Gift ideas to send abroad by post

Can you help me think of ideas for light weight gifts that pack up small to send to the US to an adult couple with no kids.
They are very generous to us so I usually send a care package with a main gift (for her), a hobby gift for him (he's easy) a few smaller gifts, edibles, a Christmas ornament and the obligatory homemade crafts from my kids.

Once the package goes over a certain size the postage explodes so I try to keep it light and compact.

In the last few years I've sent clutch bag, silk scarf, leather gloves, jewellery, passport covers, and posh luggage tags

I'm really struggling to think up new ideas. Her weight fluctuates so clothes are out. She's an avid reader but books are too heavy. And she is very well off with high end taste.

In the past it was easier because I could throw in a few cheap and funky bits and bobs from places like Aldi, primary and Tiger but now all those stores are in the US as well.

I'd really appreciate any ideas you can think of!

Why not order from amazon.com or Wish. They quote in dollars and it would be sent straight there

VivaJen · 02/09/2017 15:55

Tree decorations?

Unicorn81 · 02/09/2017 16:39

Id buy from a us site that will accept your card and tell them to expect a package but notmto open until xmas. I would buy stuff from bath and body works, cracker barrel(food, decorations), jc penny, sephora, victorias secret. Or a voucher for a department store they use?

I have a similar problem with my sisters who live in the States. I usually get them some local English things (they are American). Last year was some lovely Christmas handmade fudge from Mamascookies (Etsy), a Christmas candle from a local candle company and a stained glass ornament from a local lady. This year so far some lovely handmade things from the local Lavender Farm and will look at the markets and early Christmas markets nearer the time. Even if it turns out they don't love the things I sent at least they are different

Are they originally from the U.K.?
My mother and sister are from the uk but now live in Greece. I send them things they liked back home but can't get over there eg certain brands if make up or clothes from a certain shop

We use M&S for my brother in Australia. Free postage!

Jewellrry/ear-rings,
Cath kitson apron/oven gloves/teatowe/bag etc
Paperchase stationery

Just use Amazon or M and S as pp's said. The postage costs a fortune and can be unreliable.

Or check out US websites - barney's etc.

I send English tea, especially flavoured ones to my friends and family.

Tesco clothing delivers overseas. There will be lots of festive clothing available.

We live in the USA, don't send stuff from the UK such a waste of money on postage.

Order from Amazon.com or a similar site and pay for gift wrap. It also means if there's a problem they can change it.

We have a set of relatives that we have not yet been able to persuade to stop sending our kids clothes from the UK. They are always the wrong size or not to the children's taste and it's such a waste of their money. They are very generous but it's very difficult.

If the family are British there are various stores online who will deliver all sorts of lovely traditional British Christmas foods that you can't easily get here.

Annwithnoe · 03/09/2017 22:10

Oh I totally agree that ordering online and having it delivered would be soooo much more sensible, but the kids include homemade gifts and letters and it gives them a sense of connection with these strange faraway people they vaguely remember Smile

Piccolino, your gifts sound wonderful! Wish someone would send me stuff like that Grin

They are both from US, but spent time here as students. I try and put European sweets and chocolates in. Cadburys used to be an obvious choice as the US versions were different, but since they ruined Cadburys here there's no point.

Tea might be good.

Cavendar, I secretly wish they would stop too but it's a bit of a complicated situation.

Thanks for all the great ideas

I think the gift coming from abroad mean something different, even though you can easily get it there online.
Another things I send to my friends and family abroad is calenders with beautiful British scenary.

Annwithnoe · 04/09/2017 13:37

A calendar is a great idea. Thanks.

Material place mats, napkins and napkin rings?

I exchanged gifts with friends abroad for years, but it was becoming so difficult to think if new things, and postage was becoming ridiculous. We agreed that we would buy ourselves something we wouldn't have otherwise bought. We then Whatsapp a photo on Christmas Day. You could do something like that and still send the children's package?

Deb57 · 02/10/2019 09:19

My daughter is in Australia for a year university exchange. She is travelling over Christmas period and would like to send her an advent calendar ( not chocolate one) but one with small gifts she can open each day until Christmas Day. She is a vegan . I'd love to hear any ideas or services which are available. She'll be carrying a back pack so space will be limited.
Thank you

If you're searching for a festive, lightweight gift that's easy to send abroad, consider the Christmas window stickers. These charming decals are not only affordable and flat-packed making international postage a breeze—but also reusable and residue-free, allowing recipients to decorate their windows with holiday cheer year after year.
