Already reading this thread on a daily basis! Love you all ! My pandora app on my phone is continuously playing Christmas music 24/7!! Can't wait

HandbagCrazy · 12/03/2017 10:45

Morning 🎄

I have PMT at the mo so have shut myself away and working on Christmas crafts to cheer myself up. I've started working on some Christmas bunting and some fingerless gloves for my best friend (although it's going to be interrupted by making hulk gloves for my nephew for Easter).

My savings tin isn't doing so well. It's my first year using one as I usually use a savings scheme through work and I keep forgetting I have it. Will have to do better I think!

HungryHorace · 12/03/2017 11:23

My aim is to get as many Nectar points as possible rather than saving cash. We had about £135 last year in points and we are up to almost £60 at the moment. I also need to buy less this year as I had far too much food last year, so my points should be more wisely-spent!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/03/2017 11:30

WRT Nectar Points, I use all the extra points coupons ( the ones they send out are specific to things you buy rather than the random ones from the till)
Sainsburys went really tightfisted last year and halved the points .

They do the Points Boost where you spend £100 a week for 5 weeks and get something like £35 worth of points (which only works if you were going to spend the £100 anyway)

HungryHorace · 12/03/2017 13:12

I've not had the points boost with them. What I do get is monthly offers where they either double your points for 9 shops then give you 100 points on your 10th or they give 10, 20, 30 etc points up to 100 on your 10th shop.

I'm also signed up to their 'My Coupons' offers and generally get at least double points every week on my shop. I average about 75p - £1 extra per week with that.

And...delivery pass customers had double points on every delivery for 2.5 months too, which has just ended.

I've actually done better since I wised up to all of the points offers than when they paid double for the shopping!

Hello! I think I've just found my people Grin

We're trying to spend the minimum this year (in general not just Christmas) so we can save to take the DC to Disneyland Paris next year. So I've started making lists for family and I'm trying to make as many gifts myself as I can. I'm starting with a picnic set for my niece - this what I've done so far, but I still have other bits of fruit/cakes/biscuits to go plus I'm going to make a patchwork picnic basket out of scraps of fabric I have. I just need to have a hunt in charity shops for a basket to put it all in.

That is so sweet travelmad. Your DC will love DLP. I'm on the lookout for Harry Potter Play tickets for my DDs for their main present. I'm obsessively checking the website for returns and I've signed up for alerts for when the next block of tickets are released.

blacksmiths09 · 12/03/2017 15:22

This year I've set-up a savings account where we put money away each month.

I've just bought our tickets for the Christmas Panto at Billingham Forum Theatre. We have been every year for the past 10 years and it's now a firm family tradition. I look forward to it more than the kids though.

Because we (the parents) are Christmas MAD I fear sometimes our kids take it if granted and never seem as excited as I hope?

HandbagCrazy · 12/03/2017 16:54

Travel they're really good!
I'm doing something similar - am making lots of homemade gifts this year, which will be a mix of crochet, cooked and knitted (hoping to teach myself this year).

It's not necessarily a money thing, I don't enjoy buying generic presents for people who have already lots of samey things. Need to be organised though!

I'm feeling randomly festive again today 🎄

Mrsmadevans · 12/03/2017 18:04

73kittycat73 · 12/03/2017 19:22

Wow, travelmad, they're really good, they look professional! Smile

I did have a plan to put aside some money monthly for Christmas but so far have zilch. Grin Can't see that improving any time soon as have mothers day and two birthdays coming up.

travelmad - those are brilliant. Crochet is one craft I've never got the hang of. My DM is left handed and does it backwards so when she tried to teach me it was disastrous. I was just left with a pile of knots. Maybe I should have tried tatting instead?

VivaJen · 13/03/2017 17:39

Hi Everyone! I've never posted before (but done plenty of lurking). I adore Christmas!!!! This year I am determined to be organised. I've set up a standing order to a special Christmas Savings Account and I'm putting £5 away every week to help with food shopping in December. Just bought tickets to see the Nutcracker on Christmas Eve which is something I've always wanted to do. Felt sooo smug because I had money put aside to cover the cost.

73kittycat73 · 13/03/2017 18:25

Hi VivaJen. Smile I bet The Nutcracker will be awesome, and on Christmas Eve too! Good stuff. Smile

Travelmad they are gorgeous!! You might get some ideas from this website, 12 Crafts, where the blogger was working on various toys as Christmas gifts and made a lot of tutorials to help along the way. Although she doesn't seem to have posted much since that Christmas!! Xmas Grin (I was following her and a few others that year, as I had great hopes of wonderful crafting - then life just got progressively more hectic and I have tubs of fabric and ribbons and half-done projects just lying abandoned.....).

I want to get started on my organizing again, and plan for some crafting in the quieter time over summer, but life is just too hectic. Savings are going into everyday just now, but I have plans for building them up again soon. And we are not travelling home this year (so that's already a saving of €800 on a house and easily another €300+ on food/drink for others - although we will now have to cook our own turkey so maybe the food/drink money will be similar as we will entertain at home a little).

I booked our summer holiday yesterday - 13 nights in France, flying, but with checked cases for all 3 of us. So there will be some spare capacity for bringing things home (DD, 11, already lit up at the thoughts of "France, cheese, bringing some home..." so I hope there will be some space left once her wants are sorted!).

Our supermarket changed its loyalty scheme recently, and I can't figure it out. There are plenty of "spend €100, get €9 off" types of vouchers for a few weeks together coming out, and money off specific products (rarely ones I use!), but I don't think there are any more "free money" ones (get 1 point per €1 spend, and get vouchers back for those points quarterly if you go over 250, each 250 points equaling €2.50 cash back). I must start to use Boots more for regular toiletries as that seems a better return at this stage.

I got back to work yesterday after a naaaasty chest infection, and am taking it kinda easy for a few days yet. So in between catching up, I am doing some organizing of Cubs stuff (we have an overnight hiking/hostel trip coming up soon) and Christmas (I have my list of cards received last year, so going to start doing a proper database to do mailmerge labels for addresses and cross-ref who I send and who sends to me). Postage costs here were just increased: a letter within Ireland was 72c and will now be €1!! So I must think a little more carefully about cards in future (it's not that long ago when they were 56c! Maybe, 4/5 years only?!).

Aiming to spend no money for another few weeks...and try to find some time to see could I actually do some crafting this year.

Flashinthepan · 15/03/2017 17:13

Can I join? I know I'm late to the party, had no idea there was a thread for people like me! Hello, my name is Flash, I watch Christmas films while ironing...all year! I feel like I've found my place in the mumsnet sphere.

AdoraBell · 15/03/2017 17:41

Fab work there Travel

I bought one of those pin art things today. DD1 apparently really wants one, I hope she feels the same at the end of the year.

73kittycat73 · 15/03/2017 18:51

Hi Flashinthepan. Smile You've just put me in the mood for a Christmas film. Smile Welcome to the board.

VivaJen · 15/03/2017 19:24

Yes! Definitely a Christmas film! I'm checking my Rudolph Day task list and seriously thinking about having a glass of wine. Excellent suggestion Flash

SideOrderofSprouts · 15/03/2017 19:33

Hello!! waves welcome to a lovely festive safe haven
