Posh make up advent calendar

I know it's early but dd is desperate for a good quality make up advent cake dat and I am bracing myself for how much it will cost. She knows it will be part of her main present but although she's lived Superdrug make up advents in the past she is pretty serious about make up now. Only 14 but been on courses and wants a career in it. Anyway the dreaded words (for a skint single mum) have been uttered: Benefit and Mac!! Eek! Any advice or recommendations for good quality make up advent calendars please? I grudge paying out so much when she has no say over what we're buying but know she loves the wee surprise every morning! Luckily DS just wants a £1.50 cadburys one!

I think Liberty's did a nice one last year.

All the tweens seem to love the vapid youtuber Tanya burr who does advent calendars of her makeup and I imagine is cheaper than Benefit etc so could be worth a look.

The NYX one will be much cheaper than the benefit one and also will be much coveted.

Not an advent calendar, but, look at Morphe eye shadow palettes on Cult Beauty or Beauty Bay. My DD is older & takes her make up very seriously, think Anastasia & Nars. They are fairly reasonable but highly regarded. You make get extra brownie points for getting a "cult" beauty product

I've been looking at the sleek make up one and am hoping for it myself. It looks really good value for money and sleek do great products imo.
Benefit do a 12 day countdown which I think is usually around the £35 mark.
Also nyx are bringing out a lipstick one and bare minerals are also doing a make up one. The rest tend to be skincare and make up combined but lean more on the skincare side. There's a run down on all the ones available for this year on get the gloss. There's pictures of what's inside with the sizes as well so worth a look.

Hope that link works, I had the revolution one last year... wasn't that great IMO

christmasunicorn · 08/09/2017 07:04

I had the benefit one last year and it really wasn't worth the money imo. Mac don't do them either Sad (I would love one too!)
The problem is many of the advent calendars are very skin care based as opposed to make up. The bareminerals one would probably be best for your dd. High end but suitable for teenage skin and make up. More expensive then the sleek one but last year qvc sold it and you could pay in 3 instalments, which might help if money is tight

I had the Benefit one last year and the year before, and to be honest it wasn't that great. All mini items and a few pointless days (a hairband in one, for example)

I think the NYX one will be better, but I doubt I'll be getting it due to the fact it's probably going to sell out in an hour or so.

There's a thread over in Style & Beauty about advent calendars:

Might be a bit late now but I found the benefit advent calendar absolutely rubbish one year. Half of it was bulked out with paper clips and hair ties - rubbish for the price! A friend had the sleek one and wasn't in love with it either. If you're buying her any make up for the day itself a lot of places do free gifts with little miniatures in on the run up to Christmas. You could always buy a wooden re-usable calendar and fill it with miniatures from these? And Lancôme is a great one for chucking a few testers in the bottom of the bag if you ask nicely and you're buying something anyway. That way you'll only need to get hold of 10-15 miniatures and fill the rest with chocolates or cheap toiletries you know she'd have needed anyway. Probably won't cost as much as an advent calendar and you could tailor it to things you know she'll like.

Fab idea thank you!! What a fab idea, she will love that!! DS will probably want a gaming. Weapon so I'll end up with nothing to buy for Xmas day!
