Xmas Advent Clues

In the run up to christmas we do an advent treasure hunt. In their advent calendar they get a clue, leads to a small gift...stocking filler type of gift, sweets, lip balm that type of thing. Its become a tradition, dd 8 is easy but stuck for ds age 11...any ideas? Also...anyone fancy helping with clues? Gifts are left round the house and clues are short...3-4 lines...think this is the 8th or 9th year of doing this and im totally out of clue ideas😀. You can imagine by xmas eve I am completely stumped so ideally want to get clues typed up and gifts sorted to avoid stress (and dismal clues)...

Sounds great fun!
not sure if you do this already but maybe just change how you present the clues to save yourself from having to think up new clues for hiding place. Maybe anagrams/ wordsearch etc.
Scrabble tiles hidden in sand or in a room/area that once found would spell out hiding place... sorry, no experience of 11 year old boys yet!

can't you recycle ones from a few years ago?

singadream · 08/09/2017 21:57

ps love this idea

Isadora2007 · 08/09/2017 22:11

I do these every Easter!

Mostly doggerel rhymes like

To find the next clue wander through to where the guinea pigs like to poo!
(Which is a specific corner of the conservatory! Lol)

Is that the type of clue you want? If so, do you also want suggestion of places?

For the 11 year old you could have some foreign words or some simple maths in amongst the clues?

RoseHarper · 09/09/2017 09:34

Brilliant - thank you. Anagrams are a brilliant idea now they are a bit older. Maths and foreign words also brilliant. We start of full of enthusiasm on the 1st Dec and by the 24th Im practically writing "it's in the fridge". The kids love it and would be disappointed if we didnt do it. We do recycle clues a lot mainly as we are usually writing them late at night last minute, kind of why i want to get ahead and put a bit more thought into it this year. Some great ideas - keeo them comingSmile

Isadora2007 - thats exactly the type of clue we normally do...needs to be short as they search before school...items could be hidden anywhere in the house...types of places are usually in a shoe, in the toybox, that type of thing. I spend around £1 per item...mix of sweets/treat type foods i.e. fancy hot chocolate, small crafty bits - sometimes an activity type thing.

Can I just say my mum still does this for us and my siblings are 30, 27 and 22 and we all love it! Again my mum uses personal memories and stuff for our clues

RoseHarper · 10/09/2017 10:37

Thanks both, some brilliant ideas. DS 11 I am sure knows its not the elves but think Dd 8 still believes? We dont do stockings for them so this spreads out present giving for the weeks leading up...tbh tho...lovely as it is it wears thin half way through December for me and DH, a few times have woken up through the night remembering we hadnt set out the clue!
