Token gift for newborn

OK so my niece and DS are due very close to each other (I won't be surprised if they're born on the same day), and will be newborns at Christmas.

I have an older son and an older niece (who incidentally were due 2 days apart, argh!) so it's not like I don't know that newborns are just lumps who eat and sleep. But I'd like to get both new babies SOMETHING for xmas.

Any ideas gratefully appreciated!

Manhattan toy company toys seem to be baby DS 's favourites. I will be giving those to newborn babies from now on :)

On the bargain thread there was a site that had Christmas bibs. I bought 20 for the amount of new babies around this year, would they work?

My friend had her wee boy just before Christmas last year and I got him a Peter Rabbit 50p from the Royal Mint website! His parents loved it.

It also depends how switched on the 2 year olds are to Santa.

My DS was 5 so totally at the height of the Santa years I couldn't allow doubt into his mind. Baby sex was unknown which made buying difficult and due on 24th just to make it a challenge for Santa.

I like to buy newborns a special book for when they're older. Something like a hardback copy of Peter Pan or A Year of Folk Stories (both on Amazon)

A Christmas decoration is a lovely idea. New bridge silverware do lovely my first Christmas ones . Belleek China ones are also lovely

My ds1 first Christmas he was 3 months old, I got him a few small toys plus wrapped up vests, babygros, wipes, a towel, bubble bath, socks etc. So he has seen photos with his little present pile but it didn't really cost us any extra.

I had ds2 end Nov when ds1 was 4 so we did a stocking with weaning bits (pots & spoons) and few wooden rattles. Then under tree was some toys suitable for the coming year.

Bumping up this post as there's been a couple of people asking!

Our DS2 will be 3-5 weeks old at Christmas but DS1 will be almost 3, so whilst I'd always get a new baby something, we intend on getting him a few bits (stocking and a couple under the tree) for DS1 benefit as he is extremely switched on re christmas!

So far he's got a Christmas outfit, a couple of rattles/little toys , a little comforter type thing (snowdog one that says my first Christmas) and will probably get some bits like dummy / weaning bits.

He will also get a special bear (or similar) for his 'big gift' as that's what we did for DS1 first Christmas (he got a vintage Paddington bear).
