I loathe the idea of thinking about Christmas in September but do like the idea of clearing out the house and having a goal to do so by so I will join you! Have a houseful every Christmas and get into such a state in the couple of weeks leading up to it, would be really nice to be calm and collected two hopes

I want to go find a noose. . . .

NotAPuffin · 07/09/2017 14:26

Lovely : ) I'm going to do the Holiday Grand Plan, which means I'm a week behind. Thankfully our front porch area is tiny and will only take 20 minutes, and most of the other stuff on the list for last week doesn't apply to me, or is menu planning, which I leave till November.

BroomstickOfLove · 07/09/2017 17:42

Two different friends have offered me lifts to the dump next week, so if I sort through my stuff, I can get rid of all the things that were too big to carry there and which have been lurking for years. I am very excited about this.

I'd really like to switch from paper filing to digital filing but I don't know where to begin. Anyone know any good apps for this? Or have a system?
Are there particular documents i need as originals and shouldn't scan?
I definitely think it would be a vast improvement on my current system where I pile papers to file later until they collapse under their own weight.

Wondermoomin · 07/09/2017 21:32

Annwithnoe that's a great idea, shall watch with interest for responses. I find paperwork doubly hard to deal with because I've got business and personal/family stuff piled up. I know I'm not alone in that but I always imagine everyone else to have it all in order!

Has anyone actually done the family values thing? It seems a bit... wanky. I think I'll have to take the bits that are useful to me and leave the other wanky bits. 😉

Heading to the dump/recycling centre this morning with a car load of crap. And hoping that the local charity shops will relieve me of another carload of slightly less crappy crap this afternoon and that I don't go and buy a carload of crap to replace it while I'm in said charity shops
Downstairs is coming together now, and I think I might try and see if I could get a painter in this side of Christmas because now that I've decluttered I can actually see the walls and I'm not sure it's an improvement Shock

Still avoiding filing the paperwork though Grin

Ann I don't have any advice for digital filing but for paper filing I use a MN tip.
Get a lever arch file and file things in the order they come in. So when stuff arrives either bin it or just file it. Don't sort just file. Then label file house stuff Sept 2017 to xx. When it gets full, start another.

It's surpringly easy to find your council tax or car insurance or last telephone bill. It's all in the file. In the order it arrived.

I used to use a pocket file system but it got full and took too long to sort and file stuff. This is quick.

We're moving & I'm looking forward to our first Christmas in the new house. It's smaller so not so much to do & there's no dining room so we'll all be in together, cooking or eating or both. Just hope I can find all the bits I've squirrelled away when we move!

BroomstickOfLove · 09/09/2017 07:06

We use a system of A4 envelopes on a bookcase. Each envelope is labelled and every time.you use one of the envelopes you move it to the start of the row, so that the most frequently used files are easier to find.
