PS4 or Xbox for 9 year old and when's best to buy?

The day has come when DS has realised his Wii U is a bit old hat and his friends all seem to have a PlayStation or Xbox console. Any suggestions on what's best to buy for a 9 year old? I have no idea of the difference between them! At the moment he likes playing skylanders, minecraft and lego dimensions.

Are there likely to be good deals to hold out for nearer Christmas.
(And if you come this via active threads, yes I know it's only July 😀)

Ps4 is on DS's list too.. marking my spot 🙂 Maplin £220 at the mo.

It really depends what his mates have as then they can bring games and controllers to each other's house etc

burntoutmum · 22/07/2017 21:24

I got a PS4 in the Black Friday sales a couple of years ago, so may be worth waiting until then

DS1 prefers PS4 to Xbox, although I think there may be a few more young child friendly games on the Xbox?

Also, may be worth finding out which his friends have? As you can join up and play together if you are using the same console type ( and pay extra for the service)

Best deal i've seen was Amazon July prime day PS4, 2 games, 2 controllers £179. I expect it'll be similar deals (or better) prime day in the Autumn.

Not many child friendly games on the Xbox

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 22/07/2017 21:27

Ah, thanks all! There s ms to be a mix at the moment. I think I'll need to keep my ears open to work out if there's a distinct preference or what they're all hoping for Christmas too!

My DS is older (nearly 18) he says a lot depends on what their friends use so they can battle together .

He's after the XBox1X which should be out in Nov (he'll wait till Black Friday and see what offers there are) but he says you need a 4K television for it.

There might be some bargains on ebay/gumtree if you wait till Nov, there will be people selling theirs on.

We're in the same position. 10 year old ds, who does love our wiiU, is now asking for an Xbox. I have no idea which one is best.

I'd get your son to scope out which his friends have console wise. A massive part of gaming is chatting and playing against your friends online, DSS has an Xbox 1, this followed on from his original 360 which he got as his friends all had one so wanted that over PS so he could play with them.
@Solslowmo if he wants an Xbox I'd go for an Xbox one, this is the update one that I'd imagine his friends would have / be getting. It's been out for about 3/4 years now, all th games tend to be released on it.

There are lots of child friendly Xbox games, including minecraft, lego, skylanders, stars wars, tons of racing car games etc

Thanks everyone. One of his friends is getting an Xbox which I think may have started this sudden interest!

I'm a complete novice - does the Xbox one or PS4 come with enough controllers or would I need to buy extra or other accessories.

If there's a new Xbox coming out I guess there's likely to be some good deals around?
Good to know the new Xbox needs a 4K tv - that rules that out!

I feel I need to educate myself about playing online with pals too. How does that work? I'm not overly keen on him playing online with random strangers just yet!

Whatever you do don't leave it in its box til Christmas morning thinking you can just get it out and start playing. There's quite a lot of setting up/downloading etc and the servers get very busy that day. Also you will want to familiarise yourself with how it works.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 23/07/2017 09:35

I won't, thanks!

I think they come with one controller so you need to factor in an extra one. Also look out for a bundle where you can get a couple of games included.
Second the advice to set it up prior to Xmas day. It takes longer than you think.

Placemarking as I need to study this!

shortandsweet1 · 04/08/2017 03:44

CrazyDuchess there are lots of child friendly games for both consoles, and lots that are not child friendly. Lego games are ace and my kids started playing them on the XBox and they are available for PS4 as well. What a stupid comment.

shortandsweet1 · 04/08/2017 03:48

Saying that, I would agree with going for a console that their friends have. Once you master the basics, you can upgrade to a subscription that allows them to play online with their friends. A basic pair of headphones with a built in microphone will let them talk to their friends while they play together. That's the way gaming is now. It's very interactive.
