Which Micro scooter - 5yo

Equimum · 20/08/2017 21:20

DS1 will turn five around Christmas time and we are thinking up getting him a bigger scooter (currently has the non-adjustable mini micro, which is getting bit worse for wear).

We love the Micro brand but I have no idea whether to go for the Maxi-micro or the Micro sprite. Does anyone have opinions of which will be best for a confident scooter at five, and have some longevity please?

TIA

Also want to know this.

Can he ride a bike? The balance is trickier with 2 wheels, it is much heavier to carry and much faster. At our school we see some yr1s with them but mainly yr 2 and yr 3, never reception. I find the 3 wheeler much better for my nearly 6 yr old.

RandomMess · 20/08/2017 21:33

How are they on a 2 wheeler?

One of mine was awful so got the Maxi until she was 8/9.

RandomMess · 20/08/2017 21:35

You can ride the sprite home, rather than risk it being stolen at school which is another plus!

shakemysilliesout · 20/08/2017 21:41

Then that's your present sorted too!

I got the sprite for one of my children but the second had the maxi micro and they both got along better with the maxi, but that's just my children, others may have better balance. They both scooted along more confidently with the three wheels. Hope that helps

Thanks everyone, that's very helpful advice. Wondering now if we should wait until next year to upgrade.

I like the idea of riding the Sprite home, but I'm not entirely sure how I'll push the toddler in the buggy (although I do have a sling Grin ).

ATM he can ride his balance bike and is incredibly fast on both that and his scooter. He is just learning on the pedal bike, and will hopefully be there before Christmas.

I would say definitely the sprite. We got dd1 a sprite last year which she had no problem riding. I think at 5 he will soon outgrow a 3 wheel scooter.

Oly5 · 23/08/2017 13:58

My 5yo has the maxi micro and loves it.
We also graduated from the mini micro.
I think he's a few years off two wheels yet

Lowdoorinthewal1 · 23/08/2017 14:05

I would say definitely a Sprite. My DS (tall) went onto his at 3.5 and was absolutely fine on it.

Took him until he was 6 to be able to ride a bike, but was proficient on a 2 wheeled scooter WAY before.

Equimum · 23/08/2017 17:35

Thanks, that's reassuring. I have to say, I am reluctant to pay out for a maxi Micro as I can imagine DS will thing it's babyish within a couple of years. I guess if he does struggle with the Sprite, he can still ride his mini for a while until he perfects it.

I'd go for the Sprite too. DS was fine on his when he outgrew the mini. He's 9 now and the sprite is still going strong - he'd find the maxi a bit babyish now tbh.

Lowdoorinthewal1 · 23/08/2017 18:50

The only think I would say the maxi has in it's favour is that you can tow them on it with the strap. If you were doing a regular school run with it for a young child I can see this might sometimes come into play.

If it's just for recreation, definitely Sprite.

MissRainbowBrite · 23/08/2017 18:59

DD graduated to a Sprite from her Mini Micro for her 5th birthday in February. It took her a month or two to get properly confident on it and she's still not quite as fast as on the micro but is happy enough to do decent distances on it now.
Like you, we went for the Sprite as we didn't know how long she'd use a Maxi for and we thought she might think a 3 wheeler babyish.

Natsku · 23/08/2017 19:02

I'd go for the two wheeler as it probably won't be long before he starts to view a three wheeler as babyish and it shouldn't take long to get the hang of the balance on a two wheeler, DD could ride her two wheeler scooter with ease at 4 before she could ride her bike without stabilisers (actually I think learning to balance on the scooter helped her with learning to balance on her bike)

Equimum · 23/08/2017 20:03

Thanks again everyone.

missrainbow, not being so fast might not be a bad thing. He's a proper little dare devil and gathers incredible speed on his mini micro. Luckily, he will also scoot a good distance.

Very true....DD was scarily fast on her Micro and got to the point where if she was heading downhill she got a proper power wobble on! I think it's prepped her well for a two wheeler though in regards to balance and she'll now glide downhill with both feet on the board.

notasausage · 30/08/2017 20:51

I'd say Sprite too - much cooler at the skate park! Only comment from our experience (Mini Micro and Sprite owners) is that both DD's prefer the 3 wheeler because they can get off and it stands up on their own rather than having to prop it up! DD1 got her sprite when she was about 6 and got the hang of balancing really quickly so I don't think you'll have a problem especially if he can ride a balance bike. DD2 now needing to trade up from her Mini and I think we're getting her a Max.

Logoplanter · 01/09/2017 07:01

I think a lot depends on what their friends have. DS had a micro, got the maxi at 4 as he was too tall and heavy for the micro (which got passed down to DD.) He's still on the maxi at 6 1/2 and shows no signs of wanting a 2 wheeler. A lot of his friends have the maxi as do kids in the older years at school so there is no pressure I guess for a 2 wheeler.

stargirl1701 · 01/09/2017 07:08

DD1 is getting a Sprite next week for her 5th birthday. She has had a 3 wheeled scooter for 2 years and can confidently scoot including leaning to turn corners and braking. She has been able to cycle a pedal bike since she was 4 (Islabike following a balance bike).

We tried out the 2 wheeled scooter at the park by asking a neighbour to borrow theirs. She was slower but could balance. It'll come. She is really motivated to learn the 2 wheeled.
