We have 8 nieces and nephews. DH has 3 siblings, I have 1. We both have 1 grandparent, parents and multiple aunts and uncles. That's before you get to the people we actually like. Fuck that.

Xmas costs us about £100 in food and £50 in gifts (stocking for DD, secret santa for my family). I just can't bring myself to get more involved than that. It's bloody ridiculous.

6 nieces and nephews £25 each
Godson £15
Auntie 1 £15
Auntie 2 £5
Mum £30
MIL £10

I spend between 20-25 on my parents , sister , sister , bil and niece . All my exs neices and nephews I spend around 7.50-10 each (there are loads of them ).

We spend £25 per parent, siblings & their husbands, and nephews. This was upped from £20 last year.

I spend £10 each on a friends 2 kids (will do it up to 18).

We do a secret santa on my mum's family side, for those who wish to do it. My mum set it up a couple of years ago, first year we didn't join in, but last year my daughter did. My dh has mentioned maybe joining in too this year. I think the going rate is £20.

Over the years, our 'buying for' list has reduced due to grandparents dying, I also stopped buying for an old school friend & her partner (a joint decision) as we were basically just posting the same old chocolates, biscuits, toiletries, alcohol, etc, to each other! The same got decided in January with an uncle & girlfriend on my dad's side.

So we're down to 4 parents, 2 sisters, 2 bill's, 3 nephews & friends 2 kids.

We buy for my daughter, spending £200 - £300. Me & dh have sometimes bought for each other, but have also not bothered some years.

We only buy for 2 DNs and our parents. £25-30 for parents (joint gifts usually) and DNs get 2 for £15/20 toys from Argos. Suits us Smile

dh family - as little as possible, small stuff. very hard to buy for them.

They are not gracious gift receivers so its taken any joy out for me, fuck them.

most of our budget goes on our dc who no one else spoils....ie no aunts make effort or even put a fiver in a card! nothing so we spoil them...and thats were our money goes...

Tentomidnight · 03/09/2017 19:42

£30 each for our parents, siblings and their partners. £20 each for nephews/nieces.
Though I often add a few little extras on for my family members

Wayfarersonbaby · 04/09/2017 10:37

Normally £30-40 each for parents, £10-20 for siblings & partners (normally just some wine and chocs or similar), then about £30 each on nieces and nephews. We don't have many family members to buy for, so normally can do all family for about £160-200 or less. Aside from parents, siblings and niblings I only buy for a couple of old family friends (about £6 token gift, usually a book); our lovely next door neighbour (chocs), and a few tiny gifts for friends' small children - not expensive though as I stock up on Christmas books from The Works 10 for £10 sales and add some chocolate or a tree decoration.

The bulk of our spending is on DD - normally £20-25 for the stocking, plus about £120 for presents from FC and us - including things she needs like a new dressing gown. DH and I normally get each other a token thing or some perfume or similar.

I bargain-hunt and get some things on offer, or on Boots points/Nectar/giftcards (I start early, including in the previous January sales!), and I regift nice things I get too that I don't need (sounds terrible but nice things really - e.g., gift bottles of champagne as I don't drink much!) - so gifts often come in below my budget - I estimate that most Christmasses our total present spend is about £300. My SIL spends that amount just on each of her kids! We couldn't afford that level of spending but are completely happy with our current level and DD seems to still have loads and enjoy it all massively.

Llamacorn · 04/09/2017 10:53

I over-invest in Christmas tbh. There have been times where we couldn't afford a lot and everyone was understanding. Years ago I cut out buying for extended family which has made things a lot easier.

My mum/mil - around £60 - depends if they are after anything in particular tbh.
My dad/fil - around £40
Fils oh - £30
Nephews - £50
Nieces -£30/£40
My bro (no kids) £30/£40

I also get a few token gifts for some people, which are usually less than £20 (think bottle of prosseco/chocs type thing)

I also have 3dc to buy for and my dh. I spend more on dh than anyone, a ridiculous amount to be honest, but it's always for his hobby which is expensive so I try to justify it that way.

Copperspot · 04/09/2017 11:00

We only really buy for immediate family. Aunties / uncles / cousins just tend to do a 'from my family to yours' box of chocs and bottle of champagne, which the adults sort out.

I spend about £100 each on my mum and dad, about £50 each on my brother and sis in law, a fiver on the dog Grin and me and my closest friends, about 10 of us, do a secret santa with a budget of £30 and have a nice meal out to swap gifts.

Friends kids get a token gift, like a small £5 toy, new pjs, craft set, book.

I spend about £450 all in, but christmas is a big thing in our family and i get thoroughly spoilt by my family.

If you broached the topic of cutting back now before people start shopping you might be surprise how many agree with you. I stopped all sibling and nieces and nephews presents years ago and I'm so happy with my decision. I do buy nieces and nephews lovely birthday presents though .
I buy for my mum and dad and leave husband to buy his parents (last Christmas it was a couple of tonnes of coal 😂😂😂) , then I buy my sister who is also my best friend and another good friend and that's it. It's so so lovely to stop spending money on crap and to stop my kids having so much . Means I buy my two really good presents that I know they will use and enjoy.
I watch through the year for presents I know my sister and friend will love and they usually get something similar. Emma bridgewater always goes down well and I've bought discounted bowls that were 50 for 20 before , so really good pressies. This year I bought them both EB candles in the July sale and have ordered a Ness purse for them both . Apart from my parents and my children my shopping is complete 😁

AgnesBrownsCat · 04/09/2017 11:09

I do a secret Santa with colleagues at work and a group of friends always go out for a meal so I'm not a complete Scrooge .

AgnesBrownsCat · 04/09/2017 11:11

Teachers presents are always an Emma Bridgewater mug , I buy the discontinued ones in bulk and keep them in my hotpress 😂

AgnesBrownsCat · 04/09/2017 11:12

Oh my I sound tight !
