5 year old boy ideas

Hey there,

I'm genuinely stumped on ideas for my 5 year old son's Christmas present this year. I also have a nearly 3 year old son so they have so many toys already. My nearly 3 year old is getting a big boy bike for Christmas so that is him sorted for the big present but I have no idea what to get my older boy.

I would love any suggestions you can think of.

They already have: bikes, scooter, trampoline, tons of Lego and duplo, car garage, wooden trains, ikea kitchen, play till, instruments, dinosaurs, tons of transport toys, remote controlled toys, marble run, dressing up clothes, soft toys books and jigsaws. They also have an Amazon fire tablet but don't use it frequently as I think they're a bit too young - we use it for travelling and keeping one occupied if the other has a swimming lesson etc.

That sounds like a lot written down - we are expats and tend to have big birthday parties to make up for family parties and they get lots of birthday presents.

Ideas on a postcard please...

My nearly 5 year old (for his birthday, but anyway!) is getting a new bed (mid sleeper to replace toddler bed) - and toy-wise will get him some boards games (his current favourite is kerplunk, so similar sort of things), perhaps a magic set / science experiment kit if i can find one age suitable. What about a proper digital camera? My son is also currently quite liking using a proper magnifying glass, binoculars, and some real walkie talkies (binatone £20 ones but are 'proper' ones) - so some kind of explorers/adventurers kit?

How about a keyboard or something?

linandleo · 07/08/2017 21:41

My son loved hexbugs at that age. There are heaps of different sets you can buy.

Knex was/is a big hit too.

Is he into paw patrol ? Lots of stuff

Otherwise I get you. I have two similar aged boys. Operation, connect four, orchard games (mine love them)

Would he like something like this? build your own den

There's some links to Lego tape over on the bargain thread which might be a nice stocking filler

Depending on the type of marble run you have haba do lots of interesting and exciting extras so you can add to what you already have

If he's outdoorsy would he have any interest in a microscope? There are nice hand held ones that might make a stocking filler, some link to a smart phone so you can take pictures of the nasty things you find. Or you could get a desktop one if you think he has the patience

My younger son got a telescope last year at that age but he was very interested in astronomy.

I've also been thinking of a digital camera for my nearly 5 y o DD who loves borrowing Daddy's camera to take pictures.... I think FC may bring DD a big marble run (we don't have one already), and a box of Lego Classic, but you say you have both....

DD's birthday is close to Xmas, so I was also thinking of an indoor tent/wendy house; some percussion musical instruments but proper ones rather than toys (cymbals/triangle?) DD loves any kind of construction toy so I bought a set of PlayPlax tiles a while ago, but think they have sold out of the current production run (hope they bring them back).

Have you got magna tiles/playmags? Expensive but worth it! Do they like small world play? Sylvanians are good for boys as well as girls....

Wayfarersonbaby · 07/08/2017 23:16

Galt Octons are v similar to Playplax and are still available....

Trying to think of what else I've been squirrelling away for DD - I pick up things throughout the year normally....I have also got a bird house (she loves watching the birds in the garden); a kite; and a Little Live pet (from the Argos sale, but I saw there were some in the John Lewis sale too).

Oh, I know what has gone down well with DD in the past! Last year she loved a build-your-own cardboard castle in a box which is reusable and has been through many hours of play:

There are a house and a theatre in the same range.

Ds(5) has asked for a yo Kai watch, 10 hatchimals, new power rangers ninja steel toys, batman playmobil, and an eevee (Pokemon) toy. Whenever they pick up a catalogue from shops we cut it out for Christmas wish lists.

mmgirish · 08/08/2017 08:34

My goodness, I haven't heard of loads of these things before! Will have to make a list from all your suggestions and get googling.

Thanks so much. I really appreciate your helping. We are home for Christmas this year so I can order things online and get them delivered to my mammy's house.

My ds is five in November and for his birthday he's getting hexbugs and for Christmas a go-kart.

BrucesTooth · 08/08/2017 09:01

Mine is getting some Meccano Junior sets and maybe some more Lego. No idea for the younger one though...

mmgirish · 08/08/2017 09:23

I would love to get him a go cart actually- there was a good one in the bargains thread but we wouldn't be able to bring it back with us.

My nearly 5 yo ds loves imaginext. We got him an amazing (discontinued) imaginext spaceship on eBay last year - it didn't come in a box but he didn't notice or care. He's into imaginext batman right now.
