposable income for treats like cinema? I'd have appreciated a gift like this in their situation.

Theimpossiblegirl · 12/09/2017 22:11

How about a set of nice glasses. tkmaxx is good for decent glassware at a good price. You could get a bottle of fizz to go with them if you find a cheap enough set.

mummmy2017 · 12/09/2017 22:20

If you want to do the Book...go to Book depository, free postage and cheap.. so you could just send it 1st Dec as an early gift.
I think I would love to have one arrive before the event so I could use it.
and you could send an apron, his and hers for the gift.

Makemineacabsauv · 13/09/2017 19:45

That's a good idea, I think I will send it to them as an advent present!
Some lovely decorations there! Am tempted...
They got loads of glasses when they bought the house so don't need any more but thanks for the idea!
